What Will You Learn? In this PowerPoint, you will learn the following things:
• The catastrophes that can happen near where you live• The catastrophes that can happen in a place far different from where you live• What methods can be used to prevent huge loss of life if these catastrophes
happen

Let’s start with Minneapolis
The following common natural disasters can happen in this area:
• Tornadoes• Floods• Thunderstorms
![Page 4: Disaster Comparison By Mihir Reddy](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062305/56816253550346895dd29c63/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Tornadoes: an overview
Tornadoes are actually clouds which touch the ground. Here’s an example:

How They Form

What Teqniques Can Be Used To Be Safe
1. Designate a place in your house where your family will gather in the event of a tornado. Underground is best, in a basement or cellar. Otherwise, consider an interior hallway with no windows. Wherever your gathering place, just be sure to keep it uncluttered to minimize the danger of flying debris.
2. Put together an emergency preparedness kit complete with a portable battery-operated radio, flashlights, extra batteries, and enough food and water to last a few days.
3. Stay tuned to the news for tornado "watches" and "warnings." If and when a warning goes out, that means a tornado has been sighted or detected on radar. Immediately move to your designated room.
4. Crawl under a sturdy piece of furniture, like a desk or dresser. Tables work too, just as long as they don't have glass tops. Hold on to the table with one hand and protect your neck and head with the other. Be sure to keep a sturdy piece like this in your gathering place, along with your emergency preparedness kit.
5. Avoid using gas and electricity until you know it's safe to do so. If you suspect a problem, shut them off until a professional can assess the situation.
6. look for hazardous situations after the tornado, like loose plaster, dry walls, and ceilings that could collapse.

Floods
A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land.
They can occur in Minneapolis because of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River is the 10th
largest river in the world and the 4th longest river in the world.
![Page 10: Disaster Comparison By Mihir Reddy](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062305/56816253550346895dd29c63/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
How Do Floods Form• Too much rain• Dam failure• Unusually Rapid Snowmelt

What You Should Do If A Flood Occurs
• Get food/water• Evacuate!

Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms are clouds which grow of humidity and then discharge their water.
They are dangerous because they can produce tornadoes.
![Page 14: Disaster Comparison By Mihir Reddy](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062305/56816253550346895dd29c63/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
How Do Thunderstorms form
Thunderstorms are formed by the uplifting of warm and humid air. When the air goes to a high enough
altitude, it starts cooling down to form water molecules or a cloud. Then as the cloud gets bigger, the water molecules condense to form rain. If the
cloud is really big, it produces a thunderstorm.

What about Cairo, Egypt?
The following common natural disasters can happen in this area:
• Dust storms
![Page 16: Disaster Comparison By Mihir Reddy](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062305/56816253550346895dd29c63/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Dust Storms
As wind passes by, small particles rise into the air. Then when the buildup gets really big over time. That
gets blown by the wind to make a dust storm.
![Page 17: Disaster Comparison By Mihir Reddy](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062305/56816253550346895dd29c63/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
What to do in a dust storm
• Heed dust storm warnings• Be prepared• Outrun the storm if in a vehicle• Pull over if you're in a vehicle and you can’t see
more than 300 feet ahead of you• Take cover and stay put• Wear a mask• Protect your eyes• Shield yourself from flying objects
