Welcome back to Term 4. I hope everyone is well
rested after the week’s break and is ready for the
next 10 weeks of hard work. Some great learning is
already happening in our classrooms with the CSWE
class studying the language of Weather and the FSK
class completing their speaking assessment at
Cristo Rei. Great to see our teachers designing real
life experiences for students to learn the content
and language skills.
During the week’s break, our teachers participated
in a study tour in Darwin. On our first day in Darwin,
we attended a Visible Learning workshop with
Jaylene Kellam-Stock and Lisa Foster and did some
work around the Visible Learner Characteristics,
Teacher Characteristics and Feedback. On
Thursday and Friday, we observed EAL teachers in
action at both primary and secondary schools and
visited of our sister schools. We will share more of
our learnings in future newsletter publications.
Thank you to all teaching staff members who
participated in the study tour. Already, I can see
the new learnings translating into classroom
practice.
To our SenaiNT students please make sure you are
seeking feedback from your teachers to discuss
progress with your learning goals and assessment
tasks. I also want to stress the importance of regular
attendance at school and arriving at school on
time at the beginning of each day and after each
school break. Every minute of your time in the
classroom makes a difference to your learning
progress, overall educational journey and future.

All about the Weather
Last week, our class started work on the “Weather” and practised measuring
the outside temperature using real thermometers. We are learning about the
weather because it is something we experience on a daily basis and it is
helpful to learn the language of weather to help us describe how it feels. We
also learnt about the four seasons and the names of the clothing items
associated with each of the seasons. This information might be helpful if we
do seasonal work in Australia.
Highest temperature,
cold and

Below are some photos of our class members practicing to use a thermometer
at different locations and in different conditions around our Centre.
Some of the
language we learnt
last week included:
The temperature is 45 0 c.
We are under the full sun.
It is hot and sunny.
The temperature is 280 C. We
are under a big old tree. It is
shady and breezy.
The temperature is 300 C. We are
under the verandah sitting on the
concrete floor. It is cool and shady.

This week, our FSK group participated in a real life learning experience at
Cristo Rei. Our students travelled by bus to Cristo Rei at Areia Branca
accompanied by six staff members to complete their speaking
assessment tasks. This assessment task involved students’ imagining that
they were a tour guide giving a simple explanation about the ‘Cristo Rei
Experience’ to a visitor. During their verbal explanation to the visitor,
students had to ensure that they used:
Correct words, grammar and pronunciation
Communication strategies to make sure the visitor understood
what they were saying
Nonverbal communication
In addition, students had to ask for feedback after they gave their explanation and talked to their
teachers about how their explanation could be improved. Our students had a lot of fun completing
this assessment activity and also, experiencing the tour first-hand by walking up to the top of the after
their explanation to view the statue of Cristo Rei themselves.
Make sure that you
have a hat as it is
hot as you climb.
There are 427 steps from the
bottom to the top of the steps.
Paulo Quefi (Teacher), Manuela Babo (Teacher), Gerio Patricio (Teaching Assistant)
The statue is 27 metres high.
It was unveiled by
President Suharto
on the 25 October,
1996.
It is made of copper.
It was given to the
people of TL as a gift
by the Indonesian government.

WE WELCOME VISITORS TO OUR CENTRE
On Friday 14 October, members of the Darwin/Dili Sister City
delegation and English students from SenaiNT participated in
a joint sister city/school art activity at Delta School. Our English
students supported the 132, Year 6 students to draw pictures of
crocodiles and funny faces. This art work will be shared with
Delta School’s sister school, Karama Primary. This art work will
also be featured in an upcoming art exhibition in Darwin. We
can’t wait to see it. Thank you to Ms Zoe Scrogings, Lynne Bigg
and Hannah Illingworth for visiting our Centre and spending
time with students from Delta School and SenaiNT.
Ms Joanne Forrest, a lecturer from Batchelor
Institute visited our Centre on Monday 10
October. Ms Joanne is holidaying in Timor
Leste and spent a few hours at the Centre
talking to our students and answering our
many questions. She also taught us to do
“Laughing Yoga” which was a lot of fun and
made us laugh a lot. Thank you Ms Forrest for
your visit.
Delta Students at work drawing crocodiles and funny faces. Ms Zoe also delivered the wonderful news that Rotary Australia will
