Emergency FirewoodThe Emergency Firewood program is still happening every Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Community Center. If you run out of firewood and can’t afford more, we have some available, however this is not going to supply your entire firewood needs for the rest of the winter. Wood Stove Exchange ProgramTime to change out your inefficient wood stove & qualify for SRD’s Wood Stove Exchange Program The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is offering its Wood Stove Exchange Program once again this year which provides an opportunity for property owners to receive a $250 rebate, effective January 1st, 2021. The rebate is being offered on a first-come, first served basis to people that want to swap an old wood stove for a new, low emission model. If you live in in the villages of Gold River, Tahsis, Sayward, Zeballos and the four electoral areas and you have been thinking about upgrading your wood stove, now is the time. There is a limited supply of rebates and offer expires December 31, 2021. “By trading in your old, inefficient stove for a new, clean burning, high efficiency model you are helping to improve air quality for everyone in the region,” said SRD Chair Unger. “Not only do the new stoves burn hotter and slower, reducing smoke output by 70% and consuming less wood but it also reduces the fine particulate matter in wood smoke that are inhalable and can settle in the lungs”. All new stoves which have a CSA-/EPA certification are eligible. To participate, homeowners need to provide evidence that the old stove has been decommissioned, and the new stove has been installed in compliance with building codes. For more information regarding the program, please visit www.srd.ca/wood-stove-exchange-program or contact the SRD office at 250-830-6718 or [email protected]. The Strathcona Regional District’s Wood Stove Exchange Program is made possible through funding from the provincial Ministry of Environment.

ISLAND FORUM

Dear Quadra community, Being a new resident to this beautiful island I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. In summer of 2019 I had the privilege to sail to Desolation Sound and Discovery Islands. Sailing has been a passion of mine for years and sailing through this breath taking part of BC turned out to be a life changing experience for me. Prior to coming here, I haven’t even had any idea where Quadra was. After that initial sailing trip, I kept returning until I finally moved here permanently in September 2020. The long days stuck in traffic didn’t appeal to me anymore, the hustle and bustle of Vancouver wasn’t making me happy anymore. I craved the peacefulness, nature and serenity this island offered. It is however not the place as much as the people that live here that caught my attention at first. I fell in love here and then very quickly fell in love with the Island as well. Working as a Real Estate agent is another passion of mine. Getting into Real Estate proved to be the best and right choice for me and I highly treasure all the experiences I already gained. I became a home owner at a very young age, managed a flooring company, flipped houses and did various other jobs. None of them however provided me with a sense of fulfilment and excitement.Real Estate is not at all about numbers or houses. It’s ALL about people and people’s lives. It’s about caring, open and honest communication and always doing the right thing. As Realtors we have a fiduciary duty to represent our clients, putting our client’s needs ahead of our own. Buying a home is a very emotional and stressful process and Real Estate in many cases is the biggest investment any person will do in their lifetime. I believe it is important to have someone in your corner that really cares and understands, someone competent and trustworthy. As any changes in life, moving out here to a new territory comes with challenges. Covid has also brought many changes to our lives and we live in a different world now. I feel optimistic however that I will be able to contribute to this community in positive ways. My job can be very consuming but I absolutely love what I do and I am here to help in any way I can. Real Estate is my passion and I would love to share my knowledge and experiences with you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. My local number is 285-2141.Roman Krzaczek

Write it and They Will ComeThanks Grant for the sensational retort, and nice alias too .  What may seem like an inappropriate response to a gun to my chest, is a lack of empathy and clear observation.  You were sitting in the truck so never saw what took place. Just what you wanted to.  Having plates from Ontario a logical question about nonresident licenses.  I thank you and all the other articles for giving me the impetus to discuss subsistent hunting on Quadra Island, which I support. Clearly change of boundaries, and location of gun sighting needs to be considered, to a more remote location with online maps.A couple Sundays ago, the noise from shotgun ‘sighting’  from North Gowland Road was so perverse folks were unable to sit on the Gowland Ridge to enjoy the fleeting sun. I met folks leaving disgusted, and on the trail, those with children were clearly nervous, as the bluffs ricocheted the sound in multiple directions. The sound so loud the ridge did not buffer the horrific noise, and was heard by Hopespring road residents.  On Monday a woodlot owner found a apartment freezer dumped on their land, as if in protest, and the freezer showed the force of their intentions. Then to read in the same publication as your letter, nonlocals in full camouflage on the Haskin Farm trail is no bueno.  I have begun to make some inquiries about a community review to make the SOUTH residents only, and the NORTH border pushed back to Walcan road where a dedicated gun range can be proposed. I love Quadra, and have no problem sharing it with safe and responsible hunters,  foragers, cyclists and tourists.  Thanks again ‘Grant’ for the impetus.   The gps coordinates that mark where you parked is right in a tight confluence of woodlot, crown land and residential. Not sure if you were 100 meters from the house, were you ? The CO advises anyone with large acreage that is at risk of wandering hunters, should have clear No Hunting signs on every interface.  Safety first .Wildly Leanne

