Context

• From the network information it can be conclude that 22% of our subscribers do not touch the network in a 48 hour period, the comparative figure in other Caribbean markets is 7%;

• Project goal was to increase the number of subscribers on the network by offering power solutions throughout the country through solar charging sites and capitalizing on existing power sources of our stores and antenna sites;

• In offering the solution we will also create micro business for women in Haiti while respecting the current grey market that exists for charging phones;

• In rolling out the power solution’s, we will enhance the brand image by offering Digicel’s customers exclusive power options and rural lighting.

Solutions Identified (Current Status)

• Network of solar cell charging stations - 510 identified have been rolled

out;

• Cell site charging box’s – 300 identified and rolled out;

• Stores/Kiosks with no power source provided a unit on a 12 month rental agreement – 50 test units rolled out, area for growth 550 stores that are off grid in Haiti will be supplied with a more sturdy/higher quality unit (ongoing);

• Stores/Kiosk’s with existing power, supplied with basic AC charging units (300);

Comments from community: • Operational from 6am-9pm, 4 food vendors

have located under the light in evenings; • Main PAP – Mirebalalis bus stops under light

to collect money, truck drivers complete paper work under light, people read under it;

• It will not be vandalized or stolen as people in community value the unit.

Other Greening Project’s/ Next Steps

• First phase of greening 10% Haiti sites with solar solutions currently in progress

• Currently in communication with vendors for alternative options of powering sites in more efficient and greener way

• Exploring possible options of merging the current telecom infrastructure with electrification of rural communities and telecom sites

• Reviewing other countries and operations that have similar challenges in order to bring know how and technology in our operations
