Router Port Forwarding SECTION 4

50 SOFTWARE MANUAL | Copyright © 2007 Digimerge Technologies Inc.

Router Port ForwardingIn order to view the device remotely (over the Internet), follow the steps outlined on the following 5 pages to setup a free DDNS Remote Access account.

You will need to enable port forwarding on your Router to allow for external communications with your Device. The following ports will need to be forwarded to remotely connect to your Device:

• Video Port 554

• Web Port 80

Computers, IP Devices, and other devices inside your network can only communicate directly with each other within the internal network. Computers and systems outside your network cannot directly communicate with these devices. When a system on the internal network needs to send or receive information from a system outside the network (i.e. from the Internet), the information is sent to the Router.

When a computer on the Internet needs to send data to your internal network, it sends this data to the external IP address of the Router. The Router then needs to decide where this data is to be sent to. This is where setting up Port Forwarding becomes important.

Port Forwarding tells the router which device on the internal network to send the data to. When you set up port forwarding on your Router, it takes the data from the external IP address:port number and sends that data to an internal IP address:port number (i.e Router External IP 216.13.154.34:554 to IP Device Internal IP 192.168.0.3:554).

To locate your external IP address, visit http://www.whatismyip.com

NOTE: If using multiple IP Devices on the same network, each device will need to be assigned to a different remote access port.

Appendix #1 - Video

Revisio

Appendix #1 - Video StreamingThe DigiViewer Software can stream images from the IP device using either:

• Motion JPEG• MJPEG-4

Motion JPEG Streaming

Motion JPEG streaming uses standard JPEG still images for the video stream. These images are displayed and updated at a rate which creates a video stream of quickly changing images.

Motion JPEG streaming uses high bandwidth, but provides a very high quality image. To use Motion JPEG, change the settings in the DigiViewer using a web browser.

MPEG-4 Streaming

MPEG-4 streaming uses a video compression standard that provides a high quality video stream using low bandwidth (less than 1 Mbit/s). The simple coding type is used by programs such as QuickTime™ for playback.

When using MPEG-4 streaming, the bit rate can be controlled, which in turn allows the amount of bandwidth usage to be controlled. CBR (Constant Bit Rate) is used to achieve a specific bit rate by varying the quality of the MPEG-4 stream. When using VBR (Variable Bit Rate), the quality of the video stream is kept as constant as possible, at the cost of a varying bit rate.

• RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) serves as a control protocol, and is used by a viewing client to start a unicast session.

• Unicasting is communication between a single sender and a single receiver over a network. This means that the video stream goes independently to each user, and each user gets their own stream. A benefit of unicasting is that if one stream fails, it only affects one user.

Appendix #1 - Video Streaming

Bit Rate Control

Limiting the maximum bit rate is a good way of controlling the bandwidth used by the MPEG-4 video stream. Leaving the Maximum bit rate as unlimited will provide a consistently good image quality, but at the expense of increased bandwidth usage whenever there is more activity in the image. Limiting the bit rate to a defined value will prevent excessive bandwidth usage, but images will be lost when the limit is exceeded.

NOTE: A maximum bit rate can be used for both variable and constant bit rates

The bit rate type can be set to:

• Variable Bit Rate (VBR) - VBR will adjust the bit rate according to the images' complexity, thus using a lot of bandwidth for a lot of activity in the image and less for lower activity in the monitored area.

• Constant Bit Rate (CBR) - CBR allows you to set a fixed Target bit rate that will consume a predictable amount of bandwidth, and which will not change whatever happens in the image.

Digimerge Network Video Servers - Limited 3 Year Hardware Warranty (cont.)No claims or statements regarding the product, whether written or verbal, by salespeople, retailers, dealers or distribu-tors, that are not contained in this limited warranty or in the owner's manual are authorized by Digimerge and do not modify or expand this warranty. Some countries, states, or provinces do not allow the exclusion or limitation of implied warranties or the limitation of incidental or consequential damages for certain products supplied to consumers or the limitation of liability for personal injury. To the extent that such restrictions on limitations apply to the products, the above limitations and exclusions may be limited in their application. In that case, when the implied warranties are not allowed to be excluded in their entirety, they will be limited to the duration of the applicable written warranty, and if damages may not be limited then the above limitations on damages apply, but only to the greatest extent permitted by local law.