COMMUNITY NEWS & EVENTS

by Claire HeffernanSnow in the temperate rain forest. Don’t ya just love that white blanket of slippery, soggy, mucky, downright treacherous, slush. But we were warned that it was coming. Just like FBI who were following the internet must have known that on January 6th ... the mob was coming. But some reporters and even the sitting president are predicting there won’t be enough votes in the Senate to impeach ... you know who. They say that people won’t remember just how bad it was when hundreds (or was it thousands) of Make America White Again supporters yelping about the stolen election smashed windows and ransacked offices, leaving one dead (and four more to die of their injuries) and a trail of broken glass, blood and feces to be cleaned up by mostly black custodians. Until that day, I never paid much attention to the irony of the seat of power being called the White House. They don’t call it the United States of Amnesia for nothing. But I digress. Yes we knew the snow was coming so on a warm, sun soaked January pre snow day, we headed to Rebecca Spit. We always park our vehicle on Heriot Bay Road and ride our bikes into the park. After a couple of very pleasant hours of beach combing, walking the trails, nodding hello to one and all and having our lunch, we were returning to the car when we heard the distant sound of

guitars tuning up on the beach. We stopped and listened. These guys were good. We headed to the closest BC Parks picnic table to ditch our bikes and sit and enjoy the last rays of sun which was now low on the horizon and listen to the impromptu concert. It was then that suddenly and without warning, I came in contact with the picnic table. My front wheel had grazed the concrete base sticking up above the ground about three inches. It was just enough to pitch my mostly immobile carcass into the corner of the table nearly taking out my right eye. I was just lucky I didn’t break anything. Unlike former Vice President Mike Pence who was well advised to hide from the mob who were threatening to lynch him ... I didn’t see this bashing coming. Later at the clinic as Pat and her assistant were patching me up with crazy glue she commented ... “hmm ... that is quite a contusion on your right hip.” They don’t do stitches on the face anymore which is kind of a relief. They glue you up with a warning about possible infection. I was very grateful. After three baby boomer bashing’s in a row, I now have a name for this new activity. I call it my annual seniors tune up. I have now reached the age where my brain is still relatively intact but unfortunately my body just can’t keep up with all my youthful ambitions like downhill skiing, rock face climbing, sky diving and so on.

Like many Americans, I am in denial about my own shortcomings. Since I turned 65 three years ago, I have had one good knock a year. Falling off a ladder being the first and the second tripping on some roots on a trail and landing on both knees. And on all three occasions, like the former president trying to navigate a slippery ramp, I was barely moving. So what are the options. Continue enjoying the outdoors but with greatly reduced expectations regarding my ability and stamina. Or just stay indoors. Well, indoors is not always the safest option either. Take my cousin for example. She was enjoying her nightly glass of Glenfiddich single malt (neat) when she got up from her recliner to answer the phone and fell hitting her head on the nearest sharp object. When she woke up, she was being hauled to the hospital. Her doctor and part time sheep farmer scolded her ... “you lost a pint of blood and you could have died.” If you are an optimist like me, my response would be ... well, it could have been a quart. But not all seniors are as accident prone as me. Take my nearly 80 something husband. When he was a youthful 74, he decided to hike up to the very end of a 25 foot extension ladder to trim some branches on a GIANT cedar tree. Part way through this project, he accidentally cut the branch that the ladder was resting on and found himself airborne above a jumble of large rocks, old posts and logs with fortress like points masquerading as a fence, gnarly rounds of firewood and even some splintery, rusted logging cable thrown in. All I could do was stand there and watch in horror. It would not have been a pretty landing. But with some help from his not too distant simian ancestry, he managed to hold onto another cedar branch that was still attached to the tree and with his extraordinary balance reminiscent of a Cirque du Soleil acrobat, he scrambled down the ladder to the ground without incident. We can laugh now about all our mishaps but I feel in my case at any rate, it’s just a mater of time before one of these unforeseen events takes me out permanently. In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy life to the fullest. So I will pour myself a glass of tawny port and turn on the tv to take in the impeachment proceedings. I will listen with interest to the Republican’s breathtaking excuses of why someone who incited a riot in the White House should not be permanently barred from ever holding public office again. Stay tuned for the results.

