Many thanks are due to everyone who supported the Art and Craft exhibition in thevillage hall in March. We would like to thank the exhibitors, helpers with both settingup, taking down and manning the door and kitchen, cake bakers and both visitors andpurchasers.

We made a grand total of £500 for village hall funds and boosted the confidence ofour amateur local artists considerably with sales of their artwork. Thank you!

Saturday 15th April was the Annual Easter Egg Trail organised by F.O.S.M. and thePlaygroup. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for the Easter Bunny to set his trail ofclues around the village, ending up at the village hall where we had delicious cakes,refreshments, and an egg decorating competition as well as the usual raffle, tombolaand lucky dip.

There was a good turnout and the event raised a fantastic £544.75 for F.O.S.M. andPlaygroup. Thank you to all those who attended and all those who helped.

Dilwyn Weather for March 20173.3 inches (82mm) fell in March, which is a fairly average rainfallfigure. The year to date now stands at just over 8 inches (200mm).There were a few breezy days, making the daffodils dance but nomajor wind systems. Temperatures also stayed close to average and

there were the expected few light frosts at night. Daytime temperatures averaged 13degrees, night time averaged 3 degrees. Eleven days were ‘mostly’ sunny and on thebest of these temperatures crept up to 16 degrees, which makes for a pleasant springday! AR

The lovely sunshine of early April was just what we needed aftersome rather gloomy, cloudy winter months. Suddenly the vergesand field margins had flowers blooming, the trees and hedges tookon that delightful shade of green which we so look forward to, and

birds and insects took to the air ready for a new breeding season. Whilst a couple ofmy nest boxes see regular comings and goings(sparrows and blue tits), one of our nearneighbours has gone one better. The T.V. in his conservatory is linked to a nest boxout in the garden and shows a great tit who is now sitting on 6-7 eggs. Dave invitedme round for a look, and the picture is very good. He has followed the progress of thisnest, from building, to egg laying and currently to incubation. By the time thismagazine is distributed, there should be feeding of young under way. Perhaps it istime I tried to catch up with the advance of technology! We do have some nests – athrush well hidden amongst thick foliage and a pair of goldfinches in a tree in thegarden. Robins, blackbirds and chaffinches we are sure have nests nearby but so farwe have not seen them. Perhaps when they are feeding young we shall.

Sincere apologies are recorded here for the fact that, due to an incorrect submission ofcopy to the Editor, the report on the draft minutes for March were printed in the AprilDilwynner. It is very pleasing to report that a generous donation of £10,000 has been received bythe Parish Council, with a specification that the money is to be used exclusively for thebenefit and development of the Crown Inn, with effect from 4th April, 2017.

Pets’ CornerA Hereford & Worcester Animal Rescue Story

The arrival of Rufus in our lives came as a bit of a surprise. We had to have ourbeautiful Beagle, Honey put to sleep and somehow the sadness we felt wouldn’t goaway. Whenever anyone asked ‘Will you have another dog?’ the answer was alwaysa firm ‘No!’ Then out of the blue David confessed that he really missed having adog and could we consider having another one. Well it wasn’t an overnightdecision. We spent a lot of time online looking at dogs that were looking for newhomes, having had several rescue dogs over the years. We had seen pictures of thislong-legged dog, whose name at the time was Ivor, in the window of The Hereford& Worcester Animal Rescue Charity Shop in Leominster. He had lively brown eyesand a lovely, curly, russet coloured coat. On the spur of the moment, whilst outshopping, we called the Hereford & Worcester Animal Rescue phone number andasked if Ivor was still looking for a home. Luckily for us he was and we went to seehim that afternoon. We were told that he was about 5 or 6 year’s old but hecertainly seemed very lively and had a lot to say for himself! (And still does!)We decided not to take the decision that afternoon but I could see that David wassmitten and it was no surprise that when we got home, he said the thought that, inspite of not knowing much about Ivor’s background, he liked him a lot and what didI think? I too liked him and felt that he needed another chance. He had such abeautiful coat and long legs which he stretched out in a very elegant way! Howcould we say no? We picked him up the following week and decided that a namechange was in order. He became Rufus and has been with us for almost 9 months.He would only drink in the garden at first but is much more settled now andshowing more of his real character. To see him now asleep on his blankets, with hislong legs stretched out, gracefully arranged to fit his basket, with what looksremarkably like a smile on his face, is a reward in itself!A very big ‘thank you’ to Hereford & Worcester Animal Rescue for making itpossible for us to adopt our beautiful Rufus. ·Taurus Healthcare is a company that has been set up by the GPs in Herefordshire to provideadditional medical services to patients. There are now three primary care hubs (Leominster,Ross and Hereford) open in the county that provide GP and Practice Nursing services forour patients during the evenings and weekends. The hubs are staffed by local GPs andnurses, who will, with your permission, be able to access your medical records. If you needto make an appointment at one of the hubs but your surgery is closed, please phone 111 andask for an appointment at one of the hubs, alternatively you can ring direct on 0800 1217221. The Hereford hub is open 6pm to 8pm weekdays and 8am to 8pm weekends and bankholidays.

