The event commenced with a Craft Fayre in St Luke’s Parish Centre which despite the adverse weather conditions was well attended by both buyers and sellers. Carol singing at St Luke’s was followed by a candle lit parade led by Santa Claus in his sleigh which ended at Ferryhill Town Hall where children from the local schools held a carol service in the Town Hall gardens. At 4.30pm Brooklyn Latcham from Ferryhill Station Primary School switched on the Ferryhill Christmas Lights. The E Café had a Santa Claus Grotto which proved to be very popular with the younger children who attended the event. In conjunction with the E Café there was free face painting in the town hall. Due to the adverse weather conditions several of the fun fair attractions which were booked were unable to attend leaving only a children’s round about and a candy floss stall. All of these events were attended by hundreds of Ferryhill residents and their families. Later in the evening the Ferryhill Town Band enter- tained local residents at the Manor House where those attending joined in by carol singing. The Mayor, Councillor Peter Atkinson commented that this was once again a successful Christmas Fayre which despite the inclement weather was well attended and enjoyed by many of the residents of Ferryhill. This support was appreciated by members of the 2000 Committee and the Town Council who organised the event. Scout Hall appealThe 1st Ferryhill Scout Group is actively raising funds to enable them to refurbish the Scout Hall situated in Siemens Street. Once the work is completed, it is envisaged that the hall will be available for use by the wider community. The leaders and executive committee are therefore keen to ascertain the views of the residents of Ferryhill, particularly those in the Dean Bank area, as to the possible activities and uses which might be organised or suggested by

individuals or groups. Please forward your comments to D. Park, Chairman, 2 Woodland Mews, Sedgefield, Stockton on Tees, TS21 3EH.Donations towards the work are always welcome and greatly appreciated. The group, having been in existence since 1947, aims to continue offering challenge and adventure for youngsters aged 6 to 14 years old for many years to come and is committed to providing the best environ-ment in which this can be achieved.

E Cafe thanks Santa Claus

The E. Cafe staff and young members would like to thank Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and the little elves who kindly took time out of their busy schedule to visit the Santa’s grotto in the E. Cafe at Ferryhill. The weather wasn’t in anyones favour this year but it didn’t stop the young children from visiting the grotto and expressing their wishes for presents for this forth coming Christmas.Santa Claus told The Chapter that all the young

children have been really good and will be receiving gifts this year in their stockings. He also asked for them not to forget to leave a cookie and a carrot for himself and his reindeers. “I would like to thank all the public who attended this years Christmas fair, who continue in supporting the good work that the town council, our local schools, our staff workers do to make it the success it is” said a spokesperson

from the E Cafe.“Big thanks to Brain McCourt. We couldn’t have done it without you.” A total sum of £221.00 was raised from the Tombola, The terrible twins (Natalie & Nicole) plus one (Danielle) who’s parents donated an assortment of cakes and managed the refreshment stall. This money will help to reduce the costs of further trips that are planned to take place in 2011.

Free home insulationDurham County Council is turning up the heat for older people with an offer of free loft and cavity wall insulation. The authority is working in partnership with Scottish and Southern Energy to provide free insulation measures to homeowners who are aged over 70 or who receive benefi ts, through the Durham Home Insulation Scheme. Those who do not qualify for the free scheme can

take advantage of big discounts, with loft and wall insulation costing only £99 each.Cliff Duff, Durham County Council energy effi ciency team leader, said: “Cavity wall and loft insulation measures can be the most cost effective way to save energy in the home. Up to a third of the heat in your home is lost through the walls and roof and the quicker heat escapes from your home the higher your

heating bills will be.By insulating the walls and roof in your home, the heating system will not need to produce as much heat and this could save you up to £120 a year on your energy bills.”To apply for a free no obligation home survey contact Durham County Council’s Warm Homes team on 0191 527 0501 or e-mail [email protected]

Dear Editor,On behalf of many Chilton residents that attended the Christmas lights switch on I would like to recognise the excellent work carried out by the Christmas Lights fundraising group. The lights themselves are improving year on year, helping to make Chilton main street a festive and visually pleasing sight. Some people think the money comes from our Council tax, when in fact it is raised by the group holding coffee mornings, tombolas and this year through the Mayor Margaret Walton’s charity fun-draising events. So next time you see a fundraising event for the Lights Appeal dig deep into your pocket and next year you can tell friends and relatives that you helped contribute to the wonderful Christmas lights in Chilton.I would also like to thank the Ladies of St. Aidans Church for the lovely ginger wine and scrumptious mince pies and also a big thank you to Santa for making an appearance at his busy time of year and making my daughter’s and every other child’s evening that bit more special.

