BULLETIN BOARD President’s Message Barbara Diskowski, Ed.D., President

Welcome to the New Year 2017. We hope you have enjoyed time to remember and share the holiday season with friends and family. As you will see, there are many ways to become involved with some in- teresting, fun- loving, and serious-minded folk all in one place. Linda Hall has put together some of your suggestions for ac- tivities that are possible in Division 52.

I am somewhat partial to legislative activities because it is vital that we are a part of the legislative actions that affect future, currently working and retired teachers. Keeping in- volved with one’s legislators at the local level is important on a regular basis. We are fortunate to have caring and intelligent leaders in all of Area IV at the Federal level.

It is part of being an informed citizen to teach our State leg- islators about the needs and goals of CalRTA members. We represent about 250,000 retired teachers in California. Num- bers count when advocating with our representatives. Your membership is key.

Member and author, Jane Cambus, celebrates with our latest Members of the Month, Richard and Shannon Merrill (photo, seated, right).

Both have been outstanding teach- ers in the MDUSD, Richard in the Science Curriculum Area and Shan- non in observing and supporting student teachers. They have also been active in our DV-52 membership and leadership committees and Richard as our Awards Chair for three years. These special members have distinguished themselves by helping solve problems with creative skills that brought out the best in other teachers’ individual gifts. Their peers have said, “Modeling at its best”.

We need to work with like groups when considering the de- sired result of our efforts to support Social and Medicare Se- curity. This also applies to the repeal of the WEP/GPO. Please plan to attend several of our write-ins this coming spring. Ad- vocacy Day is April 26, 2017. We will have a short 10 minute write-in at our February luncheon. (Con't. from page 1) This photo of teachers, who taught in the Pittsburg School District, is an example of how we can gather to work with like groups on important issues. From left in the back row are Patty Waddington; Financial Secretary, Marc Sternberger; CalRTA member and CTA-R President, Linda LaCasse, Eric Heins; CTA President, Johanna Ely, Helen Cry- er, from left in first row are Joan Coss, Delia Hewitt, Nellie Hinds, Carolyn Beasley, Joan Falligant; Resources, and Karen Barrett. It was a lot of fun to celebrate with the group at our February lun- cheon day with such a good turnout from their District.

WPE Seeking Volunteers The nonprofit White Pony Express (WPE) urgently needs

additional volunteers to help carry out its mission of dis- tributing food and clothing in order to reduce hunger and poverty in Contra Costa County. One mission is its Food Rescue Program, where the all-volunteer WPE rescues 5,000 pounds of surplus food each day from supermarkets, restaurants, and farmers’ markets and gives it to nonprofits, who feed the hungry in our county free of charge.

WPE especially needs van drivers to pick-up and deliver food, food sorters, home dispatchers, and workers to help with sorting and distributing new or like-new clothing, toys, games and books to those in need. Many volunteer jobs are available with flexible schedules. Your selfless service will have an immediate, direct impact on those suffering.

White Pony Express facilities are located at 3380 Vincent Road, Pleasant Hill. Interested volunteers should contact Mandy Nakaya at (925) 818-6361 or email her at mandy@ whiteponyexpress.org. For more information on WPE, go to www.whiteponyexpress.org.

Legislation Barbara Diskowski, Ed.D. CalRTA Area IV Government Relations Co-Representative and Div.52 Legislative Chair The GRC state committee has worked on the CalRTA State

Legislative Platform and the Executive Board of CalRTA vot- ed to adopt this DRAFT in November. I thought that you, our members, would like to see that document. Although we do a great deal of legislative work to repeal the punitive WEP/GPO, we also focus on many other areas with the state legislature and the Federal government as well. With that in mind, I am print- ing the proposed Platform in several steps. It is what CalRTA is about for all of its present and future members.

CalRTA believes that all educators have a right to retire in dig- nity. They have a right to a secure and safe retirement, one that retains its purchasing power value, ensures access to affordable quality health care, and provides protection for their safety and well-being. To assure these benefits for future retired educators, public education and educators need to be supported and the Teachers’ Retirement Fund needs to be actuarially sound. To accomplish these goals, CalRTA will advocate for an adequate CalSTRS retirement with defined benefits, an equitable secure Social Security retirement, access to affordable quality health care, and appropriate funding for public education. Next time I will address CalSTRS retirement. For your information we had a special guest at our October General Meeting. Honorable Assemblywoman, Susan Bonilla, met with us (con't. top right)

A CalRTA Div.52 Workshop was recently held to learn about

Google Forms for registering future attendees on-line. From left, Pat Seaman, Area IV Director, Lorrie Osborn, membership, Bar- bara Diskowski, Ed.D.,President of Div.52, Linda Hall, legis. co- chair, Mary Kay Henderson, Area IV Communication Rep, Div.

and shared what she is doing currently for teachers, children, and college-age students in Sacramento. Susan was presented with CalRTA’s highest award. On January 9th Teri Gerritz and I will entertain all Area IV Di-

vision Legislative leaders, Presidents, Communication people and interested others at my home from 10:00 to 1:30 to plan for an Advocacy Day locally and in Washington DC. We will also plan our nominations for Friends of CalRTA. Lunch will be served and interesting information shared.

Looking Ahead Linda Rae Hall, Div.52, Legislative Co-Chair

In the wake of the upcoming change in the political climate in Washington DC, it is too early to know to what degree the challenge has become steeper when it comes to advocating the causes we care about in CalRTA. But, whatever challenges do materialize…we cannot give up.

