Annual Washington Trip Well Attended

With more than 150 representatives from the Decatur-Morgan County Cham-ber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison Coun-ty in attendance, the 2011 Chamber trip to Washington, D.C. was once again one of the largest Chamber-led delegations in the United States.

The annual visit gives Chamber members an opportunity to spend time with our senators and congressmen, as well as hear from guest speakers during group sessions and panel discussions. In ad-dition to dinner receptions with Senators Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby and Congressmen Mo Brooks and Robert Aderholt, attendees spent time hearing from a host of others, including Con-gressman Eric Cantor (R-Va.), and Sena-tors Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Panel discussions ranged in topic from BioTechnology to Early Childhood Educa-tion to Health Care Reform. Monday’s luncheon hosted guest speaker William A. Niskanen, chairman emeritus and a

distinguished senior economist at the Cato Institute. Between 1985 and 2008, Niskanen was the chairman of the Cato Institute following service as a mem-ber and acting chairman of President Reagan’s Council of Economic Affairs. The delegation’s visit concluded with a luncheon with a keynote address given by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), during which representatives from both Chambers of Commerce presented our elected officials with the 2011 Fed-eral Public Policy Agendas. Since enter-ing Congress, Cantor has earned a repu-tation as a consensus-builder respected on both sides of the aisle. Member Spotlight

Decatur General is the only not-for profit commu-nity hospital in Morgan County, and is an

affiliate of Huntsville Hospital. The hospital was opened by The Ladies of the Benevolent Society in 1915. Today, Decatur General is a gen-eral acute care hospital licensed for 273 beds with a 64-bed behavioral medi-cine hospital making it

one of the largest employ-ers in Morgan County.

Decatur General is accredited by the Joint Commission, and

its medical staff consists of more than 200 physi-

cians representing 20 specialties.

Behavioral Medicine: Decatur General West offers confidential inpatient psychiatric programs for ado-lescents, adults and geriatric patients. Our safe, structured programs focus on patients who can best be served in a short-term to medium length of stay setting.

Emergency: The Decatur General Emergency Department is a fully equipped, modern facility staffed 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week by physicians and nurses experienced in all areas of emergency care, including cardiac, trauma and pediatric medicine. During the month of April 2011 the emer-gency staff treated 3,333 patients with an average “door to doctor” time of 33.41 minutes.

Cancer: Decatur General currently offers the only Radiation Oncology Center in Morgan County. We provide patients and their families a broad spectrum of care - from diagnosis and treatment through rehabilitation, ongoing emotional sup-port and recovery. Our Oncology Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and was recently re-accredited with commendation.

Stroke: Decatur General is one of only 2 certified Primary Stroke Centers in Alabama and the only one in Morgan County. Decatur General received the Gold Plus Achievement Award for 2010 from the American Heart/American Stroke Association for consistent performance in stroke quality core measures.

Heart: Decatur General is the only Certified Chest Pain Center with a Diagnostic Cardiac Cath Lab in Morgan County. We have been awarded a Certificate of Need from the state to provide interventional cardiology without on-site cardiovascu-lar surgery.

Surgery: Decatur General has 11 state-of- the art surgical suites and a surgery staff with unmatched experience. The surgeons at Decatur General perform surgery both on an inpatient and outpatient basis and have achieved Exemplary

Status for low incidence of surgical site infections.

Decatur General was one of a select few hospitals chosen by the American College of Surgeons to participate in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) High 5’s Project trialing new protocols to address patient safety issues.

Decatur General is one of two hospitals in the state and the ONLY hospital in North Alabama to voluntarily participate in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, a program designed to measure and improve surgical outcomes. Decatur General was one of five hospitals in the United States selected to present best practice guidelines at the 2009 and 2010 NSQIP national conferences.

Imaging: Decatur General offers the latest technology in imaging including Digital Mammography, 4-D Ultrasound, Open Bore MRI, Nuclear Medicine, PACS image archiving and retrieval systems, Cardiac Scoring and is the only completely digital Imaging Department in Morgan County.

