2.20 Apeasement

The Nazis had always made it clear that they did not think Germany should obey the‘shameful’ Treaty of Versailles.

Once the Nazis were in power they started breaking the Treaty of Versailles in the

following ways

! "n #arch$%&' (itler introduced conscription and build up a much larger army

and made an arrangement with Great )ritain to build warships.

! "n #arch $%&* (itler ordered the German army to reoccupy the +hineland and

waited for response from the ,eague of nations and the world powers but

nothing happened. )ritain and -rance were following a policy of appeasement

to aoid another /ar.

! "n October $%&* (itler signed the +ome!)erlin 01is with "taly2 now Germany

had a mayor ally.

! "n #arch $%&3 (itler organized a referendum 4The 0nschluss5 in 0ustria. Now

Germany has 6 mayor allies. The Treaty had forbidden Germany to hae allies

but the world powers did nothing still appeasing (itler to aoid a war.

! (itler was not satisfied yet. (e demanded the 7udetenland. (itler who now

had built up a strong army threatened with war if his demands were not met.

! "n 7eptember $%&3 the #unich 0greement was made with )ritain2 -rance2

"taly and Germany. 7aying there will be peace if the 7udetenland belongs to

Germany.

territorial demand. The list of appeasement continues.

still didn’t do anything.