In 2016 we saw a positive step forward toward Social Security Equity, as we witnessed a first- time Congressional hearing on proposed legislation to reform the Windfall Elimination Penalty. While the bill did not ad- vance to the floor of the House for a vote, it did spotlight the need to shore up Social Security first and then begin the repeal of both the WEP and GPO penalties simultaneously.

A new President and Congress will soon be sworn in, and it appears we may first be asked to help protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare. Also, to help defend Public Pensions…in order to set the stage for achieving Social Se- curity Fairness during the next Presidential administration.

Remember that whatever challenges may appear in the near future, each one of us has the power to take small steps toward a better America every day. As New York Times col- umnist, Mark Leibovich, recently wrote, “Maybe the purist act of patriotism involves well-meaning citizens redoubling their efforts at being respectful, compassionate, and decent in their everyday lives. It’s what we can control, after all, our small gift to democracy…”

Membership News Update Page4 February - M

Lorrie Osborn It’s hard to believe that it’s already 2017,

Happy New Year, Everyone! I’m pleased to report that our membership in Division 52 is strong and now totals 1,069. Did you know that some of our members are not former educators, but people who support our goals, respect teachers and their work, and enjoy our activities; such as travel,

lunches, and movies?

If you think about it, your spouse should be very interested in the protection of your pension and benefits. If something happened to you, your spouse will receive a percentage of that pension for the rest of his/her life! That was enough to con- vince my husband to join!

As I often tell members and non-members alike, the total membership of CalRTA makes a big difference in pushing for important education bills in the legislature and for protecting retirement benefits for both active and retired teachers. Your membership is a VOICE and a VOTE on behalf of the educa- tors of California. While Division 52 is holding strong, num- bers of members statewide have dropped. If we lose numbers we lose important influence in Sacramento and in Washing- ton, D.C! Tell your family and friends about CalRTA and why it is important to you! Ask them to join you in supporting the 45,000 members in fighting for pension protection and Social Security fairness.

And please, continue to invite other educators, both active and retired to get involved with our organization. There are many folks out there who SHOULD join, but haven’t done so yet. Most of our new members join because you have told them about CalRTA and its great value. Thank you for all that you do.

CalRTA Needs To Hear From You! The CalRTA Board of Directors recently adopted an ex-

panded Advocacy Platform, and now we need your help se- lecting the highest priorities. The Platform is divided into four sections with provisions under each section. In the sur- vey you’ll be asked to select three provisions in each section that you believe are the highest priorities for that section. The survey deadline is March 1, 2017. It only takes a few minutes and we really want to hear from you. We can only work on issues you care about if you tell us what those is- sues are! Here’s the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ CalRTAAdvocacySurvey.

Volunteers Needed Volunteers Are Needed at the Pre-Retirement Workshop

on March 14, 2017 from 3-6 pm at Los Medanos College, in Pittsburg. We need help with: Food, Decorations, Handouts & Greeting Guests. Our focus is on: Pittsburg, Antioch & CCCOE teachers. If you are interested, please email Lorrie Osborn at [email protected], or email to jalos- [email protected].

Food Bank Collection-Thank You! The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano thanks you,

one and all, for your donations to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano counties which totaled 60 pounds of food and $50 in cash at our December meeting. This equates to 70 meals which will brighten many faces. The Food Bank is very appreciative of your continued support to those in need in our community.

See’s Candy Sale See’s Candy certificates will be available at our February

luncheon, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The cost is $17.00 each and rep- resents about a 15% discount over the retail cost. Please have exact change if you are paying cash, but checks pay- able to CalRTA-52 would be preferable. If you won't be at the luncheon, but wish to place an order, please call Nellie Hinds. You can also write a check, include a stamped self- addressed envelope and mail it to Nellie.

We would like to express out thanks to Nellie Hinds and her assistants, Carol Beasley and Corinne Geiger, for their time and efforts in the annual event.

Greetings From the University of Rome! There’s a club at my university here in

Rome that actually facilitates the con- nection between the school and the ref- ugee center. The club is called STAND (Students Taking Action Now-Darfur). It originated in response to the geno- cide in Darfur, Sudan to educate people on the nature of genocide in the world.

It managed to connect with the Joel Nafuma Refugee Cen- ter. There, students are able to teach refugees (mostly from Africa) English and Italian, volunteer in the book center, work on maintaining the center, or simply socialize with the refugees. Thanks for helping make this all possible for me.

Scholarship Foundation News Our Scholarship Foundation provides important support to

needy students going on to higher education. Since no money is used for administrative purposes, 100% of your donation goes directly to scholarships. As always, all contributions are greatly appreciated.

Our annual appeal for donations continues to be successful as in previous years. Your donations enabled the Foundation to award six scholarships of $5,000 each for 2016. Barbara Riggins, a CalRTA Diablo Vista-52 member for many years, has funded a seventh scholarship of $5,000 from her Local Scholarship Endowment Fund for a reentry woman. Barbara passed away about two years ago, but this scholarship will continue to be given in her name. This was the foundation's First Perpetual Scholarship given by one of our members. Our 2017 recipients will be chosen in April from DVC and LMC.

Scholarship Recipient Update Just a note to let you know that this last semester was

definitely the most difficult one of my college career, but also the most rewarding! I was inducted into the Psychi Honors Society, the society for psychology students, and also made the dean’s list. With these accomplishments, and others as well, I’ve learned a lot. I also volunteered at a wonderful group home for foster youth and met many great people. I wanted to also let you know the wonderful opportunities this scholarship is helping me obtain. Thank you so much!
