The Fayre will commence at 2pm with children’s fair rides, refreshments and a craft fayre, which will once again take place indoors at St. Luke’s Parish Centre. A candle-lit procession in- volving children from the local primary schools will leave St. Luke’s Church at 4pm. The procession, which will be led by Santa’s sleigh, will then make its way to the Town Hall gardens where carol singing will take place at 4.15pm. The official switching on of the town’s Christmas lights will then follow at 4.30pm. The honour of switching on the lights this year will fall to a pupil from Ferryhill Station Primary School. Any adults and children wishing to take part in the procession are asked to meet at St. Luke’s Church at 3.45pm, where ‘glow- in-the dark sticks’ will be issued to all those taking part. Santa has also promised to make an appearance again this year and will be visiting the E-Café from 4.30pm-6.30pm to meet local children and give out presents from his special- ly-designed grotto. Tea and coffee will also be on sale in the E-Café, and there will be a chance to test your luck on the tombola. Later in the evening the activities will move to the Manor House where a per- formance by the Ferryhill Town Band will be taking place from 7pm. For any queries about the Christmas Fayre call John Rogerson at Ferryhill Town Hall on 01740 652157. Children from Ferryhill Station Primary School have been exploring the area’s industrial past this month, as part of the Ferryhill Village Atlas. With the help of archaeolo- gists from The Archaeologi- cal Practice Ltd, the pupils dug four 1m square test pits near Little Chilton, along the line of the old railway, which led from Fer- ryhill Station to Broom and Chilton Collieries. The children enthusiasti- cally threw themselves into the task, digging away with trowels and shovels. Their finds included metal and rubber fittings associ- ated with the railway track, fragments of 19th and 20th- century pottery, glass, coal, bricks and ash, giving the children a clear idea of the kind of activities associated with the railway. “Although the waggonways continuing on to Broom and Chilton collieries had been closed by the end of the 19th century, this section of line remained in use well into the 20th century to serve the Chilton Lime Works and Quarry and the finds the children have uncovered potentially span the full period”, com- mented archaeologist Alan Rushworth. The Ferryhill Village Atlas is part of the Limestone Land- scapes Partnership Pro- gramme and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, 4 Together AAP and livin housing association. Permis- sion to dig in his field was very kindly given by farmer Rob Morgan. Digging up Chilton’s past Children from Ferryhill Station Primary School with some of their finds. On Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October, Chilton Primary School/Community College and One Point held a free family arts and community event. As part of the event, the school organised a family scarecrow competition and were amazed when they received 85 entries! Class winners were given

a £10 voucher and each entry received a small gift. Artist Jilly Greenwood went into the school to work alongside children, who produced a vast array of fantastic art work, which, along with various pieces of art donated from talented local community members, were displayed at the event.Over 80 people attended

the Community Event on the Saturday, when adults and children took part in puppet, printing and junk band workshops before enjoying a hearty cup of homemade soup and a bun. “There was a fantastic atmosphere with excellent feedback from everyone who attended,” said a spokesperson.

Toddler Group to be ‘Rainbow Tots I.C.F’The article printed in last week’s issue may have been misleading due to a misunderstand-ing on the Chapter‘s behalf. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. The article should have read:The Sure Start Parent and Toddler Group, which held meetings at the Dean Bank Community Centre on Wednesdays, from 9.30am to 11am, ceased as of 31st October. However, the Parent and Toddler Group is pleased to announce it now takes on a new form as the

‘Rainbow Tots I.C.F.’ run by Immanuel Christian Fellowship. Meetings will run in a very similar way as the Sure Start sessions.Rainbow Tots will take place every Wednesday from 9.30am till 11am at the Dean Bank Commu-nity Centre. If you would like to know more about the changes to this service or have any concerns, call 01740 657 975 or 07707 562 646. Simply send a cheque for £5 made payable to “The Ferryhill History Society” (this includes P&P), to The Ferryhill History Society, 15 Widecombe Walk, Fer-ryhill, Co. Durham, DL17 8DD.For additional information contact Tim Brown (as-sistant chairman, for the society) on 01740 652771.

Local residents turned out in their droves for the remembrance Sunday service at both St Aidan’s Church and the Cenotaph in Chilton. Canon Jon Bell kindly led the church service and afterwards, leading the procession down to the Cenotaph, was Mr Peter Cooke and his wife, County Councillor Christine Potts and Mayor of Chilton, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce. The congregation observed a two minutes silence as they showed their respects to our fallen heroes. As Simon Howe played the Last Post, 23 wreaths were laid from various groups and organisations. A spokesperson for Chilton Town Council said, “We would like to thank St Aidan’s Church,

Simon Howe and all those involved, particularly members of the Church who led the service and provided the soup and re-freshments.“Once again special thanks to former Chilton County Councillor Brian Avery who funded the new PA system, which made a significant difference this year as everyone could hear the service.”Readers will be fully aware that next year the nation will mark the centenary of the start of the First World War. Chilton Town Council is planning to mark the event and are currently exploring various options. If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to mark the centenary, call into Chilton Town Council or telephone 01388 721788.

