Predictive Modeling & Human Behavior – Social, Cultural & Ethical DimensionCountless highly accurate predictions can be made from trace data, with varying degrees of personal or societal consequence (e.g., search engines predict hospital admission, gaming companies can predict compulsive gambling problems, government agencies predict criminal activity). Predicting human behavior can be both hugely beneficial and deeply problematic depending on the context. • What kinds of predictive privacy harms are emerging?• And what are the implications for systems of oversight and due process protections? For

example, what are the implications for employment, health care and policing when predictive models are involved?

• How should varied organizations address what they can predict?

Predicting Human Behavior by Alex Rosenblat, Tamara Kneese, and Danah Boyd A workshop primer produced for: The Social, Cultural & Ethical Dimensions of “Big Data” March 17, 2014 - New York, NY

Digital Disruption & BeyondOfficial Definition

Digital disruption is the change that occurs when new digital technologies and business models affect the value proposition of existing goods and services.

Unofficial Definition – 5 people in a garage now have access to the same technology as the “Big Guys” to provide goods and services disrupting entire business models and multi billion dollar industries.

Often confused with disruptive technology described as a new technology that displaces an established technology. Ex. PC displaced the typewriter and forever changed the way we work and communicate.

Digital Disruption & BeyondDoes it seem that things are moving faster than ever before?

• Moore's law states that the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles about every two years. Moore's law predicts that this trend will continue into the foreseeable future.

• Most experts expect Moore's law to hold for another two decades. Some studies have shown physical limitations could be reached by 2017.

• Thanks to nanotechnology, some transistors are smaller than a virus.

• We do know that the doubling of the number of circuits has slowed, and integrated circuits cannot get much smaller as transistors approach the size of an atom.

Digital Disruption & BeyondDigital Disruption, No Big Deal Right?

• We’re at a critical time for the digital economy.• Digital is no longer the shiny front end of the organization – it’s

integrated into every aspect of today’s companies.• Leaders are struggling to set a digital strategy, shift organizational

structures, and remove the barriers that are keeping them from maximizing the potential impact of new digital technologies.

• Time of adaption of new ideas and business models have never been faster.• Competition has never been greater due to technology access.• Technology barriers upon us have never been this great. Basic laws that

have predicted past progress are going away.

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe Problem.

• The problem is that we are trying to predict the future and solve problems based upon an historical perception and that’s why most are missing it. This is all new never experienced before. There is no historical reflection.

Media – 72% Disruption Expected

Why: The digitalization of the media industry has been driven by changing

consumer behavior and expectations, especially among younger

generations who demand instant access to content, anytime, anywhere.

The worlds aging population is leading the demand for health and

wellness, entertainment and education services designed for older

people. Urbanization has contributed to increased demand for media

offerings around commutes and busy work lives.World Economic Forum Report

Digital Disruption & BeyondWhy are companies not addressing?

• Cash Cow – Not willing to make the change.

• Business as usual.

• Someone else will do it.

• Get to it later.

• Can’t see vision.

• The world will always need my product.

By the time these companies realize they are in trouble, there will not be enough time or resources to recover.

Why are companies not addressing?

• Companies must set up two speed organizations

• Heritage organization

• Startup digital disruptive company

Running all at the same time.

Some companies must sacrifice the benefits of today to be prosperous in the future.

Digital Disruption & BeyondBehaviors propelling businesses - Millennials don't care about owning anything.

• The tendency of millennials to rent instead of buy is turning the retail industry upside down. The younger generation is increasingly "looking for less expensive alternatives to ownership.

• Battered by student loan debt and the Great Recession, Millennials place less emphasis on owning and more on sharing, bartering and trading to access coveted goods.

• These behaviors have propelled businesses such as car rental service Zipcar, taxi service Uber and home rental site Airbnb."

• And the trend is extending into clothing.(References: Business Insider Retail, Reuters Report, Retail Prophet)

Business World - Business models are changing.

