FROM THE EOITORS:

Another epecies was added to tha New Mexico list when a female Gargany, a Euraaian dabbling duok, waa ahot at Bittar L. during an authorized hunting pariod. The se.son'a raritiea were our fourth Piping Plover, our third Great Kiakedea, end the second modarn document ad Cerulaan Warblar. A likely Eureeian Wigaon also was remarkable. And the Boreal Owl kept moving aouth.

Unusual sighting. w.ra numerous. A Common Black Hawk at Albuquerque and a Harris' Hawk at Boaque NIIR were out of place. Hummingbirda at the "wrong" placa or time included Rufous .t Post Office Canyon and Plea.anton, a Broadbilled at Hobbs, and a Calliope and two Magnificent. at Silver City feeders. A La Conta'. Sperrow was near CBprock. A probable record high for the epeciee wa. a congr.gation of 27,000 Violet-graan Swellows at Navajo Oam. Continuing their northward and weatward march, Bronzed Cowbirds ahowed up at Roawell, Socorro, Parcha Dam and Mang .. Spring.. Tarns at unaccuatomed sites included two Caapian. at Bluawater L., e Common et Hollomen L., and e Leaat at Bosque NIIR.

Seven vireo apscies were seen, end 31 werblere (notebly Golden-winged, Wormeating, Ksntucky, and the Ceruleenl. A Varied Thrush in Carlsbad was notable.

Bill Howe noted that, aa the new Brant lay Dam near Carlsbad fills, the watar lavel at upatream L. McMillan haa fallan, drying up a mereh et its north end thet "was an important area for marsh birds and shore birds in ths Pecos Vslley."

The spring count in the Sandies of northward-bound rsptors, February 1 through Msy 5, recorded 2,7BD birds of 18 apeciea, plus 122 not identified ss to spscies. Hawkwatch International (lateet neme) mansged ths count.

GARGANEY -- unusual: The first N.M. record of this small Eurasian dabbling duck -- a co~eeder from Britain to Siberia -- was belatedly analyzed in the NMOS Bulletin (Vol. 18, No. 3-4, 1990) by C. Gregory Schmitt. It was shot at Bitter L. during a hunting season by James B. Montgomery, Jr., who sent the left wing to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which identified it as an immature female Garganey. This difficult identification w~s confirmed ~¥ Schmitt, who made sure that it could not have ascaped from any licensed breeding flock in N.M. A rare wanderer to North America, the species has been sighted in the interior only on 16 other occasiona, and only 2 other females have been reported outside Alaska. Schmitt's detailed account in the Bulletin is a model well worth reading.