Everyone has ideas re-garding how public money should be spent. To have your say on what local projects should be funded through the 4 Together Partnership’s Your Money, Your Area, Your Views, visit Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, 30th November, to vote on the projects being proposed. The Ferryhill E-Café is one of those projects. The E-Café is a local facility providing youth facilities for young people in the

Ferryhill area. The Centre relies heavily upon external funding and this is your chance to support the facility by voting for a project to support the excel-lent work which it aims to achieve. The E-Café project would enable a range of activities to be organised for young people to participate in, which would also offer young people the oppor-tunity of achieving ASDAN Accreditation Awards. The youth facility aims to take young people off

the streets and provide alternative activities for them to channel their at-tention. Voting on the Area Action Partnership’s priorities for next year will also be taking place at the event so why not go along and have your say. For more information about the E-Café project, contact Laura Langdale, Youth Co-ordinator at the E-Café on: 07932805223. Chrysanthemum and vegetable show

‘Your Money, Your Area, Your Views’ - Your Chance

In the early hours of the morning on Sunday 3rd November, the ‘brand new’ County Durham Furniture Help Scheme, at Unit 18, Chilton Industrial Estate, is believed to have been broken into and set on fire. Police and 3 fire engines attended the scene and brought the blaze under control. The warehouse floor was believed to have been alight for some time before the emergency services were notified, causing extensive damage

and smoke damage through the entire unit. The building has been sealed off and is now inaccessible. The Unit had been secure and all doors were locked and pad-locked throughout, however it is believed that the point of entry was through a rear fire exit which was jemmied and forced open. The scene is currently under investiga-tion, arson is a strong pos-sibility although is yet to be officially confirmed. Chris Palmer (Managing Director of the CDFHS) devastated

Break - in and fire at the ‘brand new’ CDFHS Unit

Ferryhill and District Chry-santhemum and Vegetable Society held its 81st Annual Show on Saturday 9th November. Graeme Cooke, a novice grower, won most points in the flower section with Jeff Cutting winning most points in the vegetable section.Despite dwindling membership, the number of the exhibits increased from last year and the show was

very successful.A spokes-person from the Society said, “I would like to thank all members and sponsors for their continuing support and to all the members of the public who called in to view the show and hope to see everyone again next year”.Anyone wishing to join the society can contact Jeff Cutting on 01740 652042.

by the incident said, “this is a training and support facility and as such this fire will cause severe op-erational, commercial and business problems causing issues and concerns”. The undamaged contents of Unit 18, which housed ‘training, employability, furniture and white goods refurbishment’ services have been tirelessly moved into the existing unit 12 as a compromise. Despite this incident, the dedicated CDFHS is still operating as usual.

Poetry CornerRemembrance Day

By Victoria, aged 15

Poppies are the blood, of Soldiers saving lives

Poppies filled the fields, where husbands left their wives

We wear the Flanders poppies to remind us of the dead

Of those who sacrificed their lives, to the battle they were led

The poppies are to show us not to waste our precious breath

Because some people have no choice, they were taken young by death

Children lost their fathers, parents lost their young

All that pain and suffering can never be undone

We commemorate this sad event, November day eleven

Whilst all those brave and oh so bold, look down on us from Heaven

We think of those who lost their lives, the women and the men

They fought to try and bring back peace, we shall remember them

Ferryhill Dynamoes got off to a good start but could not find the net in their most recent fixture against Sacriston. After 20 minutes Sacris-ton got a quick break and took the lead, but Ferryhill equalised with a Reece Marshall cross and Stephen Ward finish. Again Sacriston got a break away and went into half time 1-2 up. After the break Ferryhill again equalised when Callum Walton rose like

a salmon to head home a Scott Maughan cross. Ferryhill looked the better side until a goal keeping howler from Ben Hunter, who dropped an easy catch into the back of his own net. Sacriston continued to press and only an amazing last ditch tackle from Luke Carr prevented them from scoring. In the last ten minutes The Dynamoes equalised from the penalty spot through Man-of-the-Match Jonathon Mason. Final score 3-3.

Dynamoes take on Sacriston

Healthy eating course to start after Christmas On Tuesday 6th November,

the Durham County Council planning Committee unani-mously approved plans to build a new village primary school in West Cornforth. The existing buildings of West Cornforth School date back to the 1920s, and these plans will modernise

the school and increase the its capacity. The current school will be demolished and replaced with a brand new ‘T-shaped’ facility. All going well, it is hoped new classrooms will be ready by the end of next year.

Ferryhill Celtic played in their 1st quarter final of the season at the weekend, when they entertained a very good Aycliffe club. Celtic, sen-sational for winning their last 22 games, played what proved to be an incredible game. Celtic started fast out of the traps playing wonder-ful one-touch football, which payed off when Ben Clarey played an inch perfect through-ball for the impressive Jonny Agar to hold of his marker and slot home for 1-0. Next it was the electric Celtic forward Lucas Linhart who finished from

close range, after great work from Dan Mitton and Liam Taylor on the left. It was all one way traffic, with Aycliffe not being able to cope with the pace of the game. 2-0 at the break. The Celtic started the second half in the same way as the first and, in the 60th minute it was 3-0 with Lucas Linhart getting his second. But with the game looking over, Aycliffe got a lifeline with a header from close range. Four minutes later it was 3-2 after another header from close range. Incred-ibly, with 10 minutes to go, Aycliffe equalized 3-3 with a 25 yard thunderbolt

into the top corner of the Celtic’s net, leaving it 3-3 at full time. With the Celtic starting to tear, it was Aycliffe who looked like they could go on and win the game, but you don’t win 22 games in a row without showing steel, and the Celtic cer-tainly did! They defended like lions, with the back three and keeper Kris Carr holding strong. Extra time ended without either side managing to score so the game went to penalties. Celtic held their nerve to win 4-2 with keeper Kris Car saving 2 and Neil Bell scoring the winner.
