Graz connoisseurs love this city for its beauty, charm and spiritedness, as well as for its warmth and joie de vivre. For its culinary skills in a class of their own. and for the fact that Graz is such a delightful blend of small town and big city.

Graz. austria’s second largest city boasts more than 900 years of vibrant history: on your visit to Graz, you will discover many testimonies bearing witness to its vibrant past, lots of references to the present and many visionary indicators of the future. Delightfully topped off with its sun-drenched, southern-European flair.

“Friendly alien” – Kunsthaus Graz.

55

The remarkable result of this: the best-preserved historic city centre in Central Europe is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. In addition, Graz was declared UNESCO City of Design in 2010, and is one of only 16 cities worldwide to have received this award. all thanks to its contemporary architecture and enor-mous creative potential in art, fashion and technology.

Scarcely anywhere else in the world will you find such an outstanding variety of architectural styles packed into such a small area, ranging from the early middle ages right through to the 21st century. Hidden alleyways, romantic inner courtyards, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture: entire ages ‘live’ here side-by-side – and right next to multiple-award-winning futuristic architecture.

The venerable Joanneum, Central Europe’s largest multidisci-plinary museum, showcases a whole series of interesting col-lections both at its new and ultra-modern Joanneum Quarter and at various other sites. Eggenberg Palace too is part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum. It houses several museums and is set within a splendid park. Not to mention the ‘Friendly alien’ – the Kunsthaus Graz that features contemporary art from all over the world.

at every turn, you will encounter proof of Graz having for-merly been a Habsburg residence: at the Graz Burg, with its Gothic double-spiral staircase, at the Gothic-style Cathedral and the mausoleum commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand II. Well worth a visit are the Landhaus in Herrengasse, with itssplendid Renaissance-style inner courtyard, and the Zeughausarmoury, housing the largest historical collection of weaponsin the world.

around: the clock tower alone is a fascinating curiosity. The small and big hands are swapped, causing some visitors to check their watches in confusion. anecdote has it that when Napoleon wanted to blow up the clock tower, the people of Graz simply bought it back from him … Their vision ensured that one of the finest views in Graz remains today – not to mention the wide range of gastronomy to be found up here.

Sooner or later you’ll end up here, on the wooded hill right in the middle of the historic city centre, and you won’t be able to get enough of the view: looking down from the Graz Schlossberg onto the brick-red roofs of the city, it’s an indescribable feeling. New lovers, however, are usually less interested than most – and this has always been Graz’s favourite spot for romance. It’s still well worth taking a look

Graz has certainly earned the title ‘Capital of Delight’. Its mix of sensual, mediterranean lifestyle and a mild climate in which fruit, vegetables and wine thrive, provides perfect conditions for culi-nary flights of fancy. Graz has long been known as the bicycle-friendliest city in austria – locals discovered early on that the quickest and greenest way to get around is on two wheels. So it’s no coin-cidence that Graz is home to some of the world’s technology and market leaders in biomass, solar thermal energy, water technology and waste recycling. Graz is also the highlight of the 360 km-long mur bicycle path from Lungau to Bad

Graz “märchenbahn” fairy tale train has been re-opened – kids certainly know that visiting Rumpelstiltskin and friends isn’t just a bad weather treat. There are plenty of parks and play-grounds in Graz. Wiki adventure Park, for instance, was listed amongst the favourites in the austrian a list – just try it out. “Indoor fun” is what “Haus der Spiele”, “Kinderfreundehaus” and the new family-friendly café on Tummelplatz square offer. and if summer in the city really gets too hot, we recommend a visit to Graz auster swimming baths and its kiddies’ area.

Families are particularly well looked after in Graz. With kids, the city gets much more colourful – they certainly shape the image of many parks and tourist attractions. Despite mobile phones, laptops and the like, “listening, seeing and touching” are still very popular. In Graz, knowledge is passed on play-fully, be it at the “FRida & freD” children’s museum with its numerous specials, the Folk Life museum or Natural History museum, the Styrian armoury or Eggenberg Palace. actually, who wouldn’t like to know how a trick lock works? at the Hans Schell Collection this secret is unveiled. With a difference in altitude of approximately 1000 metres, Schöckl mountain is a popular destination and ideal for various types of excursions. It features a variety of hiking paths and cycling routes that you can explore and combine as you wish. The ancient castles of the region, on the other hand, are not the place for peace and quiet. Schloss Herberstein is home to a wildlife park, while, above the towering fortress at Riegersburg, falcons circle: tame, but no less impressive for it.

Just half an hour’s drive away lie the rolling hills of the south Styrian wine-growing region, home to world-class vintages and rich in tradition. Enjoy both in one of the many “Buschenschänke” to be found here, rustic taverns producing their own wines and food – such as the typical “Brettljause”, a wooden platter of assorted hams, pâtés and salami. Right in the historic city centre or a little outside the centre? First-class city hotel, hip design hotel, cosy B & B or spacious apartment? Graz offers a wide selection of accommodation in a variety of locations and price ranges, always well furnished and run with typical Styrian hospitality. The map here offers a good first overview.

The art of living. Galleries and museums have set opening times – the Schlossberghotel, however, is full of beautiful things to admire around the clock. According to Austrian journalist Helmut A. For its sheer density of contemporary original art within perfectly restored architecture and furnishings, there is nowhere comparable.” Located at the foot of the Schlossberg hill, in the heart of the historic city centre.

Hotel wiesler

At the hotel Wiesler you can expect more than simply a bed: breakfast, lunch or dinner in the ‘Speisesaal’ restaurant, a real barber and of course free WiFi throughout the hotel. With its both pleasantly easy-going and classy ambiance, Wiesler makes you feel at home, just like good friends do.
