Preface

Wood in its many shapes

No material has found its way into peoples lives for as long and in as many ways as wood in its many shapes. The use of wood presents the bridge between wood science, structural engineering, architecture and design. The present work is a result of the interdisciplinary collaboration and different experiences of two wood scientists from Sweden and Slovenia with different backgrounds, both in their continuous efforts to use more wood in contemporary architectural design and enhance an entirely new life style with wood.

The aim of the exhibition is to promote the use of wood in different shapes based on high-level technology and technical know-how that need creative thinking, a comprehensive vision and a philosophical view - for achieving excellence in timber design research and education.

Manja Kitek Kuzman studied architecture in Ljubljana, Lausanne and Paris. She started her career as independent architect. Now she is a Professor of architecture at the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Wood Science and Technology.

Her research and teaching interests revolve around developing wood constructions, innovative but still sustainable use of wood and product design. She published several scientific monographs about innovative modern wooden architectural design which still respects old traditions. Her work shows refined sensibility towards the connection between people and nature, design and art, the limits and chances of new approaches in architecture and design.

Manja Kitek Kuzman literally travelled the world and kept track in travel logs, sketches and photographs. With her poems she gives wood and architecture a whole new expressive voice.

Ljubljana

Dick Sandberg a wood-technology engineer, with his daily work within the field of wood material itself, sawmilling and further processing, specialising in using new measurement technology, advanced information processing and wood communication from felling to finished product.

He has a background as specialist and manager of several companies in the wood industry sphere, as teacher and researcher in both universities and institutes. However, he has during his whole research period considered it important that the research results shall be understood by people in common. The general aim is to try to facilitate the communication between wood research, the industry and the user of the wood products in order to achieve a more efficient utilization of the forest resource. Since 2015, in close cooperation with Manja Kitek Kuzman, which has opened a new way how to present wood utilization for a wider audience – this photo exhibition is one example.

His profession today is chaired Professor of Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology in northern Sweden.
