Amy Livingstone and Julie Wilson started award
winning nursery brand Cheeky Chompers
when they were on maternity leave with their
first children.
Amy and I were lucky to meet through having
children however we never imagined we’d set
up business together soon after! The business
came out of our experiences when our babies
were teething and we were constantly picking up
and sterilising dropped teethers – ‘Why doesn’t
someone invent a teether that stays attached to
the baby’ we thought…We launched the world’s first chewy dribble bib
the Neckerchew in 2013 and haven’t looked back!
We make all our fabric products in the UK and
have designed a range of stylish and innovative
everyday parenting essentials to make parents’
lives that little bit easier. All our products are
practical, attachable, machine washable and
stringently tested to worldwide standards. Our award winning Cheeky Chompers range
is now nine products strong, offering the
Neckerchew, Comfortchew, Neckerbib, Chewy
the teething hippo, the Cheeky Blanket and an
adaptation of our Neckerchew for older children
and adults with oral sensory stimulation needs.
In 2017 we launched the Muslin Collection
comprising four innovative products made from
100% super soft organic muslin: Neckerchew,
Neckerbib, Comforter and our latest innovation
the MultiMuslin, one beautiful teething muslin with
six clever uses. We launch stylish new designs
every Spring and Autumn and our latest product
will launch in May!We appeared on Dragons’ Den eleven weeks in
to business with the Neckerchew and whilst the
Dragons loved the product they did not believe
our projections. When it aired a year later we
benefited from a fantastic PR boost and traffic to
our website had an astonishing uplift during and
after the broadcast. It’s amazing the recognition
that early appearance has brought us. We’re
pleased to say that we smashed all the figures the
Dragons’ dismissed within a year of business so
we’re one of the ones that got away!
We founded the business with our own funds and
support from friends and family and continued
to fund our growth from company profits, with
no external investment. We have enjoyed rapid
growth and are delighted to have sold more
than one million Cheeky Chompers products
around the world. We are the baby gift of choice
in many high street stores such as John Lewis,
JoJo Maman Bebe, Boots and overseas export
accounts for over 70% of our turnover as we
export to 36 countries with the USA, China, Taiwan
and Australia being our largest. In 2017 we were
delighted to be the only Scottish winners of the
prestigious Natwest Everywoman Award and our
products continue to win awards across the world!
However, it hasn’t been all plain sailing. Neither
of us had backgrounds in retail and it has been
a steep learning curve understanding barcodes,
pallets, MOQ’s and the export documentation!
We invested heavily in IP and then successfully
gained first to market positioning in key markets,
but have had many battles enforcing our IP. We
have fought hard to manufacture our products
here in the UK and maintaining a competitive
price is a constant consideration. We work hard
to constantly innovate, refresh and stay one
step ahead which means you can never get to
the end of the to do list! All that couples with a
growing team, two on maternity leave and our
young children and families it’s all about effective
juggling. Running your own business is certainly
not the easy option- but definitely very rewarding!
Maternity leave leads toBusiness!
Do something you’re passionate about and excites you- this motivates you at work and home!

SPRING ARRIVALS INHAIRDRESSING
Taylor Ferguson Hairdressing | Tel: 0141 332 0397 | 106 Bath St, Glasgow G2 2EN
Anne Ferguson is a director of celebrity stylist Taylor
Ferguson Hairdressing. With Spring, the season of freshness
and renewal, almost upon us, Anne focuses on all that’s new in the world of hairdressing. MAD ABOUT THE CURLSWe have many clients who are all about the
curls. They have wonderfully natural curly hair
that delivers a unique look. We’re always on the
lookout for new products that can enhance that
curly appearance. Schwarzkopf’s Mad About
Curls & Waves collection is a holistic care and
styling regime dedicated to curls and waves.Their Mad About Curls High Foam Cleanser
is a sulfate-free formula that gently cleanses
all curl types. It adds softness, improves the
manageability factor and delivers curl definition.
The Mad About Waves Sulfate Free Cleanser
is a gentle cleansing formula for wavy hair
leaving the hair hydrated and giving your waves
definition.
