Shutting Down Dropout Factories

A small set of high schools drives the nation’s dropout crisis.

In almost 2,000 high schools, 40 percent or more of the students do not graduate. In the middle schools feeding into these high schools, half of the students fall off the graduation path as early as sixth grade.

These schools currently are not designed to help kids off track succeed. They do not have enough resources.Source: Balfanz, R., Bridgeland, J. M., Moore, L. A., Fox, J. H., Enterprises, C., & Center, E. G. (2010). Diplomas Now Takes on Dropout Factories

Diplomas Now is a proven approach that helps the toughest middle and high schools in America’s largest cities ensure that students graduate ready for college or career.

It is the first fully integrated approach that improves a school’s curriculum and instruction while it provides the right students with the right support at the right time.

The Right Support at the Right Time

Page 4: Diplomas Now benefits students, their schools and communities

Early Identification

Diplomas Now is based on research showing that a sixth grader with even one of the following warning signs had a 75 percent chance of dropping out of high school: • Poor attendance• Poor behavior • Course failure in English or math

Future Dropouts Can Be Identified as Early as 6th Grade

Targeting the ABCs to Triple Graduation Rates

Diplomas Now focuses on the critical transition time of sixth to ninth grade.

The chances of sixth to ninth graders graduating from high school triple if we eliminate their early warning signs of poor attendance, poor behavior and course failure.

If we can get students safely to 10th grade, their likelihood of graduating increases from about 25 percent to 75 percent.

Page 6: Diplomas Now benefits students, their schools and communities

Focused Goals for Focused Results

We intend to reduce by two-thirds the number of middle school students sent to high school off-track in attendance, behavior, and course performance.

By reducing the number of off track students, we expect to see high schools that currently graduate only a fraction of their students achieve graduation rates of 80 percent or better.

Measuring Our Results

Diplomas Now:

Prevents students from falling off track in the first place.

Recovers off-track students and gets them back on track.

Defines overall success as the number of off-track students put back on track plus the number of students kept from falling off track.

What we’re learning from end of year results…

We are off to a good start, but there is still a lot of work to do on behalf of our schools and students.

Generally, middle schools had both higher prevention and recovery rates. The is important because research indicates that the earlier students get on track, the more likely they are to remain on track.

There is a high number of high school students who are starting the year off-track. This indicates the need to work towards 6-12 feeder patterns of DN schools to help increase the number of students starting high school on-track.

Many students go off-track at the end of the school year. This tells us that we need assertive, well-executed Finishing Strong plans to help students stay on track during the final marking periods of the school year is critical.
