Discover a network full of possibilities A brief portrait of the German Welding Society (DVS)

02 | Brief portrait of DVS

A warm welcome to DVS!

DVS – these three letters stand for “Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V.” (“German Welding Society”). However, they also stand for “DIE VERBINDUNGS SPEZIALISTEN” (“THE JOINING SPECIALISTS”). Because our working fi eld is joining technology with its currently approx. 250 different processes on which all our activities in DVS focus.

Scientists and researchers, manufacturers and users, trainees and students as well as skilled craftsmen, company represent-atives, partner associations and organisations also input their expert knowledge and their interest in joining technology into DVS. They are all THE JOINING SPECIALISTS and form an ex-tensive joining technology network which is well-known inter-nationally.

On the following pages, we would like to present our society with the different success factors for the effective “DVS” net-work to you in greater detail.

Who we are and what we do

Almost 120 years of experience characterise our work because the beginnings of today‘s DVS go back as far as 1897. Finally, the “German Society for Welding Technology” was fi rst men-tioned in 1947. However, the subject fi eld of our activities be-came ever wider with advancing technological development. In addition to welding, all the processes for everything to do with joining, cutting and coating therefore determine the spectrum of our DVS work today. And in order to do justice to this widerang-ing framework, DVS has absolutely offi cially been called “DVS - German Society for Welding and Allied Processes” since 1998.

Both at that time and today, experts from industry, skilled crafts, commerce, research, science, teaching and services came and come together in our society in order to jointly show their com-mitment to the same cause: future-oriented joining technology. The close interlinking of research, technology and education counts in DVS. Whatever results are elaborated in one of these three fi elds are automatically incorporated into both the other

fi elds too. DVS‘s set of rules, consisting of technical bulletins, technical codes and guidelines, is amongst the most infl uential working results of this technical-scientifi c cooperation.

Ever new material combinations or joining processes are being discovered and implemented in applications. The most diverse materials can be joined with modern joining technology, either by hand or in mechanised processes. We as THE JOINING SPECIALISTS are actively involved when new processes are being researched and provide distinct stimuli due to our own research activities. As DVS, we are contacts when it is a matter of improving existing joining processes. We elaborate guide-lines, technical codes and technical bulletins which not only formulate technological standards but also set comparable quality characteristics with regard to the training of specialist personnel. In DVS‘s more than 320 educational establishments throughout Germany, teaching and learning are carried out ac-cording to DVS standards and our tasks also include the regu-lar checking of the compliance with these standards. Moreover, our society is intensively dedicated to promoting the up-and-coming generation and initiates campaigns for a more positive image of joining technology.

With the DVS campaign entitled “Joining technology. Every-where. Convincing.”, we would like to provide our members, the experts from the sector and precisely the laypeople too with more detailed information about the diversity and potential of joining technology. This happens on the basis of motifs from everyday life: No matter whether a motorcycle, a shopping trol-ley or the Sony Center - these are just three examples in which joining, cutting and coating play major roles. The campaign il-lustrates that many familiar objects or buildings would not be conceivable at all without joining technology. In addition, we portray our most important fi elds of membership, promotion of the up-and-coming generation, research and technology as well as education and certifi cation in large pictures and striking slogans. “We have the rules for this” and “The pole position for your career is here” show the observers what main focal points await them in DVS. In this brochure, you can fi nd the motifs assigned to the respective fi elds.

Schweißtechnische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt SLV Halle GmbH (formerly “Mitteldeutsche Schweißlehr- und Versuchsanstalt”) has existed since 1930. With its training of personnel for welding technology and testing technology, it is particularly strongly anchored in Central Germany. Out of tradition, the business activities still encompass a wide re-search spectrum today too. Developments take place in the technological field but also include materials testing tasks as well as subjects relating to the designing and calculation of welded components. SLV Halle renders a special service with the Online Registers for DIN EN 15085 and DIN EN 1090 developed and operated by it.

ifw Günter-Köhler-Institut für Fügetechnik und Werk-stoffprüfung GmbH in Jena was founded in 1992 and is a partner for the economy and, in particular, for technolo-gy-oriented medium-sized enterprises. The company strat-egy is based on the close interweaving of the profile lines of research, services as well as training and further education. Therefore, ifw Jena also offers a comprehensive range of programmes available for training, ongoing education and further education.

www.ifw-jena.de

Schweißtechnische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt SLV Mannheim GmbH was transformed from an institute of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg into a non-profit-mak-ing limited liability company in 1978 and offers a wide spec-trum of services. It is a partner for practical and theoretical training and the first contact in nearly all the questions aris-ing in welding technology.