GIVE THAT YELLOW LOOK THE HEAVEIf your hair colour preference is blonde, then
there can be many factors that could result in
your hair generating a bit of a yellow hue. None
of us would opt for it so if it happens we tend to
look in the mirror and panic then rush out to the
salon for a fix!
Goodbye Yellow is the very aptly named
new shampoo product from Schwarzkopf
Professional. It’s their first highly-pigmented
anti-yellow wash. It’s free of SLS/SLES sulfates
and so this wash provides a gentle cleansing
action and instant tonal deposit to counteract
and neutralize underlying warm tones. According
to the makers, their unique pigment combo
of purple and blue is created to neutralise
unwanted yellow undertones while at the same
time cleanses your hair. They’ve adjusted the PH level to 4.5 so there are effective and long-lasting results. So for us out there who do favour the blonding look, it’s farewell to any yellow tinges and hello to clear, bright and beautiful blonde hair. Also means that the warmer tones will be replaced by really Nordic, super cool, ice blonde looks.

NATIONWIDE CONNECTIVITY
#BWSMAGAZINE
Scotland-wide access to broadband and mobile
connectivity is key to a strong economy and a
more inclusive Scotland. The Scottish Government
and its partners (the UK Government, Highlands
and Islands Enterprise, BT, local authorities and
the European Regional Development Fund) have
invested over £400 million in the Digital Scotland
Superfast Broadband (DSSB) programme. More
than 800,000 premises in Scotland can now access fibre broadband, and by the end of 2017 at
least 95% of premises across Scotland will have
access to a fibre broadband network. Following
strong take up figures, £17.9 million was reinvested
back into the programme which will ensure thousands more premises benefit via an extended
build, by the end of 2018.Instant internetVivienne Seeley runs her graphic design
consultancy, VivID, from her home in the Scottish
Borders. Vivienne designs brand identities, websites and other marketing materials for her
local and UK-wide client-base. Vivienne says: “Fibre broadband has made a huge
difference to me. I need to send large design files
to clients and printers and in the past, this could
take ages. The internet connection would often
crash and I would need to start again, which was
really frustrating. Now, files are sent instantly. I just
don’t have to think about the technology any more,
I can get on with my business.” Upgrade promotes household harmony With two teenage children and a husband who
runs a recruitment company from home, Vivienne
says that before they had a fibre connection, all
four of them would compete for the available
bandwidth. “Our two
businesses tended to come first, which meant that
my sons were frustrated because they could not
do what they wanted online such as play X-Box
games or download videos. So it is fantastic for us
that now everyone can enjoy the same fast speeds
regardless of how many people are online at the
same time.”
Vivienne’s husband Paul agrees. “I log into our
office network from home and find that now we have fibre broadband, the connection is considerably faster and more reliable.” Key points to note:• Due to the scale and complexity of the task
at hand, it’s not possible to connect all areas
at once. • Both the current commercial and DSSB
programmes are still in the process of rolling
out fibre broadband.• To find out where and when fibre broadband
will roll-out in your area visit www.scotlandsuperfast.com• You’ll need to contact your service provider to
switch to fibre broadband as this doesn’t happen
automatically.• Beyond the current programme, the Scottish
Government has made the commitment of
delivering 100% superfast broadband across
Scotland by 2021. • Some residents may be eligible for a subsidised
basic broadband installation; designed to
provide a better broadband connection for those
on the lowest speeds ahead of any future public
investment in superfast broadband. Further

BWS Questions with….INVESTING WOMENWhat was your own career background? In 1990 at the age of 25 I was appointed CEO of
regional economic development agency, Gordon
Enterprise Trust where I was privileged to work
alongside a board of inspirational entrepreneurs
who greatly influenced my own future thinking.
I went on to run three companies, ranging from
a 50-employee business to my own enterprise
policy consultancy founded in 2003. I later
became the UK’s first Advisory Board Member to
the Global Banking Alliance for Women, based in
Washington DC.What inspired you to launch Investing Women?
I was driven by both passion and frustration to help
overcome some of the barriers preventing female
entrepreneurs from achieving their full potential.
Access to finance for female-led companies
was a key area of focus through my work for
the UK Government; where I led on this issue.