• The new model is I don’t have to own everything.

• I rent, share, or purchase only what I need. I don’t know everything.

• I can partner.

• It is more important than ever for companies to listen to their customers and what they want.

• Examples: The Cloud, Knowledge and Talent Sharing, Niche Services

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe Digital Disruption Has Already Happened

• World’s largest taxi company owns no taxis (Uber)

• Largest accommodation provider owns no real estate (Airbnb)

• Largest phone companies own no telco infra (Skype, WeChat)

• Worlds most valuable retailer has no inventory (Alibaba)

• Most popular media owner creates no content (Facebook)

• Fastest growing banks have no actual money (SocietyOne)

• World’s largest movie house owns no cinemas (Netflix)

• Largest software vendors don’t write apps (Apple & Google)

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe world’s largest taxi company (Uber) owns no taxis

• Just a few years ago who would have thought we would pull out our phone to order unmarked cars with random strangers driving us from point A to point B.

• Despite local battles with city councils and taxi unions around the world, Uber’s estimated revenue in 2015 was $10 bn. Estimated worth is between $40 bn and $50 bn.

• If valued at $40 bn, that values Uber at 1.5 times the capitalization of Twitter and gives it the same capitalization of Salesforce.com, Delta Airlines and Kraft Foods.

• Company was founded in 2009. Over a billion people have used the service.

The world’s largest accommodation provider (Airbnb) owns no real estate

• Airbnb has taken the accommodation world by storm by enabling house and apartment owners to generate additional income by renting out their properties for nights and weekends.

• Valued at $25.5bn, Airbnb is estimated to be worth more than hotel giants Marriott ($20.90bn), Starwood ($14bn), and Wyndham ($10.01bn). Hilton Worldwide is valued at $27.7bn.

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe world’s most valuable retailer (Alibaba)

has no inventory

• Originally designed as a business-to business portal.

• Site now handles more than $170bn worth of sales.

• Company went public on New York Stock Exchange, it netted $25bn in the biggest IPO in history.

• Alibaba doesn’t have any retail premises nor does it carry any inventory, rather it simply facilitates the exchange of goods for money.

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe largest communications companies (Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber) own no infrastructure

• The most contentious battle yet in the telecoms space has to be the fact that while traditional fixed and mobile operators have invested in the underlying infrastructure to make broadband over computers and smartphones almost ubiquitous, the reality is consumers are using this infrastructure to make calls and send messages using services from Facebook, WhatsApp and others.

• Known as over-the-top (OTT) platform providers, services like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Skype are eating the lunch of telecoms providers all over the world who are struggling with the digital disruption that they laid the groundwork for.

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe most popular media platform (Facebook) creates no content

• Established in a Harvard University dorm by Mark Zuckerberg.• Creates no content. Encourages people to share content and drive

traffic.• Revenues of $4.5bn, with the majority of this ($3.4bn) coming from

mobile advertising.• Every day, more than 8bn people are watching videos on Facebook.• 700m using Facebook Messenger every month.• 400m people on Instagram each month.• Facebook doesn’t create content because you, dear reader, are the

product.

The fastest-growing banks actually have no money

• With the onset of services from Kickstarter (crowdfunding) to Apple Pay (mobile wallets) and society’s increasing use of e-commerce, the very notion of carrying cash is heading towards obsolescence.

• Rise of peer-to-peer lending.

• SocietyOne allow savvy investors to connect with credit-worthy borrowers in a way that is cheaper, faster and more efficient for digital natives.

Digital Disruption & BeyondThe world’s largest movie house (Netflix) owns no cinemas

• The old format of linear TV has been turned on its head by Netflix, which began as a postal DVD service and has developed into a fully-fledged streaming service with over 69.1m subscribers worldwide, including more than 43m in the US.

• This has led to a culture of binge-watching, where fans of popular movie series or boxsets watch one show after another. This is threatening the very foundations of the traditional TV business and cinemas.

