Israel GalvánFla.co.men“As a dancer, Israel Galván is touched by the kind of genius that puts him into a category of his own. As a choreographer he’s equally remarkable”—The Guardian

Famed as “modern flamenco’s great rule breaker” (Daily Telegraph), acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer Israel Galván is an artist known for his flare and eccentricity, and for pushing the boundaries of flamenco tradition.

In Fla.co.men, Galván experiments with the form in a wildly energetic performance that nods to the likes of John Cage and Pina Bausch. Galván’s dancing fills the stage with its avant-garde spirit, riffing off of the equally talented musicians playing his musical accompaniments and their chosen instruments.

Presented in partnership with NYU Skirball and NYU’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center.

Spain’s rising star Patricia Guerrero, regarded as one of the most original dance-makers of her generation, is “taking flamenco into highly expressive new avenues” (The Times).

Technically exquisite and artistically expressive, Guerrero performs Proceso Eterno to live music with rapid footwork and exuberant, multi-rhythmic choreography, as she confronts the self-imposed fear of breaking social barriers.

Miguel PovedaIn Concert“The intensity of Poveda’s singing draws you in, even without a knowledge of Spanish” —Evening Standard

Considered a genius in his native Spain, superstar Miguel Poveda’s nuanced and soulful voice is unrivaled in the world of flamenco. He possesses a strong technique and a charming presence on stage making each of his concerts a unique musical event, “singing like no one you will have heard before” (Graham Watts).

Poveda takes the audience on a tour of the traditional musical forms of flamen-co, from the more cheerful malagueñas and alegrías to the more sorrowful seguirillas and soleás, all the while sharing his personal connection to the music with a spontaneity that ensures a completely exceptional performance. He will be accompanied on stage by four great artists: Jesús Guerrero (guitar), “El Londro” (voice and palmas), Paquito Gonzalez (percussion), as well as Gypsy dancer Antonio Molina “El Choro.”

Rocío Márquez feat. Miguel Ángel CortésSongs of Light“Rocío Márquez has invented an alternative flamenco: frank, rule-breaking and erudite” —Le Monde

Singer-songwriter Rocío Márquez is a rising star and one of the best voices in today’s flamenco scene. Her restless curiosity and captivating style combines a retro cool, modern elegance, and an impressive and passionate vocal delivery. She reclaims the concept of free song, as advocated by the dearly departed Enrique Morente, by merging tradition with the avant-garde.

Songs of Light is an open journey through different flamenco styles. She will be accompanied by her longtime collaborator Miguel Ángel Cortés, one of the most respected and acclaimed guitarists in recent decades. Their music belongs equally to the past and the future–always deep, always challenging but still accessible.

Rocío MolinaCaída del Cielo“One of the greatest flamenco dancers I have ever seen” —The New York Times

Triumphant, reckless, and lyrical, Caída del Cielo (Fallen from Heaven) is a celebration of the female body. Known for her technical virtuosity and conceptual daring, Rocío Molina is a formal visionary who reinvents classic aesthetics to prove flamenco is more alive than ever.

Molina’s show shakes up the traditional guitar, cajón, and clapping hands combination with a drum kit and electric guitar. Starting her journey wearing the bata de cola, the image of a bailaora, Molina draws on both the traditionally male movement and the animalistic mannerisms of the bullring as she explores gender, sex, and flamenco itself in a powerful celebration of womanhood.

María Pagés CompañíaAn Ode to Time“The leading innovator of modern flamenco lets her imagination soar” —The New York Times

Working with her longtime collaborator El Arbi El Harti, Pagés’s swift and incisive choreography draws from a variety of flamenco styles, weaving her art form with a multitude of texts, images, and movement languages referencing Stravinsky, Picasso, Fosse, Borges, and Plato.

An Ode to Time transcends the traditional staging of flamenco with its changing nature and diverse forms. Rapidly developing choreographic structures appear and disappear, following each other, almost like the rhythm of a slide projector. Set to original music–with vocals accompanying violin, cello, and Spanish guitar–the piece provides an artistic reflection on the relentless pass-ing of time and its effects on the body, desire, art, and life.

Compañía Manuel Liñán¡VIVA!“This is the kind of flamenco everyone should see” —The Arts Desk

A generous and seductive performer of dizzying power, Manuel Liñán has long been praised for the showmanship and sincerity with which he breaks the rules of flamenco. ¡VIVA! features male dancers clad in traditionally female costumes, exposing the many identity expressions alive within every human body.

