Aanvanklik is groot verbasing uitgespreek oor mnr. “Terug na my wortels,” sê hy.

Buiten politiek, is hy tans steeds by projekte in die o n d e r w y s betrokke. Hy is by twee instansies bedry wig, waar hy konsultasiewerk doen en primêr by bestuursontwikkeling betrokke is.

Reinhardt het by mnr.

gehoor klavier speel. Mnr.

“Anyone can make war but only the most courageous can make peace,” Donald

Trump told reporters when questioned why he praised the North Korean dictator as “very smart” and “tough”, despite his human rights record. The world is experiencing mixed feelings towards this historic summit. Some say that it was merely a façade; the documents that they signed were too vague to lead to any form of North Korean denuclearisation, and that the United States are getting the shorter end. Others firmly believe that this is the definitive first step towards nuclear

peace between President Trump and Kim Jung Un. In hindsight, the summit’s meaning contains a balance between both the former and the latter. So, what exactly did each country want from the other? The United States quite simply wants complete denuclearisation of North Korea – that means that North Korea should change the ready status of their 60 nuclear missiles to obsolete. North Korea wants The United States to withdraw all their troops from the Korean peninsula and end their alliance with South Korea. Another motive for Kim Jong Un to work toward general peace with President Trump is to alleviate sanctions imposed on his country. Those were the two viewpoints before

the meeting, but as we all know: every deal has a compromise. The actual agreement signed consisted of very vague conclusions and pliable goals. They merely promised to “work towards” denuclearisation, with no specific expectations of North Korea, nor any deadlines. The only tangible agreement was that President Trump agreed to freeze USSouth Korean military exercises as long as North Korea continues to freeze its development of nuclear weapons. This seems more like a win for Kim Jong Un, seeing as he already has the nuclear power to wage worldwide war. On the other hand, Trump’s side of the deal might complicate economic

relations between the United States and South Korea.Trump wants to end the ‘war games’ as both Kim Jong Un and Trump describe the jointed military exercise between the United States and South Korea in the Korean Peninsula: this will save the United States billions of dollars.Trump’s gain out of the deal might be that it serves as proof that he is the ultimate dealmakerturnedpresident. The gain for the United States – and one might argue therefore for the world – might mean a peculiar form of peace, now with trade relations with North Korea for the first time since the Korean War.

Trump has overcome decades of hostility and tension by meeting with the “little rocket man” as he called the dictator as recently as last year. But how does the Chinese President Xi Jinping view the new friendship?During a state visit to China on 8 May 2018, Kim Jong Un allegedly told reporters, “As long as relevant parties eliminate the hostile policy and security threats against North Korea, North Korea does not need to have nuclear weapons, and denuclearisation is achievable.”If President Xi Jinping’s main concern is the security of the Chinese people, and thereby the denuclearisation of North Korea, President Kim Jong Un’s quote shall lay his fears to rest. But only time will tell.

In what was regarded as a diplomatic gesture in advance of the upcoming meeting between Trump

and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the North Korean government recently transferred three Americans from the brutal labour camps (being described as “terrible as Nazi Camps”) to a hotel near Pyongyang. Then, late on Tuesday night (8 May), after negotiating with President Trump, Kim Jong Un released the three hostages and handed them over to US custody.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accompanied the three men back to the United States, where they were welcomed by President Trump at 3am at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. As with any news with Trump, there are always mixed opinions. Many news outlets claimed that the manner in which Trump handled the situation was staged, and only meant to garner TV ratings. In whichever light you view the welcoming, one fact cannot be disputed: this was quite an accomplishment for the abundantly scrutinized leader. The diplomatic success was also a promising

premonition of what lay ahead for the summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore. Rumours are spreading that the recent defection of two NorthKorean civilians to South Korea, together with America’s joint military exercises with South Korea might lead to the cancellation of the summit of 12 June between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. However, according to Dr James Kim at the ASAN Institute, there was “nothing to suggest” that the defection would derail the talks between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jongun.Political expression and freedom of speech is an essential component to any functioning democracy. One is entitled to disagree with the views of another, but we must also be able to use our discretion and know when something is no longer political but simply an achievement to be celebrated.Trump’s victory in freeing the refugees has made us all ponder what the future will hold for North Korea’s relationship with the rest of the world. It could have been the first signs of Kim Jong Un slackening his vice grip over his people, and one day, the chains might be no more.