Mid/late March - After maturing at 5 to 6 yrs old, eagles begin to lay one to three eggs. April - Brooding month. Parents take turns sitting on their eggs for ~35 days, +/- a week. May - Hatching time! June - Hatchlings may be heard & spotted sitting on edge of the nest by mid-June. Both parents raise the chicks. Within a few weeks, they will test their wings and jump around the nest.

Spring

Late July - About 85 days after hatching, the

eaglets will take their first flight. They will

explore their local territory for the next month

Mid-August to September - Many eagles

migrate off-island.

Mid- October - The eagles begin to return

and get to work on their nests, which are

generally the same ones that they

have used for years.

Summer

November - Eagle nests are among the largest in the world, weighing a tonne or more as large as a small car! They ideally need large old-growth Douglas Fir trees. All eagle nest trees in BC are protected by law. Mid-November to January 31 - Winter survival time. Nest-building stops during shorter and colder days. Eagles hunt for fish and winter-weakened birds and ducks.

Fall

$

Valentine’s Day - Love is in the aerie! Eagles generally have one partner for life. They mate early February to early March. Aerial courtship is incredible to witness, with loud calls in unison, but the mating itself always takes place in a standing position. Once this happens, a final flurry of nest preparation ensues (the first stage is in the fall). More branches and soft dry material is added.

Better at Home is Ready to Give Quadra Seniors a HandCould you use help with housekeeping or repairs around the house? Need a ride to your doctor’s appointment? The newly launched Quadra Island Better at Home program is here to help. Managed by Quadra Circle, the Better at Home program offers a basket of services to Quadra seniors to help them live independently in their own homes and stay connected to the community. “We’re so happy to finally have this program on Quadra,” says, Maureen McDowell, volunteer and  Program Manager of Quadra Circle and Quadra Island Better at Home. “We’ve seen how well it’s worked in other communities and appreciate the flexibility offered by the United Way to tailor it to our community’s needs.”Currently, the program on Quadra offers six services, regardless of your income level: Light Housekeeping, Transportation (for medical purposes and for deliveries), Minor Home Repairs, Light Yard Work, Snow Removal, and Friendly Visiting. Kristene Perron, the new Program Coordinator says, “One of the benefits of using these services through Quadra Island Better at Home is the peace of mind clients will have knowing that all service providers are screened, have criminal record checks, and are insured where it’s necessary. We also have COVID safety protocols in place to make sure everyone stays safe.” Some of the services have fees but the program has a sliding scale subsidy, which means that for low-income seniors the cost will be minimal or free. For example a single person with annual income of less than $18,360, (or $27,960 for a couple) receives the services for free. A single person with income of over $41,500 (or $68,701 for a couple) pays 100% of the services cost. Those in other income brackets pay 20% to 80%. These costs range from $6.40 per hour for housekeeping at an 80% subsidy level and $32.00 per hour for those paying 100% of the cost. “Friendly visiting is free, as is our transportation service during the pandemic,” Perron says. “We want to make sure seniors can safely make it to doctor and lab appointments, even those in Campbell River, and we know how difficult that can be right now.” Housekeeping is another area where Better at Home can help during the current restrictions. “We have a WorkSafeBC COVID safety plan in place. Both housekeeper and client  have guidelines to follow, including pre-appointment screening and PPE. For seniors who want help with housework but are concerned about having a stranger in their home, this is a good, safe option,” Perron says.  “As well, we pay the workers, manage the volunteers, invoice the clients, and monitor the service, making it easy for seniors to receive these important services and maintain their independence.”Registration for the program is easy and can be done, by appointment with Kristene, in the Quadra Circle office or over the phone. Services are provided by a combination of volunteers, staff, and subcontractors. New volunteers are also welcome and anyone who would like to help is encouraged to stop by the Quadra Circle office to pick up a brochure and an application. For more information about the Quadra Island Better at Home program, contact Kristene Perron at 250-285-2255 or email her at [email protected]. Details can also be found on the Quadra Circle website at: https://quadracircle.ca/better-at-homeSubmitted by Kristene Perron

with thanks to GROWLS” or “adapted from GROWLS” or similar.  Gabriola Rescue of Wildlife SocietyLaura Bennett

