Summer 2013, a year earlier than expected, Lake Cumberland is on the rise. By the time you read this, the lake should be between 700 and 705 feet above sea level and welcoming swarms of water enthusiasts to the most beautiful lake in the world.

For the past six summers, Lake Cumberland has been operated at about 40 feet below normal to facilitate repairs at Wolf Creek Dam. Briar Bowl has long been a fixture in Somerset. With 24 lanes, a restaurant, billiards, dart boards, etc., the Somerset Bowling Alley has been a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. But changes with the local option election allowing bars and alcohol sales in the city has given a new look and new offerings for Briar Bowl. Completing work on renovations about two months ago, a new entrance to the facilities has a welcoming sign, “Keglers”. It is the entrance to a completely renovated section of Briar Bowl to have a bar, an entertainment center and special additions to their restaurant menu to compliment bar offerings.

Briar Bowl and Kegler’s is located at 1084 S. Hwy 27, or light #10. The billiards section has been made into a room with the bar. The restaurant

section of the facility continues to offer sandwiches, beer battered fries and appetizers. Their main features are “burgers” and “wings”. Keglers works

exclusively with their food venders to have exclusive menu offerings not available anywhere else in the Lake Cumberland area. They then can offer special menu selections such as their beer battered chicken tenders, served with choice of fries and dipping sauce, beer

battered onion rings, etc. An example of a special offered this month is beer battered chicken tenders served with choice of fries and dipping sauce for $4.95.

As to liquor and bar sales, Keglers will have a “Happy Hour” Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Kegler’s Brew Pint drafts will sell for $1.50 and boneless wings will be half priced. Many more drink and food specials will be offered

In conjunction with the bowling alley recreation offering, Kegler’s will have a lane waitress serving food and drinks.

For entertainment, they have a corner stage that will be used for live performances of local bands and karaoke performances. For May 11 and 17 the stage will be open for Karaoke at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 18 will feature “Borrowed Blue” entertainers, Saturday May 25, “Borrowed Blue” at 8 p.m. and every Thursday night, DJ Travisty and Ink Master J at 8 p.m.

The Lake Cumberland Region has three outstanding State Parks. Lake Cumberland State Resort Park is at the western end of the lake near Wolf Creek Dam. General Burnside Island State Park is in the middle of the lake’s 100 mile length, and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is past the eastern end of the lake along the North Fork of the Cumberland River.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park is the largest of Kentucky’s resort parks, with 3,117 acres of land. Open year round, it is a popular destination for all seasons. The park has a variety of choices of accommodations, from a modern “Lure Lodge” with motel like rooms, but with lake views

to rustic original old lodge rooms, rustic cabins and also their modern “Wildwood” cabins with upstairs lofts. The lodge has an indoor pool, open all year, and which is open to all lodge and cabin guests. There are also abundant campsites with modern bath houses, RV sites with water and electric and a dumping station.

The Resort Park also has an Olympic sized swimming pool open to the public, a 9-hole Frisbee golf course, tennis courts, a volley ball court, lots of play land equipment both near the lodge and in the camping areas, miniature golf, horse back trail riding, individual picnic and group picnic areas, a boat launching ramp, State Dock with houseboat and other craft rentals and a supply store. There are hiking trails and numerous spectacular overlooks.

Burnside Island State Park is located off U.S. 27 just south of Burnside. A causeway puts you on the island. It’s main features include a large boat launching ramp and parking area, an 18 hole challenging hilly golf course with pro shop and cart rental. The only island park in the system, Burnside Island State Park has 430 mostly developed acres with picnic

areas, playground equipment and picnic shelters that can be rented for group activities. The large camping area has 94 sites with modern bath houses and also some primitive camp sites.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park has the falls as it’s main attraction. Called the “Niagara of the South”, this thunderous, very large falls is a year round attraction as is it’s unique exclusive views of a nighttime “moonbow”—

reportedly being only one of two in the world.

Other unique features of the park include its DuPont Lodge with 51 rooms that offer beautiful views and full amenities. A large restaurant overlooks the Cumberland River and forest.

Several cottage rentals are available along with campsites with bathhouses, supply store and more. Summertime activities in the park include an Olympic sized pool, open to the public, horseback riding, numerous nearby forest trails, waterfall views, other than Cumberland Falls, such as Eagle Falls and Dog Slaughter Falls.

In addition to the park facilities, nearby facilities include horse back riding, white water rafting trips, etc.