Paul Roos ‘n Goudmyn van talent

Tian Louw

A friend asked me what my plans were for the July holiday. I replied,

“We’re off to the World Choir Games in Tshwane!” This was followed by a laugh and then a silence when he realised I was not joking. The World Choir Games is real and it is right here in South Africa! The Paul Roos Gymnasium Choir will indeed be attending this prestigious international choir competition from 1015 July.A unit of 60 Paul Roosers will be participating in this monumental choral clash by representing The Mighty Maroon in a battle against choirs from a

myriad of different countries. The choir will be singing under the leadership of Mr. Stephan Bezuidenhout (conductor), Mr. Cezarre Strijdom (accompanist/pianist) and Ms. Wikje du Preez (manager). The Paul Roos choir is known as “unique” and “experimental”.This is thanks to Mr. Bezuidenhout who took the choir under his wings in 2014. In the last five years the repertoire of the choir has always been something strange but pleasing that consistently manages to capture the audience’s attention. This year is no exception. The music that the choir will be performing includes: “Bound for Jubilee” – A passionate song fuelled by faith in the glory of

God. “Do not stand at my grave and weep” – a musical rendition of a poem by the same name that captures the heart and confronts the issue of the loss of a loved one. An energetic African medley which (sorry for the spoiler) includes an impressive traditional gumboot dance! And finally, “Balbesit” – yes, a song about rugby! It is rough, intense, loud and weird and it will definitely draw a lot of attention (much like most rugby players).Something else, other than the exceptional talents of the choir’s leaders, that makes the Paul Roos choir unique is its “big show” at the beginning of a year. Last year the Epic Fail Musical was held and it was indeed an

immensely successful failure. This year the choir sang with Matthew Mole and the Bloemhof choir, creating an unforgettable event. However, after this, the time for fun and games were over (technically). The choir is well aware that what lies ahead is huge. So the mere two hours of practice they have per week now involves more nailbiting, yelling, singing and chairthrowing than ever.Every choirboy’s voice is shaking and burning. Every teacher involved is serious and stressed. They know what lies ahead. Before finally performing at the 10th World Choir Games, the choir (after PRG beKoor!) will have another three big perfor

mances to serve as practiceruns for the big event: Stellenbosch High’s Awesome Foursome, the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod and the regional round of the ATKV Applous choir competition. What is Paul Roos’ main goal for the World Choir Games? “Meet some girls from Italy”. Of course this is a priority, but more than that: “To sing our hearts out in the maroon blazer and to do our best to give some of the best boys’ choirs in the world a run for their money”.Can you hear the people sing? The humming in the halls. The frantic heartbeat of a brother. A crescendo of choral music emerging from a distance. The World Choir Games are here.

sionale finaal in Pretoria.Verder het twee junior en 4 se

nior spanne dié kwartaal die

skool by die eerste r o n d e van die A T K V d e b a t

k o m p e tisie in

Wellington verteenwoordig.

Marijke Roos gesing: Storm Comin’ deur The Wailin’ Jennys, Bring me little water Sylvie, Pueri Concinite en Salmo 150.

Hulle het Bound for Jubilee, Balbesit, Do not stand at my grave and weep en Vela!

Mei met Paul Roos as gas-heerskool plaasgevind. Tradisoneel neem vier kore deel aan dié luisterryke ge-leentheid, naamlik Hoër-skool Stellenbosch, Bloem-hof, Rhe nish en Paul Roos. Old Boy, bekwame sanger en musiekstudent Aiden Lewis, was saam met me.

Kringe in ’n Bos kleur gekry danksy Pieter Bruwer se opwindende voorlesing.

Considering the multitude of characters, motivations, storylines and settings that

had to be juggled in this film, directors Anthony and John Russo have done a great job in making “The Avengers: Infinity War”. It is a film of enormous scope and ambition, and yet the simplest film of all. The plot follows all of Marvel’s famous superheroes as they valiantly battle Thanos (played by a heavily CGIinfluenced Josh Brolin), and his eerily malevolent lieutenants. Thanos is a seemingly invincible and unrelentingly determined purple monster, who seeks the six “Infinity Stones” of mind, soul, space, power, time and reality. They will enable him to restore balance to the world, as he puts it, as he would be able to blur the lines of reality with a snap of his fingers. The superheroes include Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Dr Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) among many others. The plot is logically structured, although complex, and jumps from setting to setting with such fluidity that the audience is completely free from bewilderment. It cleverly and steadily builds up to a climax and conclusion that will leave many astounded. The directors and actors know that they are treading on thin ice because of how specifically and historically constructed the characters and their motives are. Any wrong move, and the film would have been blamed for being incomprehensible. They avoid

any such consequences by playing it safe and by letting the plot progress scene by scene by scene, and by letting the superheroes react to Thanos and not the other way around; the focus is shifted from the heroes to their problems. This is indeed a film about Thanos, not the Avengers. No acting plaudits are therefore deserved, because no acting skills are required. The actors must however be forgiven, for their sole objective was to exhibit their characters as they did in the previous Marvel films, and not to make any mistakes.