· There is a GP Walk-In Access Centre at ASDA in Hereford which is open from 8am until8pm, seven days a week and every day of the year. There is no need to register. You can usethese services when it is convenient and keep registered with your practice.

·You can telephone 111. NHS 111 is a new service to make it easier for you to access localNHS healthcare services in England. NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones. You should use the NHS 111 service if youurgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation.The NHS 111 service is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers, supported by experi-enced nurses and paramedics. They will ask you questions to assess your symptoms, thengive you the healthcare advice you need or direct you straightaway to the local service thatcan help you best.Where possible, the NHS 111 team will book you an appointment or transfer you directlyto the people you need to speak to. If NHS 111 advisers think you need an ambulance, theywill immediately arrange for one to be sent to you. Calls to 111 are recorded. All calls andthe records created are maintained securely, and will only be shared with others directlyinvolved with your care. This month we had our very own Dot Teather gave us a talk abouther time spent in Iran. When Jenny, Dot's daughter, was still very

young Steve got a job in Iran. He went on ahead of Dot but no sooner had Stevearrived than the revolution to overthrow the Shah took place. It was then a verydangerous place to be.

Dot did say that all the Iranians that they met were lovely people with just a fewcausing the problems. They were only out there for about 4 months and then theyhad to leave the country very quickly, becoming refugees! It was a very scary time,especially with a very young child to look after. They were flown to Turkey on aCanadian plane but then they had to find their own way home from there!!Dot remembers her time in the country with affection and says that it was a scary butamazing experience.

Next month is an open meeting, so all are welcome. We have Mary John's telling ushow her and her husband ended up adopting some animals on the island ofZakynthos in Greece. Tuesday 2nd May 7.30pm in Marion's studio, see you there.

Geoffrey’s ColumnThe equator passes through Ecuador, which is theSpanish for equator, a short taxi ride away fromQuito, the capital. Quito lies at 9,350 feet above sealevel and is the best preserved of all Spanishcolonial cities in S America, despite earthquakes.On the equator the Ecuadorians have set up a rathersplendid museum, with practical demonstrations.The first of these is a basin with plug hole. Thebasin is filled with water and a sprinkling of leaves

added. One metre to the North of “The Line” the water, and leaves, clearly drainanticlockwise. One metre to the South the water drains clockwise. On the equator thewater drains with no rotation. I was then asked to interlock my hands, standing to oneside of the line, whilst Hilary tried to push them down. She couldn’t. I then stood onthe equator and there was nothing I could do to stop her.A short distance from the actual Mitad del Mundo, or equator, is a monument towhere in earlier days the equator was thought to pass. Needless to say the experimentsdon’t work there at all. Some time after I was relating this story to an eminentorthopaedic surgeon, who poo pooed the whole idea and told me it was all the powerof suggestion. Dimitri did admit that he had never been to the equator. We have.Anyway next time you are idly watching the water drain from a basin, sink orwhatever – do note which way round it goes down.

Welcome to spring everyone, the flowers are showing theirheads and so far the weather is good, new managers in theCrown, so go and meet them; they are very welcoming.Thank you to everyone for your orders last month, we had atotal of 10,600 litres, a little lower than previous but a goodaverage again, so far this month we have had a steady flow oforders and they are still coming in. Beacon Fuels again picked

up the order for March, at a price of 36.9p per litre, the delivery was again prompt andcourteous, it is always a pleasure to deal with them and at the moment they are stayingcompetitive.The syndicate is working well and all members are I hope benefiting, an example ofthe benefit is, that last month there was a difference in price of 5.6p per litre from ourbulk buy to a single unit buy of 500 litres, a good saving. The price has fluctuatedquite a lot this last month with a drop to a low of £347 per 900 litres, this was on the29th March, it started at £355 on 21st March and has risen now to a high of £361 on14th April and is, at the moment, steady with no movement. (Donald Trump has nothelped the world market lately) I am constantly checking the price so let’s hope wehave a little dip in a few days’ time.Don’t forget Not The Dilwyn Show, try and make the most of the fun although not onthe scale of the real show.Thank you all for your orders again and keep smiling, it is very hard sometimes Iknow but we are all here for the duration however long it may be and never to return.
