    Dietary Guidelines

    and Food List

    Use the following guidelines to individualizeyour meal plan:

    1. Eat three regular meals a day without

    snacks since all food stimulates acid output.

    2. Eat foods slowly, chew well and avoid

    stomach distention with large quantities of

    food.

    3. Use milk sparingly because it stimulates

    gastric acid secretion.

    4. Use salt and very mild seasonings.

    Avoid heavy spices such as chili peppers,black pepper,

    chili powder and highly seasoned foods.

    5. Dietary fiber may be added since there is

    no evidence that dietary is harmful.

    6. Choose whole grain, enriched, or refined

    breads and cereals. Avoid large amounts of

    unprocessed bran.

    7. Cook by baking, boiling, broiling, roasting,

    stewing, microwaving or creaming. Avoid

    frying.

    8. Avoid caffeinated beverages, coffee and

    tea products because of the caffeine,

    theobromine,

    and tannins.

    9. Citric acid juices may be irritating to some

    individuals.

    10. Avoid aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-

    inflammatory drugs, alcohol and smoking.

    DESCRIPTION The basic food groups are used for

    planning nutritionally adequate meals.

    Active gastric irritants are avoided..Most foods stimulate gastric secretionsand are therefore not useful as buffers.

    Purpose The foods included are limited to non-stimulating, non-irritating and mildlyseasoned products.

    This diet should be individualizedaccording to your appetite and food

    tolerance. With time and

    recovery, you may be able to expandthis diet to you tolerances.

    A bland diet can be used to treatulcers, heartburn, nausea, vomiting,

    diarrhea, and gas. You may also need

    a bland diet after stomach or intestinalsurgery.

    Nutrients ModifiedAll nutrients are available on the Bland Diet.

    Texture is modified by offering items that are

    easily digested, moderately low in roughage

    and very mildly seasoned products. Tender

    foods are used such as cooked vegetables,canned fruits, and refined breads and cereals.

    Fried foods and highly seasoned foods, pepper,

    caffeinated beverages and alcohol may causedistress and, therefore, are eliminated.

    GENERAL ADVICETake 4 to 6 meals daily, avoid large and heavy

    meals. Eat meals slowly and chew food very

    well. Avoid rush and hurry before and after

    meals. If possible rest before and after eating.

    Avoid smoking and drinking of alcoholic

    beverages, especially on an empty stomach.

    Anxiety and insufficient sleep may be involved.

    Rest well and avoid stress.

    boiled, mashed, diced or creamed. Sweet potato and

    yams.

    Fried potatoes or any with

    Breads Grains Enriched breads. Cooked or ready-to-eat cereals.Tortillas, dinner rolls, English muffins, melba toast,

    rusks, zwieback, saltines, crackers.

    None

    Fruits Vegetables All fruit and juices. All vegetables and vegetable juices. Citrusfruits as tolerated. Gas-forming vegetables

    Desserts Sweets Custard, vanilla or fruit flavored cornstarch puddings.Tapioca pudding, sherbet, ice cream or ice milk

    except chocolate and peppermint. Pies, pastries.

    Flavored and plain gelatin. Junket. Plain or iced cakes,

    sponge cake, angel food or pound cake, cookies

    without chocolate or peppermint. Sugar, jam, jelly,

    honey, syrup.

    Any containing chocolate,

    cocoa or other seasonings not

    allowed.

    Beverages Decaffeinated tea. Cereal beverages such as Postumand Pero. Juices as allowed. Allowed carbonated

    beverages.

    Coffee, tea, decaffeinated

    ning caffeine, alcoholic

    beverages.

    Miscellaneous Salt, lemon and lime juice, vanilla and other extractsand flavorings. Sage, cinnamon, thyme, mace, allspice,

    pirin, without the

    recommendation of your

    physician.