Film editing of high quality also plays a crucial role in keeping the story together. Scenes are swiftly and logically connected, and one is able to both understand and be enthralled by the many battle scenes. Narrative structure aside, a steadfast formula of technical filmmaking,

that Marvel had also implemented in the previous eighteen films, is once again used. By now Marvel’s visual effects, cinematography and production design collective is so used to creating fantastical civilisations, usually in space, that I imagine the numerous colourful and futuristic settings of “Infinity War” were easily come by. The soundediting and soundeffects teams ensure that the bombastic quality that has become the generally accepted norm for superhero films is attained. Where, oh where did “Infinity War” lose two of its possible five stars

then?“It is a film of enormous scope and ambition, and yet the simplest film of all.” Why enormous? Why not vast, great or magnificent? Because this is a film of great quantity but mediocre quality. The directors put themselves in a cage, because every

single thing in the whole universe is used to advance the plot. Everything from time to reality to every philosophical ideal you can think of. The artists behind the film have to distance themselves from their subject matter to protect themselves. From their own lack of talent, or from the fans who have to be enthralled? Yes, the film is ambitious, but the ambition is simple: Connect everything Marvel has created and create a blockbuster. As explained in this review, this has been done well, but that doesn’t give the film any right to

be acclaimed a great film. As fluently as the scenes connect to one another, so miserably do their different tones complement one another. Once a dark and “heartwrenching” moment is done with, an Avenger arrives to an uplifting soundtrack, and all is well. The cli

chéd and awkward comedic moments that are the norm in most boxoffice hits these days, are everpresent (for example Thor who constantly mistakes Rocket, one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, for a rabbit). The two stars are therefore claimed by all the challenging aspects of the film gone bad, while the three stars go to the unimaginatively pleasing characteristics of the film that were attained. “From their own lack of talent, or from the fans who have to be enthralled?” Both are true. If fans are enthralled, who cares about the filmmakers’ and actors’ talent? It is indeed a film solely made for the fans, but why was it truly made then? In 2019 a sequel to “The Avengers: Infinity War” will be released. Who knows where Marvel will take us next? Perhaps some imagination still lurks in their midst. Perhaps sometime in the next decade the Avengers will be replaced by “the Destroyers”, featuring “Chief Africa”, a member of the longlost and unusually peaceful Uthulu tribe, “Lord Thunder”, the longlost cousin of Thor, “Yi Ho Ming”, a young technogenius, and “Jake Lancaster”, a suave gentleman who is constantly irritated by Lord Thunder’s gruffness, among others. Also joining them will be “Female”, an inspiring and confident woman who always has to explain how her father, Iron Man, actually named her after him. They will have to battle “Element”, an overpowering alien of unknown origin who has come to earth to claim the four pebbles of earth, water, fire and air.

sosiale lewe skade aandoen.

is byna vyf keer erger by kinders. Dalk oordryf mense. Dalk soek mense net probleme waar daar nie is. Dalk...

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second oldest town and definitely one of its most pictur

esque. Other than it being home to Stellenbosch University, the oldest wine route in the country, amazing secondary schools and so much more, Eikestad is known for its myriad of quaint restaurants, boutiques, cafés and art galleries. If you rank these restaurants in order of quality, De Volkskombuis could arguably be placed around the top of that list. The name may not be too familiar since the building, a beautiful old labourers’ cottage, had been standing vacant for an extended period before it was restored and leased as a restaurant by the Rupert family in 2016. The restaurant has a great many ties with Paul Roos Gymnasium.Firstly, the owner is Old Boy Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede wine estate, who kindly sponsored a meal for five members of the Semper editorial team. Secondly, it is located right across from Paul Roos’s Volkskombuis sports field at Markötter (1876 Old

