1. Why is this millage approval necessary? Currently, the district is able to levy the full 18 mills on non-homestead property authorized by law. The proposal asks voters to continue to allow the Freeland Com-munity School District to levy this amount through 2013.

2. Will this renewal result in higher property taxes? Absolutely not! There is no tax increase as a result of approval of the ballot pro-posal. The request is to provide the ability to protect what is currently in place. The 18 mills currently levied on non-homestead property (seasonal residences, second homes, or business property) are capped, by law, at that level. This ballot proposal has no effect on homeowners, who do not pay the non-homestead levy.

3. Have the voters of Freeland always supported such a renewal? Yes. The voters have understood the importance of this operating millage and have continually supported the schools in this type of request.

4. How much revenue could the district lose if the renewal millage is not approved? Using the most up to date property values available, the estimated loss to the district would be over $1,200,000.

5. How long would the millage renewal last? Authorization would be for a period of 4 (four) years (2010 through 2013). At which time, the 18 mill non-homestead millage renewal would again come before the voters.

6. Doesn’t the State of Michigan guarantee a certain minimum amount of funding per student? Yes. The State does provide a minimum foundation allowance per student, but as-sumes that the district will levy and collect the total available 18 mills for non-home-stead property. If the district is unable to levy the full millage authorized, the State will not make up the difference.

7. Will this millage proposal impact Sinking Fund or Debt Fund revenues? No. The 18 mill non-homestead millage effects only general operating funds. This bal-lot proposal will have no impact on levies or bonds previously approved and currently in place.

Seasons to Remember

Freeland Learning Center Principal Thoughts

By Bev Beyer, Freeland Learning Center Principal

Regular Kindergarten / Young 5’s Kindergarten Children who will be five years old on or before December 1, 2010, are able to attend kindergarten, but some parents are just not comfortable with sending their four year old child to kindergar-ten. You asked for it and we listened! We will be offering a Young 5’s Kindergarten program this fall! The Young 5’s program will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., with the option for free extended programming until 3:44 p.m. Enrollment in the Young 5’s kindergarten is by parent request. Thestudents will attend Young 5’s kindergarten and then advance to regular kindergarten the next year. Deciding when to start your child in school can be a difficult decision. I personally will encourage my grandson to attend regular kindergarten, though he has an October birth date. Freeland offers an outstanding full-day regular kindergarten program. Full-day kindergarten has been very successful. Our highly qualified kindergarten teachers balance “sit down” learning time with physically active engagement. As fall goes into winter, the stu dents’ stamina and attention span increases. The teachers gradually increase the students’ “sit down” learning time. We are excited to welcome a new kindergarten class to the Freeland Learning Center, and look forward to providing the Young-5’s Kindergarten to those who would not otherwise be ready to start school.

Dental Health AwarenessStudents from Delta College created a memorable learning experience for the students in the classroom of Mrs. Lopez. The Delta students taught about dental health with a fun presentation. The smiles were bright during that lesson!

A Gift From The Heart! The students from Mrs. Thill’s second grade class showed how much they care by making her a blanket to keep her comfy-cozy. The students applied their names and hand prints in white to Falcon green material they fringe tied, creating a blanket.

Introduction to BandThe Learning Center students enjoyed the medley of music and hearing the individual sounds instruments make when band instructor, Mr. Bill Shephard, brought the eighth grade band students to the Learning Center for a mini-concert. Interest in music starts when we are young! Thank you, Mr. Shephard!

March is Reading Month

The Michigan Department of Education proclaims “March is Reading Month!” During the month of March, teachers and students at Freeland Learning Center celebrated the joy of reading with a variety of special activities. Read-ins, guest teachers, guest readers, and reading buddies are a few examples of how students celebrated reading. Thank you, teachers, for your creative planning and effort during the month long celebration!