“A new lake” That is what Lake Cumberland is being called this season. With the water level down for several years, the banks of Lake Cumberland and its tributaries, coves and inlets

have sprouted weeds, bushes and small trees. With the water level being raised due to the completed dam repairs, this underbrush is being covered. Right now, some of this growth is in 15 and

more feet of water, making for better spawning beds and cover for the fish.

in 2014, the lake’s fish population will continue to grow and produce fantastic fishing for years in the future. Right now, with the water already almost 20 feet deeper and red clay flats being covered and inlets filled, there has been a marked increase in catches of all kinds of game fish. He cited a recent tournament where it took a catch of five smallmouth bass weighing l8 and ½ pounds to win. There was a lot of fish caught for that tournament. And, when it comes to baits, just about everything seems to be working, spinner baits, flukes etc. Greg told of a fisherman the other day catching 100 keeper crappie.

So, bass, smallmouth and largemouth, stripers, crappie, walleye, blue gill will all bring in large catches throughout the spring and summer on Lake Cumberland. And, to my delight, white bass are back. The Corps of Engineers last year stocked the lake with white bass and so we can expect to catch them in this spring as they move up creeks to spawn and in summer “in the jumps” when the whites cause a churning of the waters even when the lake is calm as they devour schools of shad. Pullen said some are already catching white bass at the head of Pitman Creek and catches should be good up Fishing and White Oak Creeks.

Summer Tournaments are a fun feature of fishing on Lake Cumberland. Starting the last Thursday night in May, Lake Cumberland Pro Bass will host fishing tournaments every Thursday night throughout the summer from 7p.m. to midnight from the Burnside Island ramp. As it was last year other

sponsors put on Tournaments on Friday and Saturday nights from the Burnside Island ramp from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. and later in the summer from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Other tournaments are being held for National Fishing Week. The Kids Catch

a Rainbow trout fishing tournament is scheduled for June 1, at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery where over 1,500 kids with their parents are expected to participate. All activities, food and prizes are sponsored and free. Similar tournaments, but for lake fish such as crappie and bass will be held, one for Wayne County (606-348-3160) and another for Pulaski County 606-864-4163).

Trout Fishing: The Lake Cumberland region offers some of the best trout

fishing in the country. The tail waters of the lake have produced the largest brown trout on record. But several area streams also are stocked regularly and yield good catches throughout the season. There is a website www.gameandfishingmag.com that has an

article on the 6 prime sites for catching trout in this area. It mentions the trail waters, but also Otter Creek and Beaver Creek that empty into Lake Cumberland along it’s south shore.

It also describes Rock Creek in McCreary County where you can enjoy fishing in beautiful remote settings of the Daniel Boone Forest. While highlighting 6 prime spots, it also lists a host of other good locations, many of which surround or are near Lake Cumberland.

Guides: A listing of fishing guides for both lake fishing and trout fishing would be too long a list for this magazine. However, several of the fishing supply stores display cards and are happy to make their recommendations. The same can be said of the marinas. For some, using a guide and having a successful outing adds a new and enjoyable dimension to their vacation to Lake Cumberland.

No trip to Lake Cumberland would be complete without visiting the Big South Fork National Park. And it can be said that no trip to the park would be complete without visiting the Blue Heron Mine and taking a train ride to it.

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway operates out of Stearns, Ky., and starting this month operates trains six days a week, with two rides scheduled for Saturdays. Just go south on U.S. 27 and follow the signs to get there. The railway operates out of the same building that is used as the northern visitor center for the national park.

During the week trains leave the station at 11 a.m. On Saturdays and on one Sunday, June 26, the train makes two runs. The Saturday run starts at 11 a.m. and the second run is at 2:30 p.m. If you want to spend more time at the mine, and perhaps walk some of the trails around the river, you can leave on the morning train and come back on the afternoon train.

The basic ticket costs remain the same as last year, with adult tickets starting at $18, Seniors $16.50 and children, $9. There are

group rates and a number of special rates, depending on whether or not you want them to supply a lunch for you when you arrive at the mine. You will want to visit their web site to see their whole listing of rates. A new ticket package is now offered that combines

the train ride with dinner and a show at Renfro Valley for groups of 10 or more.

The train ride is in open cars for a full view of the scenic forest, hills, cliffs and streams. The route drops 600 feet from Stearns to the South Fork of the Cumberland River. The route travels along Roaring Paunch Creek with its many

boulders and rapids. It also passes by the Barthel Mining Camp, a privately owned historic mining camp you can also visit while in the area.

Once at the mine you can visit the many “ghost” structures of the houses and buildings that were at the mining camp, listen to stories about each as told by recordings of persons who lived there. You can see the main entrance to the mine and cross the large coal tipple over the river and to the other side where several mine openings used to be.

