Muscles and fat

• Muscles require energy, and so does fat. • However muscles use more energy

when they are used more often in exercise.

• Fat cannot be made to use more energy.

• So people who exercise more, and have more muscle, will use more energy.

• This means they need more food.

Metabolic rate

• This is a measure of how quickly your body uses up energy when you are not doing anything

• Muscles use more energy than fat in their basic reactions, so men tend to have a higher Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) than women.

• Exercise also increases BMR.