The work of DVS ZERT GmbH focuses on management systems and products. When DVS ZERT uses a certificate in order to attest that stipulations of international or national standards are complied with as far as organisational se-quences, operational processes and/or the product man-ufacture are concerned, then everybody knows: Here, the quality was tested by an independent body. Especially when satisfying stringent safety requirements, companies are obliged to have their internal sequences certified. How-ever, many plants also have such auditing carried out volun-tarily in order to emphasise their own quality claims.

www.dvs-zert.de

With its work, the Research Association on Welding and Allied Processes of DVS safeguards national and interna-tional research activities in the fields of joining, cutting and coating. In order to guarantee that the research projects are particularly close to practical needs, the Research Associ-ation also ensures that companies are permanently incor-porated into all the phases of the research activities. And because the Research Association of DVS focuses on Joint Industrial Research (IGF), not only large companies but also small and medium-sized businesses have chances to for-mulate the need for research and to profit from the results.

The media of DVS

In order to disseminate our diverse information such as rese-arch results, sets of rules, teaching media and event notices internally and externally, we in DVS make use of various media.

DVS-Magazin

In this respect, the members‘ magazine called DVS-Magazin is available to the DVS members as the most important source of information. This is published twice per year, every spring and autumn. A special edition of DVS-Magazin with the character of an annual report is delivered in the summer. In every edition, DVS-Magazin provides information about essential events from the activities in the society in an entertaining way.

Subject-specific newsletters

By electronic means too, our members learn the news from their society every two months due to both the newsletters called DVS-News and DVS-News Nachwuchs. Similar to DVS-Ma-gazin, a colourful mixture of subjects provides a brief overview of the diverse life in the society. Regional reports from DVS‘s state and district branches are also placed here. In contrast, the newsletters called „Aktuelles aus Forschung & Technik“ and „Bildung aktuell“ are planned with specifi c contents. They are also published every two months.

Series of „Im Fokus“ brochures

In addition to many different brochures and fl yers, we provide information with the series of „Im Fokus“ brochures relating to one main subject area and concrete examples of how the joint technical-scientifi c work functions in DVS and what results close to practical needs it yields. However, in this way, we primarily invite interested people to participate in the diverse activities in our society.

Trade journals and more

Since we as a society are oriented to technology and science, we also have national and international trade journals in our media range. Here, particular mention should be made of SCHWEIS-SEN UND SCHNEIDEN, DER PRAKTIKER and WELDING AND CUTTING which are produced and distributed by DVS Media GmbH. The trade journals are available as subscriptions and, of course, are cheaper for DVS members. Specialist books and different posters about the various aspects of joining technology are also available from the publishing house.

Research and technology in DVS

The intensive cooperation between research, technology and education is a core element of the joint technical-scientifi c work in DVS. Its objectives are to exchange specialist information without delay and to provide specialist information close to practical needs for industry, skilled crafts and science. Tech-nological innovations are covered by the set of joining techno-logy rules. The expert world is continuously informed about the developments and results in joining technology. DVS‘s set of rules, consisting of DVS technical bulletins, technical codes and guidelines, indicates the state of the art in each case and defi nes comparable standards. Because we in DVS also clo-sely cooperate with various institutes and organisations from the fi eld of standardisation, we incorporate the working results into national and international standardisation measures too. Thus, DVS‘s set of rules supports and explains, for example, the application of standards in a very successful way close to practical needs.

In DVS, the “Research and Technology” Department combines all the activities of the Research Association on Welding and Allied Processes of DVS and the Technical Committee (AfT). In this respect, the Research Association and AfT are closely intermeshed with each other. This means that research results from the Research Association are taken up in the working groups of the Technical Committee and, if necessary, are re-fl ected in DVS‘s set of technical rules. In turn, scientifi c ques-tions dealt with by AfT are taken into direct consideration in the research activities of the Research Association.

More than 2,300 experts in over 200 working groups or bodies are involved in our DVS in order to jointly perpetuate the state of the art in joining technology in a continuous way close to ap-plications, to fi nd exact-fi tting solutions to arising requirements and to safeguard the future of joining technology in this way. Their common objective: “To push ahead with pioneering new technical developments and to preserve and consolidate exis-ting developments”

DVS‘s set of technical rulesThe access to DVS‘s set of technical rules with its over 500 DVS technical bulletins, technical codes and guidelines is free of charge for all the members of the society at www.dvs-regelwerk.de. The access to the password-protected area is made possible by the member‘s number and the postcode.

Education and Certification in DVS

We in DVS see high-quality training in joining technology as a matter of great urgency. Therefore, we pay particular attention to our diverse range of training and further education on offer. The available range and teaching contents of DVS‘s educatio-nal establishments are refi ned and updated constantly. This is the task of the Education Committee (AfB) which is responsible for the uniform training and qualifi cation testing materials within the framework of the qualifi cation of specialists and managers dealing with joining technology.