Elementary Principal Thoughts By Tim Parson, Freeland Elementary Principal

As a principal, I feel one of my primary responsibilities is looking for ways to improve instruction. When we choose instructional goals and interventions, we may see bits and pieces of improve-ment over the course of a school year, but it may take several years to see significant improvements in student achievement. Eight years ago, we made the most important decision for school improvement, as a district, in my 14 years as principal of Freeland Elementary School. We joined the North Central Accreditation and adopted their process for school improvement. Sometimes it is difficult to wait patiently for results, while trying to remain confident that the instructional approaches we choose will pay off. This year I am seeing impressive improvements over the last five or six years. Each of the past six years, our math and reading scores have improved, in some cases only slightly. However, collectively they show that our instructional changes are paying off. Our math scores are some of the best in the region. Reading scores are among the best. So what is next? Earlier in the year, I announced we had some new technology that would improve our teachers’ ability to self-evaluate their instruction, sometimes immediately, based on student performance. This ability to self-evaluate, whether it is on a local assessment the teacher creates, or a standardized assessment like MEAP or the IOWA, provides us the tools to finally use assessment results to reinforce what is working, and identify what instruction is not. It will be interesting to track our improvements over the next several years. I anticipate it will take less patience, with more immediate feedback from our data. I hope to continue to update you on what we develop as we continue to learn how to use the new technology we acquire.

Over one hundred thirty famous visitors shared their stories at Freeland Elementary School, as Freeland fourth graders presented their yearly Wax Museum project. These students learned about a famous person, and then “become them” as they presented to their peers, and to the many parents touring the Wax Museum.

Mr. Townsend and Mrs. Gotts have led a very enthusiastic group of FMS students to create a Wellness Team. The NFL awarded our school a $5,000.00 grant geared toward improving the overall fitness and nutrition levels of our students. FMS has done so many activities this year, NFL representatives visited our campus and next year’s marketing brochures will feature our building and students! Great job, team!

This engaging group came in to our school to bring the Civil War to life for FMS students. Text-books simply cannot achieve this! Mr. Schwedler deserves praise for bringing this group to our students.

These FMS students surely are wrapped up in the content of this lab. Hands-on learning always provides for a richer learning experi-ence.

FMS students were definitely not feeling the “dog days” of April, as these furry friends visited FMS! Nice job team 7 for bringing in the lovable group!

Accelerated Reader Accomplishments

The Freeland Elementary School/Freeland Learning Center PTO Sponsored “Pizza with Picasso” on January 28, 2010. This was a great family activity with student art work displayed, door prizes, a cookie decorating station, make and take art station, face painting, pizza—and much more. Students and family members look forward to this bi-annual event.

Freeland Middle School Principal Thoughts

By Chris Arrington, Freeland Middle School Principal

In this edition of the Openline, I would like to draw attention to a couple of news items that are points of pride for our building. In case you missed it, FMS made the front page of the Midland Daily News on March 30, 2010. Mr. Schwedler’s US History classes enjoyed Civil War presentations provided by a crew led by Mr. Mike Goyette, from Gagetown, Michigan. This living history reenactment certainly grabbed our students’ attention.

Likewise, our seventh grade team of teachers provided yet another awesome capstone experience for the latest thematic unit, “The Amazing Race.” Not only did Mr. Brian Pruitt come in to speak with our students, but a complete Iditarod team of dogs visited our campus on April 6, 2010. Again, the Midland Daily News featured our building for offering such an engaging learning activity.

A staple of FMS each year is our Career Fair. This year’s event was superbly organized by Mrs. Gotts and her crew of student leaders. Local business leaders were invited into our building and shared their real-world experiences with our students. Now, more than ever before, it is very important to begin educating our youth about career pathways and choices. Our goal is to develop students who are empowered to be successful in the global workforce.

These are a mere few of the outstanding, real-life learning experiences our staff has provided for the students of FMS. I am proud our learning community goes above and beyond the call of duty to provide this level of education for our kids!