Strand Rd, Stellenbosch Central). And in the third place – the menu bears an item named after the school: Paul Roos Pizza, topped with biltong, feta and mushrooms and a absolute delight to the taste buds! The restaurant itself is decorated in both traditional and modern style, thereby offering a unique atmosphere to experience. The interior lighting is superb and the garden is extraordinarily well taken care of and very welcoming to visitors. The site’s pleasantly wellmaintained restrooms and overall neatness also can’t be left unpraised. The menu (very reasonably priced) displays classic South African fare with a variety of different foods, starters, desserts and beverages. Whether you are a vegetarian, a pizzalover or meatloving man, your needs will be satisfied. There is also a great selection of traditional boerekos which would make many feel at home and give visitors to South Africa an excellent idea of what good South African food tastes like. “Maraai se Hoenderpaai” is a simple chicken pie with mash and gravy that brings to mind something along

the lines of “Dit proe soos nog”. Some other scrumptious meals include a delicious, sweet pork belly along with homemade sauerkraut and roasted sweet potato, as well as a variety of steaks that would cater to the needs of all steaklovers, such as a soft 350g beef ribeye which simply cannot be left unexplored. The oxtail is particularly delicious – meltinthemouth quality that has to be tried, and the lamb’s rack, served medium to rare (as recommended by the chef) is superb.Add to all of this the list of sweet afterfare – from milk tart to a most delectable chocolate brownie – and you have a mealtime experience second to none: perfect for Father’s Day (although it’s a little late for that now!)The list goes on; so I urge you to explore it first hand.I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to De Volkskombuis and was very impressed with the friendly and gracious service and kind demeanour of the people that work there. The service ambassadors are particularly welltrained and impressed us with their professional presence without ever

being intrusive.De Volkskombuis is an excellent place for food lovers, small gettogethers and larger celebrations, business functions or a simply an excellent familyandfriends outing. All and all: upon visiting De Volks kombuis, you will experience a comfortable, homely atmosphere in which you will be able to enjoy fine wine, exceptional food, pleasant conversation and friendly and effective service – and from which you will leave only unwillingly! With a rating of 4,7/5, De Volkskombuis is undoubtedly one of Stellenbosch’s finest places to visit.

How many of us are familiar with the word familicide? The Van Breda axe murders that shook

Stellenbosch two years ago brought the subject to the fore.Parricide refers to matricide and patricide, the killing of a mother and father. When an entire family is murdered it is called familicide, as was attempted in the Van Breda murders. Where does one even begin to understand where the lifegiving bond between a mother and father and their child turns into lives being taken? It turns everything that a civil society needs as basis for future loving relationships on its head. As a sign of respect for the family members who can no longer speak for themselves, I will not deal with the murders directly (this has been very aptly and continuously done by the media), but will rather attempt to investigate the profile of a person who commits familicide. Why do children kill their parents? Dr Kathleen Heide Professor in Criminology at the University of South Florida in

Tampa has written several books on the subject. According to Professor Heide, the following three distinct categories of parricide offenders exist namely the severley abused child, the antisocial child and severely mentally ill children.According to Dr Heide severely abused children kill an abusive parent to stop the abuse. They might have sought help, but the abuse has continued and no other way out is seen but murder. Antisocial children kill their parents to further their own goals. It might be to inherit money, to have more freedom or to continue dating a person to whom the parents object. In other words to remove an obstacle. Severely mentally ill children kill a parent because they are mentally ill. Or might have been on medication but stopped taking it and suffered from delusions and hallucinations. How do we stop or prevent parricide from happening in the first place? Take all threats – even those made jokingly – or disturbing communication as a call for intervention. Anyone who threatens murder is sending out danger signals that cannot be ignored.

Tristan Moses and Dexter LabuschagnePaul Roos is always a force to be reckoned with in terms of schoolboy rugby, and this year the school’s first team has managed to secure emphatic victories against archrivals Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gymnasium. For the first time in three years the first rugby team has beaten the blueblazered boys from Paarl. The change in the style of play and, essentially, the outcome of the matches, can be accredited to the leadership, dedication and hard work of Mr Marinus Pretorius, assisted by the newlyappointed head of rugby, Mr Ryno Combrinck, who together have brought about a change in the culture of the game. This season will inevitably go down in Paul Roos history books as one of the best in recent years. Each performance has so far consistently exceeded the previous weekend’s. The Mighty Maroon Machine has made claim to South Africa’s top schoolboy rugby ranking, closely followed by Grey College. The highlyanticipated meeting between the two schools in Bloemfontein on 18 August is shaping up to be the season decider. The team’s success has inevitably attracted the attention of many spectators and the school has therefore become the subject of scrutiny and criticism because there are no boys of colour in this year’s first team. But people tend to leave the word “merit” out of the equation when it comes to these mostly emotional reactions. And has everybody forgotten how our well our boys from past teams are doing, even until today – boys like Damian Willemse, Craig Barry, Michal Haznar – to be mentioned in the same breath as Willie le