The practical training and further education of workers and welders as well as the training of coordinators and managers belong to the comprehensive areas of tasks of DVS-PersZert, the certifi cation body for personnel qualifi cation.

DVS-PersZert ensures that all our training and further educati-on measures meet the most stringent quality demands. In the more than 320 DVS-authorised educational establishments all over Germany, consideration is given to the proximity to occupational practice, to the requirements of the market, to the newest technological developments and to international-ly applicable requirements with regard to training and further education. In addition to the training activities, DVS-PersZert is responsible, in particular, for the staging and acceptance of qualifi cation tests. These are carried out according to defi ned stipulations and follow both national and international stan-dards. Joining technology qualifi cations and qualifi cation tests in DVS are highly regarded on the employment market and an important contribution to the competitiveness of the German economy.

The work in the “Education and Certifi cation” Department is very well-known on the international level too. DVS-PersZert is

the only body in Germany to be recognised by the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and the European Federation for Wel-ding, Joining and Cutting (EWF). That entitles DVS as an ANB (Authorized National Body) to carry out training according to the international guidelines of IIW and EWF and to issue inter-nationally recognised diplomas and certifi cations. With the trai-ning for “International Welders”, we have created an exclusivity characteristic which is recognised and unrivalled internationally.

Poster entitled “Career paths in welding technology”The poster entitled “Career paths in welding technology” portrays the various career stages which can be reached with the aid of DVS‘s ranges of available teaching. DVS-PersZert has taken up the different paths of the qualifi -cations and offers a unique system for lifelong learning in welding technology. Order the poster at: www.dvs-ev.de/bestellung.

Transfer and Network in DVS

The “Transfer and Network” Department is of central signifi -cance for DVS. It is split into the Events and Member Service Divisions. The Events Division is responsible for the organisa-tion of DVS‘s diverse events which, as far as the subjects are concerned, are initiated (for example) by the experts in research and technology. The Member Service is the contact for mem-bers and non-members.

Events

Across Germany, we use fair-accompanying congresses at home and abroad as well as many specialist events such as conferences, seminars and workshops for promoting the exch-ange of knowledge and experience between the DVS members and other interested people in the joining technology sector. In this respect, the DVS CONGRESS is a permanent fi xture in DVS‘s calendar every year. It traditionally takes place in Sep-tember and unites various individual events: The Annual Wel-ding Conference (GST) and the DVS Students Congress are elements of the DVS CONGRESS year in year out while other conferences or colloquia are often added.

Internationally too, we as DVS are represented with signifi cant events recognised in the expert world. Particular emphasis should be placed on the International Congress and Exhibition on Aluminium Brazing, the International Conference on Bra-zing, High Temperature Brazing and Diffusion Bonding (LÖT) and the International Thermal Spray Conference & Exposition (ITSC) which all have exclusivity characteristics worldwide. The-re are also workshops and lecture forums which are staged in the context of the various foreign fairs from the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN family.

Skilled crafts in DVS

Promotion of the up-and-coming generation in DVS

It is nothing new that we in DVS have been cooperating with the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) for years when it is a matter of joining, cutting and coating technologies. For this purpose, the “Skilled Crafts / DVS” Coordination Group was already founded in 2009 so that both organisations could sup-port each other and advance common interests.

As a supplement to the activities until then, the cooperation was intensified in 2015. For example, the new information fol-der entitled “Skilled crafts and DVS. A powerful alliance.” was presented to the public at the DVS EXPO 2015 in Nuremberg. In order to extend the activities of DVS and ZDH even further in our society, Dr. Ing. Ursula Beller took up her work as the Coordinator of “Skilled Crafts in DVS” on October 1, 2015. Her

main task is to strengthen the exchange of information between us and the skilled crafts in an enduring form. This also includes familiarising the skilled crafts with innovations and new techno-logies from the results of DVS‘s work.

DVS places its faith in its up-and-coming generation. In the “Transfer and Network” and “Education and Certification” De-partments, we promote the interest of trainees, students and young professionals in joining, cutting and coating in many campaigns. We draw attention to the occupational paths in joi-ning technology and show various training and further educa-tion possibilities.

In the studies in the field of joining technology, students cer-tainly get to know their DVS student groups. No matter whether participation in the popular practical workshops or the possi-bility of presenting their scientific papers to an (international) expert public - we in DVS help tomorrow‘s specialists to ad-vance themselves and bring them together with experts from the sector.

Welding competitions offers motivation and new perspectives for choosing the future occupations. DVS‘s “Young Welders” competition gives young people the opportunity to prove their skills in four welding processes. Perhaps, a few participants are

also currently being trained as “Specialists for Metal Technolo-gy, Specialist Field: Design Engineering”. We brought this trai-ning occupation into being in 2013 together with the Federation of German Employers‘ Associations in the Metal and Electrical Engineering Industries.
