PREFACE

This document provides a brief summary of the experience and areas of expertise of Consultancies which are, or form part of, Member Companies. In particular, it lists expertise relating to corrosion in marine or wet environments. A questionnaire/template was sent to each company, and the directory has been compiled from returned questionnaires, using the information supplied by the companies. More details can be obtained by contacting the consultancies directly. Information included in the appendix can also be found on the Marine Corrosion Forum website (www.marinecorrosionforum.org), and the booklet will also be available in pdf format.

Copper Development Association 5 Grovelands Business Centre, Boundary Way

Website: www.copperinfo.co.uk

About CDA Copper Development Association (CDA) is part of a global network of 28 Copper Centres, with headquarters in New York (International Copper Association, Ltd) and a regional office in Brussels (European Copper Institute). CDA's remit is to promote and support the correct and efficient use of copper and copper alloys for all major applications through the provision of information, literature, software and training to material specifiers, designers, engineers, architects, consultants and contractors. CDA maintains links with academic institutions, industry, professional bodies and other Copper Centres around the world. CDA provides educational resources for secondary schools through its role as a content provider for the Association for Science Education's Schoolscience website www.schoolscience.co.uk.

CDA was established in 1933 and is funded by the copper industry.

Copper alloys in marine environments

Copper, the most noble of the metals in common use, has excellent resistance to corrosion in the atmosphere and in fresh water. In sea-water, the copper nickel alloys have superior resistance to corrosion coupled with excellent anti-fouling properties. Copper cladding of wooden hulled warships, introduced by the Royal Navy in the 18th century to prevent damage by wood-boring insects and worms such as the teredo, was discovered to prevent biofouling by weed and molluscs. This meant that ships could stay at sea for long periods without cleaning. Nelson's successful blockade tactics and subsequent victory at Trafalgar was partly due to the superior speed of his clean-hulled ship. The addition of nickel to copper improves its strength and durability and also the resistance to corrosion, erosion and cavitation in all natural waters including sea-water and brackish, treated or polluted waters. The alloys also show excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. The added advantage of resistance to bio-fouling, gives a material ideal for application in marine and chemical environments for ship and boat hulls, desalination plant, heat exchange equipment, sea-water and hydraulic pipelines, oil rigs and platforms, fish farming cages, sea-water intake screens, offshore renewables etc.

Free in-house technical seminars ‘Copper-Nickel in Marine Environments’ Copper-nickel alloys have a unique combination of biofouling and corrosion resistance in seawater environments. These presentations will provide you with the latest technical information on the properties, corrosion behaviour and resistance to biofouling of wrought 90-10 and 70-30 copper-nickel alloys and details of their use in marine applications. They will also provide guidelines for selection, fabrication, commissioning and operational practices.

Attendees will gain: - 1-2 hours quality CPD - An understanding of the biofouling and corrosion resistance of copper-nickels and

copper base alloys. - An awareness of the scope of copper alloy marine applications - An understanding of design, fabrication and commissioning issues for long

service life - A free literature pack covering design, properties and applications.

The seminars are suitable for anyone involved in the design, specification, fabrication and operation of materials in contact with seawater and the marine environment in the following sectors/applications:

Defence Shipbuilding and repair Offshore Marine related industries Energy Pressure systems Heat exchangers Hydraulic/pneumatic systems Offshore renewables

Copper-Nickel Task Group

Copper Development Association is on the steering committee of the Copper Nickel Task Group, a global body of industry specialists in the use of copper alloys for marine applications. This group produces peer-reviewed information on copper-nickel with data which will allow good practices in design, fabrication and application which can be found on the Copper-Nickel Website www.copper-nickel.org.

Facilities and servicesThe laboratory has an extensive range of research facilities which enable us to offer the following services.

Damage investigationWe have considerable practical experience in investigating failures in engineering structures, pressure equipment and many other components in both metallic and non-metallic materials. All of our damage investigations are carried out in great depth to a very high standard and are followed up with clear, concise reports. Metallurgical testing We can test all forms of steel and alloys in accordance with national and international standards, or to your own specifications, to establish their physical, chemical and corrosion properties. Our analysis includes tests to determine properties such as: • tensile and fatigue strength • V-notch impact toughness• fracture toughness

• corrosion resistance • hardness and surface

texture • chemical composition. Composite testing We can carry out tests on glass fibre, aramid and carbon composite reinforcements to determine their physical properties, in accordance with recognised standards. Our tests can determine properties such as:

• tensile and compressive strength

• flexural properties • creep properties • water absorption

characteristics. We also have facilities which enable us to test elastomers, wood, ceramics and plastics.

Fracture analysis Using high-resolution optical and scanning electron microscopes,

we can examine fracture surfaces to determine fracture mechanisms and initiation sites. We also have an energy dispersive X-ray micro analyser, which we can use to determine material and corrosion constituents and generate element distribution maps to assist in establishing failure mechanisms. On-site examination We also offer a number of on-site examination services including: • defect detection • photography • metallographic replication

of microstructures • hardness testing.

The laboratory is staffed by a team of qualified, highly experienced metallurgists and composite materials specialists, all of whom have demonstrated their ability to carry out investigations to the most exacting of standards.