Roux and Steven Kitshoff?Ever since the end of Apartheid 24 years ago, people of colour have been facing difficulties in establishing themselves in some of the country’s top sporting teams. One does wonder why it is taking so long under the notsonew regime. It is true that under apartheid nonwhite people were prohibited from competing at the highest level. While one can only speculate if this was nothing but institutionalised racism, the scars from the apartheid era still run deep.Despite the best efforts of many companies, groups and institutions, all South Africans do not have the opportunity to achieve sporting excellence in among others rugby, hockey and cricket – sports that require a level of facility mostly unavailable to people who live in the grip of poverty.A vast majority of South African citizens are of colour. And it is true that South Africans of colour remain the minority in certain starting lineups more than two decades after the end of whiteminority rule – but thankfully this does not apply to all sports. The above situation does, however, once more beg the question as to why, twenty years down the line, not much has been done with regards to properly addressing the problem.Although sports teams in South Africa are not always a true reflection of the population in terms of race, and although quotas seem the only way that people of colour will be given a meaningful opportunity to become successful and represent their country, a historically huge step forward has been made by the appointment of the first Springbok captain of colour, Siya Kolisi. It has been lauded and accepted as a

popular and logical choice, and Kolisi has already, at 27 years old, established himself as a qualified leader.Without the quota system, it may be believed that especially poor people of colour cannot be given a second thought as they do not necessarily come from the traditional background of being spotted at a public school where the levels of coaching and facilities are better. For someone to achieve sporting excellence, talent must be spotted, harnessed and nurtured. In the past, such mechanisms were designed to find only white players. So: before the transformation policy, white players were the ones who had an unfair advantage. It can therefore be argued that, here in South Africa, sport has never been about merit.Quotas are a vital means through which to reverse the apartheid policies of racial division and systemic disadvantage. One doesn’t just wake up playing sport at a professional level. Talent needs to be identified and nurtured, and mechanisms should be in place to find aptitude at a grassroots level, and to ensure that this is developed. In many schools, as in PRG, these mechanisms are in place. The proposed plan to ensure that all races are represented in the national team is a highlydebatable topic that still raises many eyebrows. But thanks to these policies, it has taken South African cricket more than 20 years to produce a Temba Bavuma, who earlier this year became the first black cricketer to achieve a century for South Africa in Test cricket. Would Temba Bavuma been handed an opportunity without the quota system? Who knows – but Temba remains a shining example of its ability to inspire others.

The Heart of Paul Roos. Most of us are aware of the old cliché say

ing: “' It’s not about the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of fight in the

dog”'. In contrast with this, I believe we as Paul Roosers can relate. It is not about the victories, the fame nor the success of the school, it is about the heart of a school – what lies within. Paul Roos has a huge diversity and flourishes on the sport fields, in the auditorium and in the classroom, accommodating all learners irrespective of abilities, talents or backgrounds.Paul Roos again stepped up to the plate in making it another term for the history books. However, Paul Roos is not just about what we write up in those books. It is about what happens when no camera is looking, what happens in the change rooms before a derby and what happens on the grounds when the music starts playing. It is about the

memories we make, irrespective of our achievements. So much has happened in as few as 11 weeks. It started out with our Winter’s Day encounter against SACS and some would say it ended with our last victory over Oakdale. However, I disagree with this statement.

Paul Roos is not just an

ordinary school with astonishing achievements, but rather an astonishing school with great achievements. We have realised that each of us can make a difference in our book of results, but together we can make a change in the hearts of each other. As a brotherhood we have lost games, we have failed attempts but we certainly have not lost dignity.I would much rather lose in a maroon jersey than win in any other, because as a unit we can do more.Red

One would assume that there is not a lot anyone can learn from Kylie

Jenner about stock prices and movements, but there is little doubt that with 24,5 million followers the Instagram queen can destroy shareholding value. One Wednesday morning Kylie took to social media and tweet-ed “Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me … ugh this is so sad”. The Snapchat stock value dropped by more than 1,5 billion dollars, which is insane; howev-er, it once again highlights the power given to celebrities and how their opinions can shape market value even if they know little to nothing about investing and the value of a company.