Dear Editor,I am writing regarding the letter from Mrs M Wright, Cornwall. My husband was John Morgan, and his father was one of the Morgan’s from Cleves Cross Farm. George, Robert, Ralph, Cecil, May, Ann, Molly and Harry! My father in-law was Cecil, who moved to West House Farm Garmondsway, and then to Town Farm, Wilton. Since 1961 I lived with my husband John Morgan (who sadly died) at West House Farm, Garmonds Way (I still live there now). The Morgan family loved sport, and I can remember tales of Great Grandpa Morgan paying miners to take the day off work in order to play cricket. All the girls of the family also played cricket.I did visit the farm house on a few occasions, but unfortunately it was demolished a few years after I was married in 1961.I wonder if there is any possibility of purchasing a copy of the photograph which Mrs Wright mentioned in her letter? I am not sure, but I think the stone marker still exists. Mrs Beryl MorganWest House Farm

Poetry CornerRobin’s Roost

Perky Cock Robin is never sadHe doesn’t care a fig if the weather is bad

His orange waistcoat, now red for winter hardWill make him main actor on many a Christmas card

The hedgerows, now covered by snowy layerBut Robin Redbreast still doesn’t care

Flitting about from bird bath to bird tableEating as many crumbs as he is able

Hawthorn, rose hips and berries on hollyVaries his diet makes him fat and jollyThe nut basket hanging from a tree

Is his, as he defends his territoryBravely he puts up a fight

Chasing off blackbirds with all his mightPerched at the top for all to see

He surveys his domain from his favourite treeRobin’s roost, searching for next springs nest

Our red feathered friend is Britain’s bestIn an old kettle or plant-pot on the groundNext breeding season his chicks will be found

In time they’ll fledge and fly awayTo find their own patch to breed one day

Another of mother natures wonders to be hadAs the sight of the Robin always makes us feel glad.

Cannabis growth problemsKevin Garside pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis resin and of producing 41 plants at his home in Verdun Terrace, West Cornforth. The 30 year old was appearing before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe who were told how the police had searched his home and discovered a growth set-up in two first floor bedrooms. Garside, who had previously

been an alcoholic and was now a recovering heroin addict, had wanted to avoid contact with drug dealers as well as to save himself some money and it was for this reason he had grown his own. Garside had previously served a custodial sentence for robbery and since his release had moved into the area and appeared to be turning his life around. In mitigation the defence

solicitor stated that a custodial sentence for these offences was not likely to be of help to him and “as we all know drugs are as readily available inside prison as outside”. Matters were adjourned in order for the Probation Service to prepare a Pre-sentence Report, the defendant was released on unconditional bail and will now return to the court on 16th December.

Criminal damageWilliam Thomas Gray of High Street, Ferryhill, pleaded guilty before Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates to damaging a rear door belonging to Sonia Russ on the 14th November. That night Sonia Russ had been attending her niece’s birthday party and had gone on to another public house in Ferryhill when, at around midnight, she was approached be her ex- partner, Gray, who shouted

at her. Sonia Russ left the public house at 1.30am and at around 3.00am she heard him banging at the door of her home. Police were called and Gray was arrested. Sonia Russ, who rents the house, has two small children, who were not on the premises that night, stated that Gray can become violent when drunk and that she did not want

her children to witness this type of behaviour. The defendant was dis-appointed to be before the courts, expressed his willingness to pay for the damage and was now reunited with his partner. The court fined him £65 for the criminal damage, ordered him to pay £100 compensation to Sonia Russ, £85 in costs and £15 victim support surcharge.

Due in courtRobert Andrew Blackett, aged 43, of Tennyson Road, Chilton was due before mag-istrates at Newton Aycliffe to face three charges relating to the illegal production and distribution of CDs, DVDs and computer games without the licence of the copyright holder. The offences allegedly took place on or between 1st January 2004 and 31st

September 2009.Lee Martin Brown, aged 25 years of Barrington Terrace, Dean Bank, Ferryhill, faces charges relating to driving matters on the 13th November. It is alleged that he took without consent of the owner and caused damage to a Toyota Previa as well as driving the vehicle without licence or insurance.

Appeal for informationOn Tuesday 23rd November a shed was broken into at Raby Road, Ferryhill, and a large number of high value tools were stolen. Amongst which were a Honda generator, a Karcher pressure washer and a large number of snap-on hand tools. If anyone has any informa-tion about this theft, or the whereabouts of any of the items they are asked to call

PC 2106 Barclay on 0345 60 60 365 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.At the weekend thieves broke into the Quarry Fields, near Davy Street and stole a very heavy railway trolley with solid wheels and a turntable, worth over £800. There must have been a number of people involved in this theft, as the trolley weighs

8 – 10cwt (~450kg) and was lifted over two fences. It was stolen between 4pm on Sunday 28th November and 9.30am on Monday 29th November. At the same time two Land Rover wheels and tyres and a Land Rover gearbox were also taken. A reward is on offer for the recovery of these items. If you have any information please contact 0345 60 60 365.
