2019 Priorities: Writing – Differentiation – Inclusion Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
This week brings us to the end of my time here at Central State School. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with students, parents and of course, the dedicated and hard-working team I would like to extend huge thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I have been in touch with Ms Whelan, who is very much looking forward to returning to school on Monday. Make sure to ask Ms Whelan about her special holiday adventures! This week we experienced a situation that required a whole school lock down. I would like to commend the quick thinking actions of staff members for ensuring that all students were safe and accounted for and to students for being calm, sensible and responsible. A letter was sent home via email on Wednesday afternoon regarding the incident, please contact the school office should you require further clarification. Congratulations to all who were involved in the recent Entrepreneur’s Day. It was wonderful to see so many creative and successful stalls, all run by the students. There were bookmarks, cake stalls, jewellery, ice-cream spiders, special drinks and much more. One group also donated half of their profits back to the school to support the Year 5/6 Camp – a lovely gesture and wonderful to see our students wanting to give back and help others. Yesterday some Central staff members met at the CLAW for our first PLC Meeting.
A PLC is a professional learning community and involves collaboration, sharing and
ongoing critical interrogation of teaching practices in line with the AITSL
professional standards for teachers. The first piece of work that we are leading
together is focusing on developing a whole school approach for student goal
setting.

Vocabulary
As part of our Annual Implementation Plan all teaching staff and Teacher Aides have been participating in
professional learning alongside Townview State School staff around writing. Last week we came together to focus
on extending students’ vocabulary knowledge.
Caregivers are the first “language models” for children. The language children use is based on what they hear.
Caregivers can support student learning by creating an environment that enriches what a child hears simply by
increasing the amount of talk at home. Some fun activities you can try with your children to support their
vocabulary development include:
“Rhyme Time” - Start with things the child knows, such as parts of the body, and say, “I’m thinking of something on your face that rhymes with (sounds like) rose.” From this point, once your child gets the idea, you can play it just by saying words, such as “what’s a word that rhymes with car?” (jar, bar, star, far…) “How about a word that rhymes with junk?” (bunk, skunk, trunk-but even runk, lunk, zunk as nonsense words). Not only does this build vocabulary, but it also teaches the child to listen for the sounds in words.
“Word of the Week” – One person selects a word and the whole family must use that word as much as possible that week. You could write it somewhere prominent as a reminder. See who can use the word in context the most!
“Ten Questions” - One family member thinks of something, which the other players must guess with no more than ten questions. The first question should be “Is it a person, place or thing?” The following questions must be asked so that they can be answered by “yes” or “no.”
“Guess my Word” - One family member thinks of a word and gives the starting letters (or sound) and a simple definition. Everyone else tries to guess the word. For example, “I’m thinking of a word that starts with “br” that is something you use to paint a house.” (Brush) “I’m thinking of a word that starts with “tr” that is something we do to the bushes when they get too large.” (Trim)
“A picture paints a thousand words” – Print a picture (for example of a tree) and hang it on the fridge. Every time you or your child goes to the fridge use a new word to describe the image (see how their language becomes more precise!).
Wonder of Science
From Miss Gray in 2G
In week 2 our Years 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to participate in the Wonder of Science program
presented by The University of Queensland (UQ).
The program immerses students in inquiry as they are given a real-world problem / scenario to develop a
group response to. The Year 5s Science unit on light is being extended by the challenge to ‘Build and test a
simple device to demonstrate their understanding of reflection and refraction’. Whilst the Year 6s focus this
term is on natural disasters their inquiry is investigating how seismologists measure earthquakes. They have
been challenged to ‘Build and test a device that could be used to measure an earthquake’.
The Wonder of Science team will return to the school in week 6 to support the students in their design
process in the lead up to some Central students being selected to present their responses at a regional
conference with other Mount Isa schools. We wish our budding Scientists in the upper school the best of
luck!
This term in English the students in Year 2 have been looking at procedural texts. To reinforce the importance
of the different elements of a procedure, students were given the opportunity to follow recipes, including
apple pie and a vegemite and cheese sandwich.
As anticipated, the students made many errors in following the procedures. However, in doing so they came
to understand why the different elements of a procedure need to be specific, and why we must always follow
steps in order. Overall, it was a very valuable learning experience. The students enjoyed following
instructions and of course, devouring their delicious creations for morning tea. Well done 2G!
What’s been happening in 1S?
Hi, my name is Tayla Sheppard and I have had the pleasure of working with the fantastic students in 1S for the
last two weeks. I am currently a pre-service teacher completing my final Professional Experience placement.
In class, we have been working very hard to understand how to read digital and analogue clocks to the hour and
half hour. The students have had fun putting together analogue clocks and displaying different times on both
clocks. We will continue to explore activities that we do at different times in the day.
I am really looking forward to spending the next three weeks with these beautiful students.
Have a great weekend!
Miss Sheppard
SOME FRIENDLY REMINDERS
Supervision for students starts at
8am. Supervision only occurs around the
buildings – under A Block (Admin) and B Block
(near the tuckshop). Each morning we have two
aides allocated to these areas. Students are
expected to seat themselves. Normally, P-2 are
under A Block and Year 3-6 under B Block. This
is not necessary as some older students tend to
look after the little people and want to be in
their area. This is acceptable. It is however
expected that we would have no students in any
other areas including the playground. This is to
ensure the safety for all. Parents and carers are
most welcome to sit with students in the
morning to wait for the bell.
ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION
We are endeavouring to communicate with families electronically where practical. If you haven’t already done so, please provide the office with your email address. You can do this in person or by emailing [email protected] and placing your child’s name in the subject line. It is also important that we have updated contact details in-case of an emergency. Please make sure that all of your details are up to date.