One particular method of “trick-ing” the market is through the cyber universe. Just look at these examples of social media impact on investment markets:•Carl Icahn of Icahn Capi-tal announced over Twitter that Apple shares are under-valued. Within minutes the Apple stock gained 17 bil-lion dollars in market capital.• In 2016 there was a train collision in Maryland. The locals started tweeting about the train collision and within 90 minutes the stock of CSX Corp (the leading supplier of rail-based freight transportation in North America) plummeted by 500 million dollars, showing how public sentiment influenc-es the stock market and the pace with which these opinions can be shared. Individuals all over the

world can join in on the conver-sation lending a few tweeters the ability to make or break a stock.•In April 2016 the Syrian Elec-tronic Army announced on twitter that there had been two explosions in the White House and that President Obama was injured. The Industrial Aver-age Stock index lost 136 bil-lion dollars within minutes. All the above tweets may not have been intended to manipu-late markets, but the big risk to all investors is that it could happen. We have to accept that “news” on social media will have an immediate and direct impact on market movements and in-vestment markets. And that the manipulation of stocks through social media is something that, however inaccurate and fool-ish, needs to be taken into ac-

count as many individuals buy on impulsive following trends and fads without checking facts.Management of your invest-ments has become in entire-ly new ball game compared to the simplicity of stock market in previous years. The ability of fake news to in-fluence and shrink stock value is of huge concern to inves-tors, which is why people pay millions of dollars for social media icons like Kylie Jen-ner to endorse their products. Twitter specifically has a strong stock market presence with al-gorithms being written so AI can interpret tweets and then make a prediction about how stock markets will react. The algorithms take into account retweets containing word-ing that carries negative as

well as positive sentiment. Although this technology is highly complex, in the near fu-ture it may very well change how we interact with the stock market and the choices we make when buying or selling stock. So to all Paul Roos investors (ex-cept those that bought the very valuable Paul Roos 150 gold coin), be careful what you read on social media. As the lawyer said to Pip in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations: “Take nothing on its looks, take everything on ev-idence. There is no better rule.”

A while ago Alexandra from Rhenish came to Paul Roos to exercise her right to free speech. She read us a poem titled Cat Call. And while speculation and own agenda was thrown around quite carelessly, we never had the opportunity to hear Alexandra’s side of the story. This is why I went to interview her for this article. What I heard from Alexandra was not what I was expecting. We have become so accustomed to mobs of women listing the many mistakes our predecessors have made, and to our socalled sexist nature and patriarchy being blamed for every inconvenience, that it is no wonder that many of our fellow students felt attacked by the poem, labelling it as just another criticism toward men. The general backlash came from

a disassociation, the driving force of which was the lunacy of some socalled modern feminists who state men are the scum of the earth and responsible for every evil ever created.Alexandra has clearly stated she is not one of these individuals and after speaking with her I cannot agree more. As the interview continued I realised that I was speaking to an intelligent girl who treated me not as the enemy but as an ally. This made me reevaluate the situation as well as the poem. Alexandra stated that she not only visited Paul Roos, but her school as well and her goal was never to insult or attack men, but rather the act of catcalling. Alexandra went on to explain she preached to the masses not because all of us are incapable of understanding how disrespectful and distasteful catcalling is, but rather to make us aware and

motivate us to hold each other accountable. She furthermore went on to say that catcalling and sexual objectification was not isolated to women, but that men also often do get objectified. She believes both genders are guilty and that the issue isn’t men catcalling women. It is that catcalling is even a thing. The mob mentality that often goes along with catcalling is that individuals doing it might feel safe, but the singular girl might not. It is not that you shouldn’t flirt with a beautiful girl. Catcalling is an act where two individuals most probably will never see one another again. It is cowardly, if nothing else.If you want to compliment a woman, do it to her face, plain and simple. Consider the difference in the upbringing of the two genders. While the intent of your catcall

is either a joke or a true compliment, the reality is, in these times of abundant rape cases, that a woman has the right to not like it or even to be scared by it, considering that a man could easily overpower a single girl. Men often don’t even consider this and we don’t live with that fear. I do disagree on certain points. Although it is necessary to educate and inform everyone that catcalling is not a joke or even a compliment, I believe the use of a poem, which can so easily be misinterpreted, rather ineffective. The very fact that such a widespread misunderstanding went around is because men are sick and tired of being blamed for everything. We deal with a society according to which if you open the door for a woman you can be a misogynist and if you don’t, you’re not

a gentleman. There seems to be a picking at problems that just don’t exist which hurts the validity of matters like this that do. Because no man wants to hear another talk about how bad we are, but if given context and it is explained to us we are a welcoming and receptive audience. Men are fairly simple creatures. My conclusion is that Alexandra had the purist of intent and I agree with her about the fact that this sort of act, committed by either gender, should stop if not merely for the fact that it is distasteful. This article should not be interpreted as an endorsement for feminism, as the article has been written neither for or against it. It should stand to show us that we should not be so quick to dismiss a possible resource and that we should always try and see the bigger picture.