“Where in the World is Freddy Falcon?”By: Jamie Bain

Where is Freddy Falcon? The 7th graders will be on the hunt for our missing mascot. Last seen, he was boarding an American Airline flight, heading to the Eastern Hemisphere. With passport in hand and an eagerness to learn, Freddy set off on his journey. Thanks to American Airline pilots Captain Jim McNamara and Captain Larry McCallester, Freddy flew all over the Eastern Hemisphere reporting on his activities to help the 7th grade Social Studies class. His goal as he stated, “If the students can’t get to the Eastern Hemisphere, then I’ll bring the Eastern Hemisphere to them!” Recently, Mrs. Bain received a care package from Freddy and Captain McNamara highlighting key destinations as he traveled. Using the items from the care package, the 7th graders will use the clues to find out where Freddy Falcon has been, and his current whereabouts.

Each marking period, the 7th grade focuses on a cross-curricular unit. The fourth marking period unit, the Mystery Unit, will encourage students to explore the curriculum while solving the mystery of Freddy Falcon’s travels. By creating a real-world experience (traveling around the Eastern Hemi-sphere), the students are more apt to connect with, and better understand the content.

These students learned about a famous person, and then “become them” as they presented to their peers, and to the many parents touring the Wax Museum.

Shephard!

2009 Freeland MEAP ResultsWhen the 2009 MEAP results were released this spring, once again, Freeland students did very well on the state assessment, and compared very favorably to other districts in the area, and across the state. The chart below shows the percent of Freeland’s 3rd - 9th grade students who met or exceeded the state standards. Though it is just one measure of the work we do as a school district, we are proud of the success of our students. We are continually working towards increasing student achievement and helping our students grow as learners. We are making certain that our students are participating in an enriching and challenging curriculum, as we strive to become the highest achieving school district in the Great Lakes Bay Region, and prepare our students for their future. The MEAP test is just one indication of how we are doing towards those ends. We think we are on the right track.

District Mission StatementThe purpose of the Freeland Community School District is preparing students to

be successful adults through excellence in education.

What is new at Freeland?

• Construction of a four (4) classroom addition to the Freeland Learning Center, paid for through our Sinking Fund, will begin in May.

• Addition of a Young 5’s Kindergarten Program for those students five (5) years old prior to Dec. 1, 2010, who are not ready to begin full-day kindergarten.

• Before school programming for K-6th grade students at Freeland Elementary School, beginning in the fall of 2010.

• Advanced and Accelerated enrichment activities will be implemented throughout K - 6th grade in 2010-11.

• Use of Compass Learning will be expanded as an extension for student learning.

meeting the needs of those students who are struggling in our K-6 grades.• Opportunities for leveled math courses in the 5th and 6th grades at

Freeland Elementary.• An on-line middle school Spanish elective for 8th graders.• New Honors Biology and Honors Physics courses at Freeland High School.• A redesigned Advanced Physics course to better challenge our students.

• Freeland High School will host a Regional Hearing Impaired Program

• Delta College will be offering courses to our students at Freeland High School

What is not new at Freeland?

• Freeland will continue to not accept schools of choice students• Freeland will continue to strive to be the most customer-oriented

and highest achieving school district in the Great Lakes Bay Region, as we prepare our students to be successful adults.

Did You Know? There are a lot of changes occurring in the Freeland Community School District as we begin preparing for the 2010-2011 school year. Please take a look at some of the new opportunities being offered by your school district next year. We hope you will be pleased with what we are attempting to provide for our students and our community.

Remember to Vote!On August 3, 2010, the Freeland Community School District will be asking our community to renew our 18 mill operating millage. This operating millage provides almost 10% of your school’s revenue, and is essential for the operation of the district. There is more information on this proposal provided on the back page of the Open Line. Please take a look at this information, and contact Superintendent Matt Cairy (989.695.5527 or [email protected]) if you have any questions.

15 Homecoming vs. Ovid-Elsie