Musical entertainment is provided before the train trip and at the train station at the mine. There are many pictures and a diorama of the mining town to see at the station. One of the more unusual ways to take the trip to Blue Heron Mine via the railroad is to take it one way down to the river and then take a 5 mile canoe trip to Yamacraw Bridge where a shuttle will take you back to Stearns.

Campers account for a large number of visitors to Lake Cumberland. There are numerous camping areas too. The Corp of Engineers campgrounds are, perhaps, the most modern facilities and many offer lakeside sites.

State Parks also have modern restroom and shower facilities along with special evening programs for the enjoyment of the camping, lodge and cottage communities. Private campgrounds are also close to lake facilities and

offer a variety of extra amenities and activities. The Corp of Engineers campsites require advance

reservations. The only exception to that is the Fall Creek Recreation Area which has only about 10 sites and they are occupied by the rule of first come, first served. Reservations can be made site specific at Kendall, Cumberland Point, Fishing Creek and Waitsboro by calling 1-877-444-6777 or by visiting the national reservation service at



www.reservation.gov. All the above camping areas are adjacent to day use picnic

areas, boat ramps, shower and bathroom houses, washers and dryers and playground equipment. Fishing Creek, Waitsboro, and Cumberland Point, have some next to the lake sites. Fall Creek has lake view sites. Kendall is located below the dam with some river adjacent sites.

Many people don’t realize that the Corp of Engineers allow primitive camping in designated areas and there are no charges for primitive camping. There are rules, however with regard to where you can camp, trash removal and how you leave the site. Details and a map that shows allowed primitive camping area can be accessed on by contacting the Corp Visitor Center at 606-679-6337.

All three state parks, Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, Burnside Island State Park and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, have developed campgrounds with modern shower and bathroom houses. None have lake or river side campsites, but are wooded, nicely shaded and have access to planned recreation activities and “park talks”.

Pulaski County Park is a County administered park under the guidance of the Corp of Engineers. With the lake being raised, it once again has lakeside campsites along the Fishing Creek tributary of the lake.

Private campgrounds are located in Bronston and near Alligator Dock #2. The Bronston location is called Lake Cumberland RV Park and Driving Range. It is strictly for

RV’s. In addition to the driving range it has an indoor pool. It is located at the end of Gibson Lane off Ky. 90. The campgrounds at Alligator dock has mostly RV sites but will accommodate tent camping. It is a KOA facility with recreational facilities and a swimming pool.

In its infancy, Somernites Cruise was viewed as a temporary lift in the area’s economy that after a while would diminish. Contrary to all predictions, the monthly event has grown in interest across the country and focused attention on Somerset, Kentucky, as a state recognized Classic Car Show Capital for the entire Commonwealth. Scheduled for the fourth weekend of every month, from April through October, the Somernites Cruise continues as a major tourist attraction for the Lake Cumberland Region.

For tourists, this is an added attraction to their lake activities.There is so much to do in and around Lake Cumberland, you cannot spend one, two or three weeks here and see it all or experience all that the area offers. The car shows are an example. This year’s shows are touted as better than all the rest. A major factor in popularity of the Somerset car show is the fact that it is free for participants and attenders.

What started as a one day event has grown to include a Friday night block party and mini car show in and around the downtown Somerset Justice Center, with rides for the kids, refreshment, free musical entertainment and hundreds of cars on display. Saturday morning begins with a “fun run” in which participants travel to a local place of interest in caravan. Saturday is the “Show and Shine” where more than a thousand cars are displayed in downtown Somerset. The event climaxes with a “Cruise the Strip” with participants cruising up and down U.S. 27 and hundreds or spectators lining the road wherever they can get a spot to park.

What can you expect from this year’s shows? Press releases tout this year as the best ever, with several special events connected with the car displays. Planners are putting a major event together every month. The first show this year was April 27. The next show will be May 24-25. The May show will feature “Big Daddy”, Don Garlits, who will be bringing his Swamp Drag dragster and will be signing autographs at the Friday Night Block Party and at the Saturday ”Show and Shine”.

Apple’s is located in the Somerset Mall, with an outside entrance on the northeast end of the

Our map of Lake Cumberland shows the location of 11 marinas. Planning your visit and what activities you want to enjoy may take some investigation as to what each marina offers in houseboat, small boat, and lodging rentals, restaurants and events or special activity programs. By means of this article, we will give an overview of what various amenities are offered by the marinas with the recommendation you access their individual websites for detailed information on rates and availability of their rentals. Not all marinas have houseboat rentals. While most have pontoon and fishing boat rentals, only a few have ski boat and PWD rentals. Most offer covered and open slip rentals, some only by the year while others offer half year and other short term moorage rates. Our overview includes more information on the major docks and marinas.