Sleep: We offer the largest fully accredited Sleep Disorders Center in Morgan County. Our board certified sleep physicians and staff are licensed to evaluate adult and pediatric patients for sleep related disorders.

Women and Children: The experienced staff at the Women and Children’s Center at Decatur General has been delivering babies in the Tennessee Valley for more than 85 years. The OB/GYN physicians at Monarch Women’s Health, our Labor and Delivery and Pediatric Staff offer comprehensive in-patient care including labor/delivery, surgical procedures and recov-ery plus a full range of health education classes and support groups for women.

Physical Therapy: Decatur General’s RehabAccess offers physical, occupational, industrial and sports therapy from licensed therapists. The goal at RehabAccess is to provide a customized rehabilitation plan to help restore a person’s abil-ity to function at home, at work, or on the playing field.

Reference Lab: Decatur General offers full reference lab services with three convenient locations and on-site services at assisted living facilities. The lab is accredited by the American College of Pathologists and backed by the resourc-es of the Mayo Clinic.

Decatur General has an extensive community outreach pro-gram that includes screenings, health fairs and community education. We have recently made several improvements to our facility and equipment including new elevators, new cameras in Nuclear Medicine, an upgrade to the infant secu-rity system, new orthopedic equipment in Surgery, new lights in the OR, new monitors in ICU/CCU and the Emergency Department, hardware for electronic medical records and more. We are proud of the service and care that we have been privileged to provide the community for over 95 years and look forward to continuing that tradition.

Commodore of the QuarterEach quarter, an outstanding Commodore earns the Commodore of the Quarter award as a dedicated member who serves above and beyond our expectations. 2011/2012 CommodoresThe Chamber is proud to announce the following local professionals who were chosen to represent their businesses and serve as part of our Commodore program:

Two years ago the Decatur- Morgan County Chamber of Commerce initiated a program called One Vision. One Voice. One Morgan County. The goal of this program is to build a better communi-ty. It is not the traditional Chamber of Commerce Program of Work but is, in fact, on the cutting edge of community development. It is a model that has been recognized Statewide and Nation-ally. As an example, we have become the lead organization in a Statewide effort to create Pre- K across Alabama and have been asked to present the One Vision program to the American Chamber Executives Association in Mil-waukee last August.

During our 2011 Small Business Awards Celebration, attendees got a glimpse of four of the five initiatives that make up the One Morgan County initiative- Education, Healthcare, Lead-ership Development and Keeping our Best and Brightest. This event has pre-viously been held as a breakfast, but by moving the Small Business Awards program to a dinner event and adding two new awards, the Chamber is em-phasizing our intention to keep our Best and Brightest, recognize our outstand-ing local talent, and bring attention to two outstanding community leaders by naming these awards in their honor.

One of the new awards given this year was the Arthur Orr Young Pro-fessional of the Year award, named for Senator Arthur Orr who has ex-celled in his profession, assuming numerous leadership roles within the community at a very young age. The 2011 Arthur Orr Young Profes-sional of the Year winner was Jeremy Nails, President and CEO of Morgan

County Economic Development Asso-ciation and Morgan County Port Author-ity. Nails is an economic development professional that is respected across the state for his commitment to creat-ing jobs and enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Morgan County. In a nomination written by his staff, Nails is referred to as a forward-thinker, col-laborator, community man and people person.

The second award presented during this year’s event was the 2011 Lynn C. Fowler Non-Profit Profes-sional of the Year, named for former Decatur Mayor Lynn Fowler, who has become a symbol of volunteer lead-ership in the community. The 2011 Lynn C. Fowler Non-Profit Professional of the Year recipient was Caro-lyn Dobson, CEO of Hospice of the Valley, the only not-for-profit provider of end of life care serving Morgan and Lawrence counties. Dobson has worked tirelessly for over two decades to ensure that people who are terminally ill live their life to the fullest until their life is over. As a nonprofit organization, HOTV provides care regardless of income or ability to pay. Dob-son and the Board of Direc-tors formed a foundation to ensure those who have no insurance or who cannot af-ford to pay for services will not go without care.

son of the Year is Tom Counts of 3-GIS. Counts has over twenty-five years of experience and education in product development, project management and organizational operations management, having been involved with large and small software development projects for various customers and for the past 15 years has focused on the Utility and Telecommunications industries. He has been fortunate to establish a long-standing relationship with ESRI and is utilizing his entrepreneurial spirit to cre-ate the third-generation in GIS solutions for the asset management industries.