With the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup fast ap

proaching, international teams have selected their squads and have begun preparing for the biggest footballing contest on the planet. Fans have bought their tickets and booked their places of accommodation. The FIFA World Cup is the biggest tournament to have graced the world, reaching almost half the world’s population at 46,6%

in 2010, right here, in our very own South Africa. This year will be no different as the Russians take on the task of hosting and bringing the rest of the world into their homes. This year’s big encounter will be missing big footballing nations like Italy and the USA, who have not been doing enough to book their spots in the prestigious tournament. The favourites for the tournament are the current holders of the golden trophy, Germany, with Brazil, France and an unex

pected Belgium all big contenders for the title. African teams at the tournament will also be looking to make history. Egypt will be the one team everyone will be looking out for with their talisman Mo Salah on top form ahead of the major tournament. The Super Eagles (Nigeria) will also be another team to look out for as the powerhouse holds numerous big names playing in topflight European leagues, such as Chelsea FC midfielder, Victor Moses, Leicester City forward,

Kelechi Iheanacho and Arsenal FC forward Alex Iwobi. Other African teams include Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia. The FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly the world’s most exciting tournament. Many sides have scores to settle and are ready to prove to the world why they are the best. Many nations have young and vibrant players that will certainly want to prove their worth. Many big names such as Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo and Hazard will want to finish their careers

knowing they have the greatest of football titles in the bag. We will also be bidding farewell to greats such as Iniesta who will be taking part in his last world cup.The awaited kickoff of the big tournament was on the 14th of June and saw the hosts, Russia, take on newcomers Saudi Arabia and from there on, we will enjoy nothing but beautiful football while waiting to see who the eventual winners of the FIFA World Cup 2018 will be.

Leerlingraadskolom

Old boys Committee Corner | Komitee Hoekie

PRG Productions has been a committee with great plans for showcasing what

happens on the school grounds. Initially, it would simply be a platform for learners to keep up with the activities taking place within the school. But with Paul Roos Gymnasium, being wat it is, one should have known it would be difficult to contain that little idea.Paul Roos has gone big once again. In partnership with DigiTV, it has become the first school to set up their own online television channel, and as always, it has been done in style.

PRG TV is a platform for all the learners and teachers to show the world who we are and what we do. It is more than just for the learners and teachers. It’s for the families who have an interest in the school and would like to know what exactly happens at Paul Roos.PRG TV is run like a normal television channel, with each learner who is a part of this wonderful initiative having their own role. The roles vary, from director, cameraman, assistant, presenter, producer and plenty more. We already have two of our very own directors who have directed and presented the first episodes

of their very own shows (sign up on DigiTV, Paul Roos, to witness the greatness). Paul Roos is creating more avenues in which individuals in the school can explore their talents and express everything that is in their hearts. At this point, Mr Neville Rothman, Phillip Redelinghuys, Tauriq Henry and JD West are the people who have access to everything that happens within PRG TV.If you have not seen some of the content, sign up on DigiTV, Paul Roos, and watch all the action and if you’ve already signed up, simply log in, check out the latest content and become part of history.

Ongelukkig het me.

By dié ongelooflike byeenkoms

Springbokke

“I am a lady. I always have been a lady. I was born like I was born and who are you going to blame? God? Your parents? It’s nobody’s fault. I just want to run, but now I don’t have any rights. I have no rights in athletics”, het sy destyds opgemerk.

Paul Roos’ first team tennis continued their stellar form this season by being

crowned champions of the annual Kearsney Tennis Tournament. This tournament, hosted by Kearsney College, is one of the most prestigious on the tennis calendar and the cream of the crop of SA schools compete for the renowned title.Paul Roos, led by captain Jean Durand, ventured up to Kearsney, determined to add yet another feather to their cap.PRG opened their account by thwarting Selborne College by 90, sending a clear message to their opponents.A 54 victory versus a very determined and welloiled Affies team followed, as Paul Roos showed class and character to pull it through in the end.The maroon men made light work of Clifton High School as they once again steamrollered to a 90 victory ensuring their place in the playoffs.

PRG continued their flawless performance by dispatching with Pretoria Boys’ High 60 in their semifinal clash as they entered the final beaming with confidence.PRG once again faced off against archrivals Grey College as they did in the final of the Gerrie Berner tournament.Historically, this is always the penultimate schoolboy tennis clash as these teams more often than not battle out for the no.1 spot.PRG were absolutely ruthless as they defeated Grey College 60 to claim their second major scalp of the season. By doing so, they confirmed their status as undisputed leaders in the ranking. It has been one of the best seasons the first team has had in years. The future of PRG tennis looks extremely bright as the winning outfit only has one matric in it.Credit must be given to Mr. Jacobus Swanepoel (better known as Swannie) for all his hard work and dedication that

he puts in season after season. And a hearty well done to our first team for not only beating their opponents, but also blowing their opponents straight offcourt.Onwards and upwards!

