THE VICTOR ANGELOSANTE AWARD NOMINATION FORM

DESCRIPTION OF AWARD The Victor Angelosante Award is named in honour of Mr. Victor Angelosante, a former Health and Physical Education Program Coordinator for the Toronto Catholic District School Board, school administrator, teacher, coach and Toronto Catholic Schools Athletic Association (TCSAA) executive member who died in 1994. Victor Angelosante recognized early in his career that school athletics possessed enormous potential to build Christian fellowship in the hearts and minds of young people in our schools. He further recognized and demonstrated that athletics was one of many critical avenues educators could pursue to foster in children a sense of respect and confidence, an understanding of commitment, the significance of teamwork, and the desire to dedicate energy toward the pursuit of excellence. The Victor Angelosante Award is presented annually to a TCDSB elementary employee who, through significant involvement with athletics and the TCSAA, has made an outstanding contribution toward the overall development and education of young people. The award winner is one who personifies those qualities Victor demonstrated in abundance and one who embodies and inculcates by example the highest traditions of a Catholic educator and a dedicated sportsperson. SELECTION PROCESS 1. Principals, teachers or other TCDSB staff may forward the name of a nominee to the TCSAA executive no

later than Friday January 23, 2009. Please submit these forms and a letter of recommendation (typewritten please) to Larry Lazazzera, Our Lady of Lourdes ([email protected]).

2. The TCSAA executive and the Health & Physical Education Department staff will select the annual award winner at a meeting scheduled for January 27, 2009.

EDUCATION: Students fill big shoes at UN simulation By CYNTHIA REASON November 20, 2008 4:13 PM www.insidetoronto.com (North York Mirror) More than 600 high school students from across the city put their diplomacy skills to good use this week as they drafted resolutions, plotted strategy, and negotiated with adversaries to resolve conflicts at the 2008 Catholic Students United Nations Assembly (CSUNA). On Wednesday, the first full day of debate of the three-day UN simulation, professionally-dressed and articulate students from across the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) infiltrated every available meeting room at the Catholic Education Centre to sit down and peacefully resolve some of the global community's most pressing issues and conflicts. Every member state of the UN was assigned a student delegation, who were then tasked with the responsibility to debate that country's best interests in the various committees of the UN, according to their assigned country's foreign policies. Led by Co-Secretary Generals Claire Danukarjanto and Margaret Suen, both 17-year-old senior students at host school St. Joseph Morrow Park, the 300-delegate-strong general assembly tackled issues as varied as the promotion of gender equality, the elimination of HIV/AIDS, nuclear disarmament, global warming, and in one of their longest debates, the abolishment of child labour. After more than an hour of heated rebuttals, students ultimately voted down a resolution to the latter based on the grounds that, in developing countries, families need every member of their households to chip in just to survive - including children. The Bishop Allen Academy delegation representing Kenya argued that abolishment would be fruitless: "Children would still have to work; there's no way out of it. Kids would just have to go underground, to work under even worse conditions. By abolishing, you're not solving the problem, you're exacerbating it." To many in the committee, including Karen Luong, a 17-year-old student from Msgr. Percy Johnson representing the African nation of Djbouti, the end result was a surprising and enlightening one. "It's interesting to see the different points of view debated, because there's not just one opinion, there's many," the first-time delegate said. "At first, I thought everyone would vote to abolish child labour, but instead we resolved to improve working standards for those children. It was a good solution." While the general assembly moved on to address the situation in Darfur, the 75-member economic and social committee was deeply engrossed in a best-practice discussion for the delivery of universal primary education, while the 25 delegates belonging to the commission on sustainable development wrapped up a genetically modified food debate, and the 15 members of the security council made a decision whether or not to invade Iraq. Aside from the lofty issues discussed, the well-organized event was all the more impressive given it was a totally student-driven initiative, said St. Joseph Morrow teacher advisor Nancy Burrows. "It was an enormous undertaking on the students' part," she said, noting that student organizers devoted two evenings a week since September to plan the event. "All too often we read bad things are happening at schools in the news - this is very positive.

"St. Joe's has been running this for the last 14 years, and as an all-girls school, it just goes to show that the leaders of tomorrow will be women." Co-Secretary Generals Danukarjanto and Suen, would be counted among them, Burrows noted. Both have participated in CSUNA since Grade 9, working their way up from delegate, to committee chair, to ultimately running the show this year. For Suen, who hopes to pursue an education in social justice and international relations when she graduates this year, the experience has been a rewarding one. "Just feeling the passion of the delegates fill the room, it's truly inspirational," she said.

Don Bosco Community Remembers November 11, 2008 marked the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I, a war that cost the lives of over 60,000 Canadians. Thousands and thousands more were wounded or disfigured. Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, as they do every year, commemorated that important anniversary with an assembly, featuring student poems and readings, and a very special address by Ms. Vanda Greto (History Dept., Don Bosco), on the importance of remembering for students today. That was followed by two singing performances led by music teacher Mr Henry Urbanowicz. Traditionally, part of each Remembrance Day Service is the Act of Remembrance and it is the same no matter where a service of Remembrance is held in Canada or where Canadian soldiers serve in the world. It entails the placing of a wreath at the foot of the cross, a silence and a musical interlude with bugle and bagpipes. The bugler is the first to sound the "Last Post". (this is not to be confused with "Taps"). It is a haunting melody and it has been played at the burials of Canada's war dead for over 100 years. It has most recently been played at the funerals of the Canadians killed in Afghanistan. A lament on the bagpipes follows. Bagpipes from the very earliest times have always been considered an instrument of war. Even today, Canadian forces in Afghanistan have pipers. Two minutes of silence gives way to the second bugle call, the "Rouse" or the reawakening, for those of us

who are left to carry on. Bugles were very important in the front lines during World War I as they could be heard above the sounds of battle. Different calls instructed the men to advance or withdraw. Next year Don Bosco staff and students will once again gather on November 11 to remember. Lest we forget L – R: Suzanne Ricard, student teacher History Dept; William Magee, American Silver Star and Bronze Star, First Special Service Force; Vanda Greto History Teacher Don Bosco and Tim Stewart History Teacher Don Bosco.

SUBJECT: 11-8 Loretto College Hosts “Inner City Peace Walk” On November 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm. , Loretto College’s Empowered Students Partnership committee hosted an “Inner City Peace Walk”. The walk coincided with National Bullying Awareness Week. The school invited elementary female students from seven of our neighbourhood schools. The following TCDSB participated and shared in the positive school spirit and morale: Stella Maris, St. Nicholas of Bari, St. Clare, St. Raymond, St. Rita, Our Lady of Assumption and Senhor Santo Cristo Catholic Schools. The goal was to continue to educate female students in the elementary and secondary panel about female bullying and cyber-bullying all on the same day and time. Approximately 400 students from Loretto College and elementary schools participated in this years walk.

Now you see me, now you don’t! The struggle to fit in, what clothes to wear and what friends to keep, is a battle for many of our students. While much of this is part of “growing up”, some students experience difficulty, which may become an obsession. Sheena’s Place is an agency that offers support, helps treat and restore the confidence and courage needed to live healthy and independently. On November 21st 2008 the Beatrice Campus of Dante Alighieri Academy had the privilege of hosting a presentation by Ms Amelia Perri. Using her own experience as the backdrop, Ms. Perri informed the students of the dangers of eating disorders. She highlighted symptoms that can lead to eating disorders and emphasized that both boys and girls could be at risk. The presentation was informative and realistic. Students are sure to benefit from her frank discussion about the dangers of trying to fit it.
