Anti stereotypes meaning

• Counter-stereotype, reverse stereotype, or anti-stereotype is the reverse of a stereotype. Although counter-stereotypes arise in opposition to stereotypes, they may eventually become stereotypes themselves if they are too popular.

What do we expect from people with disability's?

• People often stereotype people with disability's as dumb.• Also they are considered to look and act different to other

people.• All of these stereotypes come from the media, since in

real life not all people with disability's match this description, these people are called anti stereotypes.

Who are some famous anti stereotypes with disability's?

Stephen Hawking has a disability called ALS It means that he is unable to move on his own. However he is one of the smartest people in the world which defies many stereotypes.

Mike Kenny is a famous Paralympian swimmer he won 16 gold medals 2 silvers 4 bronzes. This shows that physically disabled people are just as capable as able non physically disabled people.

Fake media Disability

How are people with a disability represented on the TV

• There are lots of comedies where people with disabilities are made fun of for how they act or how they talk.

• In films they make the people with disabilities shown stereotypically (how they walk or how they talk).

• In the film the Theory Of Everything it is about Steven Hawking and how even if you’re disabled you can still make anything you want to do and can still be successful.

Stereotypes

Stereotypically, disabled people are expected to look disabled, for example… Physical deformities.

Also, they are expected to be less able to do things.

They are thought to struggle with simple tasks and to be less clever than people without a disability.

They aren't considered equal to people without disabilities and aren't seen as normal.

Overall, they are seen as different to ‘normal’ people.

Stereotypes

Sarah Storey

• Storey was born without a functioning left hand after her arm became entangled in the umbilical cord in the womb.

• Storey's list of major achievements also include being a 21-time World champion (6 in swimming and 15 in cycling), a 21-time European champion (18 in swimming and 3 in cycling) and holding 72 world records.

Disability:When we think of disability we so often think of wheelchairs (understandable when you consider the disability symbol that is used absolutely everywhere), yet only 5% of disabled people actually use a wheelchair. There are a lot of disabilities that exist to humans the two main types of disabilities are mental and physical.