Kings of KearsneyHow to blow your opponents straight off-court

Tristan MosesIt is, at this stage, quite safe to say that football at Paul Roos has become increasingly popular after the school’s first XI managed to secure convincing victories against archrival Grey College for two consecutive years. These victories, among others, have provided a solid foundation to build upon in order to achieve future success.Six Paul Roos boys have already been reaping the benefits of this solid foundation and have acquired admirable success after being selected to represent themselves, their school and their country in an international soccer tournament taking place in Italy, in July 2018. The San Marino Cup is the largest Italian youth soccer tournament suited for young, promising footballers with a desire to showcase their talent. The tournament includes more than 100 teams from 18 different countries, playing host to approximately 3000 participants each year. This year commemorates the 17th edition of the tournament which will be played in the Rimini Riviera and San Marino Republic of Italy. The boys competed in a series of exigent trials attended by players from all over the Western Cape who were determined to make the cut. Ciaran Dammert (Grade 10), Mfundo Mashiya, Samuel Raats, Joshua Whitely, Tim Norton (Grade 11) and Nicholas Brokaar (Grade 12) were successfully able to impress and have earned themselves a coveted spot in the Cape Town Invitational team traveling to Europe later this year. The selectors were satisfied with the way in which the respective players were able

to demonstrate their proficient ability on the soccer field. The boys were handpicked out of a select few to join the squad on their travels to Lo Stivale (the bootshaped country) from the 8th to the 13th of July. The San Marino Cup serves as a great opportunity for these skilled footballers to broadcast their talent on an international level. Many players dream of receiving the exposure gained from participating in a tournament that is hosted by one of Europe’s finest footballing nations. Along with their selection, these young men have also been awarded the honourable responsibility of being ambassadors for South Africa. This is undoubtedly a great sporting, social and cultural experience characterised by a unique international atmosphere.Eighteen of PRG’s finest footballers will look to repeat an excellent performance at the annual U/19 Kloof High School football tournament in Durban. The group matches will take place on 22 and 23 June, with the knockout matches taking place on 24 June. The boys will be competing among South Africa’s elite footballing schools with a goal of eventually being crowned champions. Only 6 of the 18 players are in matric. Hopefully, the combination of experience and youthfulness will bring the team as much success as it did in previous years. The Paul Roos firsts and will be looking to avenge themselves after being knocked out by Glenwood in the quarter finals at last year’s edition of the highlycoveted tournament.

The exam time normally signifies an end to the first half of the hockey season, but this year is a bit different, like every other aspect of Paul Roos hockey this year. The late revamping of the Maties astro has led to a few difficulties in the Paul Roos hockey diaries. PRG Hockey had a false start to the season with trials and practices starting weeks after the regular date, due to the astros that were not finished.Paul Roos hockey players have nevertheless shown depth and quality with their results this term, with wonderful games against SACS, PBHS, Somerset College, Bridge House and DF Malan. Paul Roos’ short preparation time did, however, catch up on them when they faced schools with similar depth, like Bishops and Grey PE.

But the first XI did well this term in the context of their preseason, which was forced to be fitnessfocused because of the lack of time on the green carpet. The first team showed few inconsistent pockets, with some outstanding performances – like the thrashing of Somerset College (160)– and a brilliant display against Grey PE that nevertheless ended in a 12 loss. The 16As did not fully achieve the high standards expected of them. They lost more games than expected and lost some games where they were the overwhelming favourites. All of the above highlights the fact that Paul Roos needs an astro of its own. Players cannot improve their technical skills because of limited facilities in terms of individual practising. If you look at the players making under 14B/C teams, you will see that they usually stay in the B or C teams until matric, because

they cannot practise on their own and challenge the players above them.Paul Roos has the best coaches in SA, but not the facilities. This raises the question, why do we spend more money on sports of which the facilities already give pupils the competitive edge, but do not provide the facilities where they are sorely needed? On a more positive note, there are juicy interschools matches awaiting Paul Roos after the June holidays. The Cape Town Schools Hockey Festival is coming up, which will entail matches against the great hockey schools in the Western Cape, not to mention the oncoming clash against Grey College. Paul Roos’ fixtures are all that a hockey enthusiast wants and much more. There is certainly much to look forward to in Paul Roos hockey this year, and in the years to come.

hier is solank enkele hoogtepunte.
