NEW IN 20 13 - 3-DAY FESTIVAL!

This year doesn’t just mark 40 years of Galveston’s world-famous Victorian

holiday festival, it also celebrates the 170th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ beloved “A Christmas Carol”. To showcase both the namesake of the festival and welcome guests for the 40th an-niversary, this year’s Dickens on The Strand will open a day earlier on Friday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m.

“The 40th anniversary of Dickens on The Strand will be an extraordi-nary event,” said Dwayne Jones, executive direc-tor of the Galveston Historical Foundation. “Over the years, Dickens has become a cherished part of many families’ holiday experience and a way to enjoy a part of our heritage of Southeast Texas. The feeling of Dickens is animated and magical, and simply fun for all. We look forward to making 2013 an exceptional experience

with Dickens characters, Queen Victoria and her royal entourage, and visitors from the Dickens’ Museum in London. You will not want to miss the celebration.”

The live version of “A Christ-mas Carol” will be performed by members from Clear Creek Community Theater. The per-formance will begin at 6 p.m. in Saengerfest Park and will feature a special welcome by Charles Dickens’ great-great-granddaugh-ter, Jane Monk. Admission to the

performance is free with paid admission to Fri-

day night’s festival. The annual

holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian Lon-don, features parades, non-stop entertain-ment on five stages, strolling carolers, rov-ing musicians, bagpipers, jug-

glers and a host of other enter-

tainers. Costumed vendors peddle their

wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden

with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, cloth-ing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items.

For information on Dickens on The Strand, Galveston His-torical Foundation, or to purchase advance tickets, visit galvestonhis-tory.org or call 409-765-7834.

Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, great-great-great-granddaughter, and Jane Monk, great-great-granddaughter, both will be returning to this year’s festival to take part in numerous special events through-out the weekend, begin-ning with Dinner with Dickens. Tickets are $80 per person, and include a complimentary pass to Friday night’s festival.

“I’m really looking forward to my return to Galveston and am thrilled to have been asked to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Dickens on The Strand,” Lucinda Dickens Hawk-sley said. “It’s going to be even better this year as it is starting a day earlier than normal, and there are some great new ideas. Galveston is such a pretty and historic place to hold a festival that it lends itself per-fectly to the very special atmosphere that makes up Dickens on The Strand.”

Held this year for one night only, Dinner with Dickens will welcome guests as they are treated to an evening of fine food, grand storytelling and royal company as the festival’s Queen Vic-toria makes her annual entrance. The dinner also will welcome Emmy winner Al Hyslop as he delivers a special reading of “A Christmas Carol” on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the holiday classic.

The menu for this year’s dinner will feature:

• Spiced Sweet Potato Bisque with Toasted Basil

• Winter Greens Salad, Dried Cranberries, Cornbread Croutons and Red Onion

• Served with Maple Balsamic Dressing

• Herb Crusted Lion of Pork served with Rosemary Jus Natural, Roast Garlic Mashed, Fresh Green Beans with Brown Butter and Bacon
