TRANSCRIPT
TRAINING OF TRAINERS ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION
Disaster refers to a serious disruption of the functioning of a community involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected community to cope using its own resources.
Disasters are caused by natural or man-made events wherein communities experience severe danger and incur loss of lives and properties.
Disaster comes in a knick of time, holy or unholy hour. We could not foretell what part of the province/town would be devastated, nor we are never aware who the victims would be.
Typhoons, earthquake, flood, landslide, fire, sea and air mishaps are forms of disaster that claimed hundreds of casualties and thousands of families left homeless and caused millions of pesos of damaged to properties.
On the average, the Philippines experiences 20 typhoons a year, half of these are destructive.
The Philippines is a host to 300 volcanoes, twenty-two (22) of which are active, together with active faults and trenches that are potential sources of earthquakes.
Disaster preparedness must be undertaken to reduce their impact to the minimum.
Disaster risk reduction refers to the concept and practice of reducing disaster risk through systematic efforts to analyze and manage the causal factors of disasters, lessened vulnerability of people and property and improved preparedness for adverse events.
School plays a vital role in disaster preparedness for pupils/students. Every school must equip pupils/students with practical skills and knowledge for them to cope when unexpected natural disaster comes their way.
Objectives:
1. Orient the participants on disaster risk management;
2. Provide participants learner-focused set of skills and techniques to explore disaster issues.
Participants will be divided into 2 groups who alternate between one session and the next.
Participants are expected to conduct school/district level training on disaster risk management.