Through my business activity in the US, I became
aware of the ‘echo effect,’ where a rise in female
angel investors has been proven to be closely
mirrored by an increase in women-led companies
gaining investment. I wanted to replicate that
phenomenon in Scotland. What has Investing Women done? We established a dynamic network of
experienced businesswomen who are keen to
help other female entrepreneurs achieve growth
and financial investment. We then created our
AccelerateHER Awards and annual Ambition
and Growth Conference to provide a platform
for aspiring businesswomen. This approach is
working: this year we doubled the number of
awards entries to almost 190. In the first two
years of the awards, finalists have raised over
£3.75m in investment between them. Investing
Women has invested in 10 companies to date, 80
per cent of which have female founders in their
growing teams. The overall investment leveraged
exceeds £10m as we frequently invest alongside
other investment syndicates. TC Biopharm,
Scottish Biotechnology and Sofant Technologies
are among those exciting companies we’ve
supported.
Is it right to focus solely on women entrepreneurs?
The phenomenal opportunity for economic
growth represented by women entrepreneurs
is still far from being fully realised. Achieving gender equality will be a
wonderful outcome from releasing this potential; and it is the wider economy that will benefit. Increasing the number of female-led start-up businesses to the same level of those run by men would
deliver a five per cent boost to our economy,
equivalent to over £7.6bn. And that’s before these companies start to grow and scale!. Does Scotland provide a good environment for
female entrepreneurs? There are many positives. Scotland is rich in
innovation and we lead the world in areas such as
life sciences and technology - including Fintech,
which offers great economic potential. We have
an entrepreneurial ecosystem the envy of many
other countries and both this ecosystem and the
Scottish Government are increasingly proactive
in supporting female entrepreneurs. Partners in
the ScotCanDo backed Framework for Women’s
Enterprise and emerging programmes like
Unlocking Ambition are achieving real impact
here. Thanks to the great support of LINC
Scotland; Scotland has a strong, collaborative
business angel community. This is of growing
importance to Scottish companies given 2017
saw business angels invest and leverage £54m to
boost Scotland’s most innovative businessesWhat would define success for Investing Women?
For us, success is seeing equal levels of female
and male business angel investors in the future.
This will mean a near doubling of current levels of
investment into Scottish companies and, applying
the ‘echo effect,’ will help significantly more
women grow their companies across international
markets.

HAIR EXTENSIONS IN YOURLUNCH BREAK?It’s a specific and expert art to deliver a full head of natural looking hair extensions for a client – and it takes time. We’ve built up our expertise over decades. Depending on the look
you desire – whether you crave extra volume or
length or both - and the number of extensions
strands we apply it could take anything up to
three hours or more. But a new 2018 product launch by Great Lengths, the quality hair extensions specialists,
has revealed the brand’s GL Tapes. Dubbed as
‘fast-track luxury’, the GL Tapes use the same
quality, luxurious real human hair as traditional
extensions. There’s no difference in the flexibility
– you can curl, trim and really treat like normal
hair. The extensions remain invisible – and only the desired effect is seen. Two major differences are the speed of application – a full head could be done in just over an hour, depending on head size etc – and the fact they can be reapplied. So the makers reckon
they can last up to eight weeks – and after that
you can have them reapplied. GL Tapes are especially good if you’ve never previously worn
hair extensions. They’re easy to manage – yet
have all the same luxury quality. Price for a half
head would cost around £400, depending on
the look desired and strands applied. We offer
free no obligation consultations.
STRAIGHTEN UPHair straightening, relaxing or smoothing treatments have come a long way in recent years. The systems devised by the Nanokeratin
brand have been well tried and tested for us and our clients over a long period. Some of our clients with particularly frizzy hair tell us the treatments have been ‘life changing’ – and
one raved about how she could now go out in
the rain walking the dog and no longer fear her
crowning glory would convert to a frizz-bomb!
Currently there is the treatment that requires
the client to stave off washing their hair post-application for a full three days. Wash it before
and the impact isn’t the same. Their newest application no longer requires that
wait-time so if you were heading off on holiday
or needed straightening or frizz removal for an
imminent special occasion that would tick the
box. Prices for both start from £250 including a
cut and blow dry.
A new haircare regime for curls or waves.
