PROJECT UPDATE —— The Digital Dentistry Curriculum Initiative continues to grow in momentum and anticipation leading up to its public launch in April 2018.

Over the past 7 months, a hands-on mentorship program has driven the implementation of the digital curriculum within 5 pilot schools. Through this phase of the initiative, leadership has trialed and refined the curriculum prior to its becoming available to dental schools nationwide.

Through the collaborative efforts and support of Henry Schein, Inc., American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) and the American College of Prosthodontists Education Foundation (ACPEF), steps are actively being taken to ensure digital dentistry is transforming dental education and ultimately creating pathways for better patient care.

UPCOMING EVENT —— 2018 ADEA Annual Session Affiliate Event held by ACP/ACPEFmarch 17, 2018 gaylord palms resort & convention center / kissimmee, fl palm beach room / 1:00pm–2:30pm

This event presents a unique opportunity to learn about the Digital Dentistry Curriculum Initiative for predoctoral education programs that are currently in the pilot phase. Faculty from the five dental institutions will report on their progress on implementing the digital curriculum into their predoctoral programs. Each school brings a unique perspective and experience to the table. In addition, the program will showcase the experience of members of the ACP Digital Dentistry Curriculum Initiative Task Force and pilot school mentors who have been working directly with the pilot institutions with the goal of advancing digital dentistry in dental schools across the nation.

PILOTING PHASE – ASSESSMENT RESULTS During the piloting phase, an assessment was distributed to the pilot schools with the goal of collecting data to evaluate the effectiveness of the piloting program and aid in the enhancement of the digital dentistry curriculum. The following is a sampling of the assessment results:

UCLA School of Dentistry

• The establishment of the IT infrastructure for a robust, cross-disciplinary integrated digital dentistry identified as a schoolwide strategic imperative.

• The Dean has allocated significant space and financial resources to create a modern, state of the art digital dentistry center.

• A schoolwide committee, led by Ben Wu, has been formed to make the final recommendations for the digital center, equipment selected, the curriculum changes, and the research opportunities.

University of Kentucky College of Dentistry

• Successfully navigated IT challenges including connectivity, obtaining licenses and workflow.

• Began training of faculty despite delays during summer due to late arrival and setup of equipment.

• Established open communication channels between vendor(s) and school to install equipment and software.
