OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Bishop John F. Doerfler

TEACHING THE FAITH The Fellowship of Catholic Scholars has made available to clergy a website feature periodic newsletters, free of charge. Each monthly installment of Teaching the Faith makes use of the scriptural readings for a given Sunday in order to provide clergy with assistance in preparing homilies on doctrinal topics, difficult and perhaps controversial subjects of current importance, and themes in Catholic prayer and spirituality. The website may be found at: https://www.catholicscholars.org/TTFlist.php WEEKLY WEEKEND MASS ATTENDANCE COUNTS Please continue to input your weekly weekend Mass attendance counts (for all Vigil and Sunday Masses combined) each week. The weekly Mass Attendance counts will give us a baseline for our Mass attendance as we work together to increase Mass attendance through evangelization efforts discussed in Bishop John’s Pastoral Letter on Evangelization, entitled: “Transforming Fire: A New Pentecost to form Spirit-Filled Evangelizers”. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of the Bishop at (906)-227-9115. RED FLAG REPORTING INSIGHTS Please take a moment to read the information below from Red Flag Reporting. While we strive for a safe work environment, we should remain alert! WORKPLACE VIOLENCE The Joint Commission recently identified numerous ways to address violence against health care workers. No matter what industry we work in, there are lessons for all of us:

1. Make sure you know the definition of workplace violence and your mechanisms for reporting incidents (9-1-1 for active issues). The importance of reporting all violence should not be understated.

For perspective, OSHA defines workplace violence as "any act or threat of

physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive

behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal

abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. It can affect and involve

employees, clients, customers and visitors."

2. Re-familiarize yourself with training on how to respond to emergency

situations.

3. While perhaps beyond the scope of a workplace initiative, be proactive and take self-defense training. Also, learn about de-escalation skills. Both may benefit you even outside of a work situation.

4. Take advantage of counseling should you be exposed to workplace

violence. Do not leave a wound untreated. While not something we want to think about, workplace violence is a reality. Taking proactive steps and speaking up when necessary will help to protect your

co-workers and you. If a situation is an emergency, call 9-1-1. If you have concerns about unethical or non-emergency unsafe behavior that does not require an immediate response, contact your management or us. We are here to help. Diocesan Day of Consecrated Life

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life

O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you.

Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who,

having found the pearl of great price,

treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayers of the Faithful  (Examples that could be used throughout the year.)

For those consecrated to God by the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience that they may seek to live

their baptismal promises more intensely and have the grace to persevere in their commitment to the

Lord and serve with open hearts and willing spirits. We pray to the Lord…

For those who have responded to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to be a consecrated person that they

may experience the support of the Church as they continue their growth in holiness. We pray to the

Lord…

For those consecrated to God by the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience that they may seek to live

their baptismal promises more intensely and have the grace to persevere in their commitment to the

Lord and serve with open hearts and willing spirits. We pray to the Lord…

For those who have responded to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to be a consecrated person that they

Lord…

We pray for those who are consecrated to God by the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. May

they always reveal the love of Christ to those they encounter and continue to enrich our world by their

dedicated lives of prayer. Lord hear us...

We pray for all those who are discerning their vocation in life, particularly those whom the Lord is calling

to consecrated life. May they be given the wisdom to hear God's call and the courage to respond

generously. Lord hear us...

For those who are called to the consecrated life, may they be faithful witnesses of God’s love. May

others be inspired to live their baptismal commitment by professing the vows of poverty, chastity, and

obedience. We pray to the Lord…

For all who actively support the promotion of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, that they

may see the fruit of their efforts in a rich harvest of vocations. We pray to the Lord…

That the life and mission of the men and women in consecrated life be a means of sanctification for

them and building up the kingdom of God. We pray to the Lord… For all pastors and parish priests of our

diocese, that they will recognize and invite those men and women being called to ordained and

consecrated lives to answer the call. We pray to the Lord…

For all involved in the examination of candidates to priesthood or to consecrated life, that their choices

will benefit the Church. We pray to the Lord…

That this be a time of grace and growth throughout the diocese, and that there will be a renewal of

interest in vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. We pray to the Lord…

That many young women will be open to Jesus’ call to consecrated life to serve the many needs of the

Church and of the world. We pray to the Lord…

For all men and women preparing for the priesthood or consecrated life, that their days of formation be

filled with joy, peace and the certainty of God’s love. We pray to the Lord…

DIOCESE OF MARQUETTE

USE OF VOTER GUIDES AT PARISHES (CIVIL LAW)

The Internal Revenue Code prohibits charitable organizations, including churches, from participating or intervening in political campaigns on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for political office. Permissible activities include distribution of unbiased voter guides. United States Catholic Conference guidance in deciding whether to distribute any voter guide, but particularly a guide created by another organization, is that the following questions must be answered affirmatively:

• Do the issues covered in the voter guide represent the range of issues of importance to the Church?

• Is the format and presentation of these issues designed to inform voters

rather than to inflame voters? • Does the guide accurately and fairly reflect candidates' views on these

complex issues? • Will readers of the guide obtain facts that will enhance their ability to

make informed choices in the voting booth? Churches that accept voter guides produced by other organizations must also accept the negative fallout in terms of parishioner complaint and potential Internal Revenue Service inquiry.