The following is compiled greetings from letters written by Aniliza Macad and Zeah Mae Paclay in the northern Philippines. These are the two grade 6 and 7 students whose education is being supported by our Quadra community. Their letters were accompanied by homemade Christmas cards expressing appreciation and wishing us well! Dear Sponsors at Quadra Island Community,Hello again my dear sponsors. I am wondering how you are at this moment. I hope you are always fine together with your family. How is your weather condition? I hope you were able to have a very merry Christmas. I send you much affection as well as peace, health and happiness for the new year. Included with my letter is also much love and gratitude for helping me in my studies and in my life. With regard to my family my father has been so busy working on our little farm and I have been helping my mother with household chores. December 25th was Christmas Day which I have always looked forward to since being a little kid. It is a time of being together as a family and celebrating the real essence of Christmas by remembering the birth of Christ. It is a time to understand the lessons

from our Creator and reflect on them. We all enjoy this time by building stronger relationships with our family and friends and trying to spread love and peace around us. We try also to forget the bad memories and begin new ones. Seeing my family happy was more than enough of a gift for me. We celebrated together by cooking simple foods such as sticky rice and going to mass which was my big wish. How about you? How was your celebration at your place? With regard to my studies, I already received my examination papers and already answered some of it. One of my classmates said it is easier to take the exam by module. But for me I prefer taking the exam in a formal way because in a module form students have more opportunity to cheat. But I have learned to be honest with myself and believe if I cheat, I will never really win. Thankfully my aunt who is a student also and very patient is able to explain some of the questions that I don`t understand. I cannot say anything but thank you for every single help that you are providing me. Until now I hope you enjoy reading my simple letter. Wishing this pandemic will end soon so that things will be back to somewhat normal. Thank you again so much and I love you all!

YAHOO! Seniors Housing (QISHS) finally received a 'Permit to Construct a Water Treatment System' on January 27, 2021. By the time you read this, BC Housing will be reviewing the exact costs for the Water Tank Shed and remaining parts for the water treatment system (WTS) before issuing approval (a 3-week process). We don't anticipate a refusal, since QISHS can manage the additional debt, thanks to the low mortgage rate currently available. Because of shipping delays related to Covid, we have already ordered a new part that could take 6 weeks to 12 weeks to arrive. Once BC Housing approves funding, our contractor, Muchalat Group, will build the Tank Shed and connections to the Residence. Ken Embury of Quadra Water Solutions, assisted by QISHS Board volunteer, Wolf Becker, will assemble the WTS.After the completed WTS is sanitized, water-quality is tested by VIHA. With clean test results, Ken will then notify the Environmental Health Officer in Campbell River, who will view the system in operation and issue a 'Permit to Operate' the WTS. This

Permit takes a couple of days. While all this is happening, Muchalat will finish remaining construction items, test all appliances, plumbing and electrical systems and train the resident Manager, Sandra Riley, and Board volunteer, Wolf Becker, to monitor the building systems and Safety Plan. We can legally move tenants in as soon as we receive the Operating Permit. With so many variables, however, we can't specify a moving date yet, but will keep tenants and the community updated frequently.Donations Received: Board Director Owen Williams has kindly donated the cost of a video produced by Neil Maffin to give all a tour of the Seniors Residence, since Covid restrictions prevent us from celebrating completion of the building with our tenants and the Quadra community. We'll also talk about the challenges and successes we've faced in making this dream come true.A BIG THANK YOU goes to the many generous community members who have donated furniture and household items for our Common living/dining area and for our tenants. That was a saving of over $16,000. Thanks to a donation of lumber

from Dick Whittington for the pond spillway boardwalk along Harper Road, we are now sourcing volunteers to build it. In front of the pond, please watch for our Fund-raising Thermometer (donated by Waypoint Signs), with plywood gifted by Mel Doak. We also really appreciate the cash donations recently received in response to our last article. How you can help: Owen Williams is leading a fundraising campaign now to assist QISHS with items which we can't afford., including: 1) wood dividers between the suite patios; 2) a footbridge over the ditch between our O'Connor Road seniors units and the new Seniors Residence; 3) a 45000 W propane-fueled generator for use during power outages. Please contact Betty Doak for donations of items and labour: 285-3590; [email protected] card and cash donations eligible for 2021 Income Tax Receipts can be made through our website: www.qishs.ca or send cheques payable to QISHS to PO Box 535, Quathiaski Cove, BC, V0P1N0. For information on the project contact Maureen McDowell: 285-2221, [email protected]

SEARCHING FOR KETCH-BOAT KATE(maybe “Cate”?)Tattoos and striking red hair; she loves to dance. I met her in December 2019 at the Saturday night swing in Toronto. It was fun.  I’d like to get in touch. She said that she lived on a 54 foot steel-hulled ketch @ Quadra, and worked in a vintage shop. I think her father lives in Etobicoke. That’s all I’ve got.Would have come looking, but travel has been difficult. I’d appreciate any information as to her whereabouts. Please call/text to 416-875-2470. Or pass my number on if you know her. E-mail address [email protected]  Thank you.