¡VIVA! is a song to the freedom of movement, where the feminine is embraced from the masculine body, and where gender roles, in a codified world like flamenco, are broken with joy.

Mercedes Ruiz, Eduardo Guerrero, María Moreno & María Terremoto Special Guest Artist: La ChanaGala de Andalucía“A fistful of Spain’s greatest dancers colluding in a foot-stomping, shawl-swirling, castanet-clicking party” —The Stage

Gala Flamenca–this year titled Gala de Andalucía to pay special homage to the birthplace of flamenco–has long been the centerpiece of Flamenco Festival. In honor of Flamenco Festival’s 20th Anniversary, this year’s very special Gala presentation features Eduardo Guerrero, known for his “marvelously eccentric solos” (The New York Times); María Moreno whose astonishing dance pays tribute to the traditional style of Cádiz; Mercedes Ruiz, lauded for her “commanding truth and virtuosity” (Financial Times); and rising singer Maria Terremoto, the youngest artist ever to receive the Giraldillo Award for New Artist at the Seville Flamenco Biennial. These remarkable artists are joined on stage by a cadre of musicians and a special guest artist: La Chana, a legend from the 1960s-80s who vanished from the public eye at the height of her career.

Leonor Leal& Niño de Elche

Leonor Leal: No Singing AllowedDancer and choreographer Leonor Leal likes to move outside flamenco. She has made a name for herself as a versatile and inquisitive flamenco dance-maker who likes to push her limits. In this performance, she goes in search of a new choreographic language and sound space with the help of the exceptional percussionist Antonio Moreno.

Niño de Elche: ColombianaNiño de Elche is considered by many critics to be one of the most influential innovators in the flamenco genre. A young multi-disciplinary artist, he infuses his traditional flamenco singing with contemporary music and media. In his latest project, Colombiana, he explores the fluid connection between Spanish flamenco rhythms such as the guajira and milonga, and the music of the Afro-Andalusian Caribbean–not focusing on the past, but looking forward to what’s next for flamenco.

Flamenco Eñe:Kiki Morente Albayzín

Vocalist Kiki Morente, from a renowned musical family, performs songs from his first solo album, Albayzín, a homage in many ways to his father, Enrique Morente. The name Albayzín refers to the historic Gypsy neighborhood of Grana-da, the Morente family’s home. In this intensely personal musical exploration, Kiki shows his work to be steeped in classical tradition, but also full of bold contem-porary innovation–much like the city of Granada itself.

Jonatan Miró, Miguel Heredia & Hugo LópezTablao Queer

Flamenco appears as a timeless art form set in its various forms–for example, the elaborate bata de cola dress for women and tight black pants for men. Yet its traditions are based on innovation. In this revelatory program, Jonatan Miro, Miguel Heredia, and Hugo Lopez, who have been touring as part of Compañía Manuel Liñán, stomp out flamenco stereotypes and explore gender identities while breaking with codes and regulations. This intimate dance performance with live musical accompaniment, takes us back to a Spanish tablao. Similar to cabaret spaces, these clubs sprang up in the 1960s throughout Spain, replacing the cafés cantantes.

Flamenco Festival Closing Party

Los VolubleFlamenco Is Not a Crime

Inspired by the “free party is not a crime” movement, Los Voluble–the duo formed by Pedro and Benito Jimenez–re-contextualizes flamenco directly within the recent history of dance music, blending in references from footwork, grime, gqom, dub, reggaeton, and more. In this exciting project, flamenco and electronica intersect with cultural critique and a political video remix.

Come and dance with us.

Leonor Leal Conferencia Escénica:¡Ahora Bailo Yo!Acclaimed dancer-choreographer Leonor Leal presents a lecture demonstration based on the unfinished 1976 film Camelamos naquerar, with choreography by the legendary Mario Maya and texts by poet and writer Jose Heredia Maya, the first Gypsy to become a university professor. Camelamos naquerar, which translates as “we want to talk” in the Gypsy caló language,” was the first work that called for Gypsy rights after years of persecution. Through dance and word, Leonor’s reinterpretation of this groundbreaking work asks new questions about flamenco. The presentation includes projections of the film.