Google, Facebook)

• In 2014 Apple revealed it had paid out $15bn to independent software makers and developers.

• App Store contained more than 1.2m apps.

• Apple economy is responsible for 629,000 jobs across Europe, including app developers and suppliers and people in retail.

• App revolution has added nearly 500,000 iOS jobs to the economy in Europe since the introduction of the App Store in 2008.

Concerns – Data UseAshley Madison hack changed its victims’ lives• In July 2015, a group calling itself "The Impact Team" stole the user data

of Ashley Madison, a commercial website billed as enabling extramarital affairs. The group copied personal information about the site's user base and threatened to release users' names and personally identifying information if Ashley Madison was not immediately shut down.

• the database of ruin emerges as companies combine their treasure troves of data to create one database so complex and colossal that it cannot ever be destroyed — a sort of Big Data Singularity. But as any member of Ashley Madison can tell you, databases of ruin have already arrived.

Nine Fears about The Future of Data & TechnologyEdelman and The University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre have carried out the largest study in history of public’s vs marketers’ perception of predictive data & technology.

1. Fears relating to privacy are consistent across age, gender, country and personality.

2. There is a deep lack of trust in data-driven businesses and in government. 71 percent of people thought most companies with access to their personal data did not use it ethically; only 26 percent of people trust the government not to sell their electoral roll and demographic data without their consent.

Nine Fears about The Future of Data & Technology3. Marketers are at serious risk of overestimating how comfortable

consumers are with predictive technology.

4. There’s a clear gap between how consumers want predictive technology to be used, and how it’s actually being used84 percent of people thought predictive tech should be used to improve the quality of healthcare and 47 percent of people thought it should be used to determine the price of their car insurance.

5. Yet Businesses are investing in smarter Big Data regardless77 percent thought their organization ought to invest in predictive data and 94 percent said it was important for them to understand the psychological attributes of their customers.

Nine Fears about The Future of Data & Technology6. Consumers’ fears, whilst universal, are nuanced

There is demand for personalized finance, yet distrust of actuarial prediction. The majority think predictive tech should not be used to assess mortgage eligibility or likelihood of default (62 percent and 67 percent respectively), but were open to its use for better account management and advice.

7. Overcoming peoples’ fears requires Privacy, Transparency & Relevance66 percent of people would prefer to see personalized advertising, assuming they have to see some advertising. Privacy, transparency and relevance are the building blocks of effective Big Data-based marketing.

Nine Fears about The Future of Data & Technology8. Beyond fear lies opportunity

‘Pay for Privacy’ is a real opportunity for traditionally data-dependent businesses. 27 percent would pay $3 a month to use Facebook without their behavior being recorded. Offering paid options helps remind consumers that their data has value, and that even if they use a service for free, they are still effectively paying for it.

9. Demand for secondary services from IoT data is soaring57 percent of people thought that e.g. smart fridge data should be used to recommend groceries to them when they go shopping; 58 percent would like to be automatically warned of unhealthy dietary habits.

Concerns – Security

Today’s security posture is not going to work for the future.

A new way of thinking about security from an architectural standpoint is needed.

Trust is key to enabling the future.

Imagine what could be done to you and your organization in similar attacks…?

“Nearly half of all cyberattacks are committed against small businesses…

As many as 80 percent of small to medium sized businesses don’t have data protection of email security in place...

Small businesses – who don’t train their employees on security risks –are susceptible to the Business Email Compromise Scam (BEC), which the FBI says has led to over $3 billion in losses.”

Finally – Unpredictability is hard to measure in predictive models.

2016 put a strain on predictive analytics• Tom Davenport, founder of the International Institute of Analytics,

based in Portland, Ore. States that "As we become more reliant on machine learning, coming to terms with changes in the world that affect our models will be very important. There may be a tendency to trust a model once it starts working, but it became apparent this year that social trends can change quickly. It's important for businesses to constantly interrogate their models and adjust assumptions upon which they are built“