As President and Chief Executive Offi-cer of 3-GIS, Counts has helped create and launch the company from its first day of inception. He is responsible for all aspects of the organization with a focus on sales, marketing, and inter-national channel development. The Lunch & Learn: Uniting Talent with Opportunity event held on April 27 was attended by more than 100 people de-spite inclement weather. M&D Mechanical Awarded $5.9 Million Contract for Stennis Space Center Test Stand Project

Decatur, Ala – Decatur, Alabama-based M&D Mechanical Contractors has been awarded a $5,915,932 con-tract by NASA for the A-3 Altitude Test Stand being constructed at the John C. Stennis Space Center in south Mississippi. M&D received a one-year contract for the fire suppression and detection system for the stand, one of several task contracts that the com-pany has received for the test stand project.

The new contract is part of a five-year long-term contract M&D Mechanical Contractors has with NASA for the test stand project. The initial long-term contract was awarded in early 2010. The first task of the long-term contract was awarded for $6,038,000 and consisted of M&D Mechanical Contractors fabricating and delivering steam piping and industrial water pip-ing for use on the test stand. This task had an extremely tight deadline and was completed on time in October 2010. The company is now installing the piping into the test stand as part of a $3.2 million contract with NASA and is halfway through the project. M&D Mechanical Contractors is also install-ing the industrial water pump system for the test stand, a contract that was awarded for $450,000.

The A-3 Altitude Test Stand will enable NASA to test very large cryogenic pro-pellant rocket engines at simulated alti-tudes of up to 100,000 feet, matching conditions of an engine firing in space. It is the first test stand to be built at Stennis Space Center since the 1960s and will allow NASA, for the first time, to be able to conduct full-duration tests on full-scale engines at the correct simulated altitudes. The test stand is being constructed specifically for the testing of the J-2X engine for the Ares launch vehicles.

Morgan County’s Expanding Industry Investment

Based on our 2010 calendar year numbers, the Alabama Development Office has ranked Morgan County #2 in the state for expanding investment with $203,283,240 and #3 for overall investment.

Morgan County’s expanding numbers so far for fiscal year 2010-2011 total $169,100,000, which is more than the total invested in MCEDA’s fiscal year 2009-2010.

Since October 2010, the start of our fiscal year, there have been seven non-confidential expansions announced. In October, General Electric invested $43 million while adding 20 jobs to create a center of excellence for top-freezers and “green” manufacturing and invested another $16 million to transition to a new product insulation process. In December 2010, Ascend Performance Materials added machinery and equipment to produce more of the intermediate precursor for the nylon they manufacture, investing $6.5 million; Bunge North America

invested $85 million to expand their refinery facilities to include palm oil and cotton seed and to improve their packaging facilities for their customers, adding 45 new jobs; and INEOS invested $5.5 million on a project to help reduce the residual monomer level in its products, helping address safety concerns and making it more competitive. Nucor Steel announced in February that they would be adding an $8.5 million high pressure water system to its hot strip mill and in March, Sonoco Products-Wood Reels announced they would be creating 28 jobs and investing $4.6 million by adding 7,000 square feet to make wooden plugs that go in the end of paper cores.

With the economic downturn behind us, we’re moving forward and hopefully this is a sign of what’s to come for Morgan County!

Decatur City Schools recently named the 2010-2011 Middle School Technology Award winners. The win-ners were presented their awards dur-ing their schools’ awards day. Venessa Edmonds of the Decatur Career Center presented the award for Brookhaven Middle School to Michael Bellman. Dr. Charles Elliott presented the award for Cedar Ridge Middle School to Cooper Wright. Kathy Vinson of GE presented the award for Oak Park Middle School to Harley Moore. Congratulations to this year’s Technology Award winners.