Burnside Marina and Beaver Creek Resort are managed by Water Way Adventures and their web address is www.waterwayadventures.com. Both locations offer houseboat rentals and moorage and small boat rentals and moorage. They have rentals of ski boats and PWCs.

Grider Hill Marina and Recreation Area, www.griderhillmarina.com is located in the southwestern part the lake. Their recreation area includes a motel, camping, a restaurant overlooking the marina and a second floor deck on the marina used for weekly live entertainment. They have houseboat rentals and moorage and small boat rentals and moorage. Check their events page for a schedule of their free

shows.State Dock, part of the Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

is, of course, adjacent to all the park’s lodging, restaurant and recreational amenities. State Dock has the largest houseboat rental fleet on the lake along with rental of the complete spectrum of small boats along with moorage. Their “events calendar” lists many special events throughout the summer. They also have a very large marine store. Get more information at www.statedock.com.

Alligator Dock #1, due to lowering the lake for dam repairs, was moved closer to the mouth of Wolf Creek. After another name change it has been bought by the owners of State Dock and is being advertised as a “sister” marina to State Dock with many new improvements.

While they have boat moorage, they have only limited small boat rentals at the present time. The main attraction is their Tiki, on the waterfront, restaurant with in door and out door dining. With a “Key West” atmosphere and menu, with such things as calamari and Mahi, Mahi sandwiches, they say they are a “destination” for people coming from other nearby docks. Jamestown Resort and Marina, LTD, faces Lake Cumberland Resort Park across the lake. They have cabin rentals, swimming pool, a large modern lodge overlooking the lake and a dock with store and snack bar with on-the-water dining. They have moorage and smasll boat rentals.

Conley Bottom Marina is located in the middle of the lake and on its South shore near Monticello. It has one of the largest houseboat moorage on the lake with also other covered slip and open slip moorage available by the year and less. They have houseboat, pontoon and small boat rentals including PWCs. They also have a large wooded campgrounds with ramp, swimming beach and camper boat moorage. Their on the water restaurant offers indoor and outdoor on the dock dining. They also have cottage rentals. Get more information at www.conleybottomresort.com.

Lee’s Ford Marina Resort is located near Nancy, Kentucky, and west of Somerset along Fishing

Creek. They have cottage rentals and house boat moorage along with small boat rentals such as pontoons, ski boats and PWCs.

They do not have houseboat rentals. One of their main attraction is their “Harbor Restaurant” overlooking the harbor, which is open all year, and offers fine dining in and out of doors at reasonable prices along with a bar and spirits. Free moorage and shuttle service is provided for from-the-water visitors to the restaurant.

Buck Creek Dock and London Boat Dock are both located at points along and near the end of the North Fork of Lake Cumberland. A Google search will give you phone number for information on them.

The Boone Forest offers recreational opportunities amid dense woodlands, towering cliffs and plunging waterfalls, with campsites, trails and vistas to add to your Lake Cumberland visit. We will give an overview of places you can visit and things you can do in the Boone Forest.

Bee Rock Recreation Area is located along Ky. 192 and the Pulaski County and Laurel County lines, This is where the lower Rockcastle River meets

the lake. There are primitive but well landscaped campgrounds on both sides of the river. There is a boat ramp on the Laurel County side of the river. Trails lead to the thunderous rapids of the Rockcastle and also up to the top of Bee Rock. Plaques detail some of the interesting history of the area. This is a truly beautiful park to visit with enjoyable trails.

Beaver Creek Wildlife Management Area and Wilderness is an 18,000

acre part of the Boone Forest located off South U.S. 27 at the Pulaski and McCreary County lines. A gravel forest service road takes you to a parking area and trailhead where you can take a loop trail to the Beaver Creek Overlook, perched high above the creek and giving you a beautiful view of the wilderness area and a nice easy walk through dense Hemlock groves and along impressive cliffs. This is a favorite destination for nature lovers who like to explore and

enjoy solitude and adventure in a distinctly remote setting. Natural Arch Recreation Area is located off U.S. 27 and

Kentucky Route 927. The main attraction, of course is the massive natural arch which can be seen from overlooks and reached by a trail that allows you to see the arch up close and be impressed with the underside of it. Nine miles of trails run through this truly scenic area. There are two large picnic shelters for groups and a large outdoor amphitheater for public use. This is a must see.

For camping in this part of the forest, there are two horse camping destinations, Barren Fork, right off U.S. 27 near Whitley City and behind the Stearns Ranger District office, and Bell Farm Horse Camp along Ky. 1363. There is also a large campground at the end of Route 1363 called Great Meadow. It does not provide for horses, but a section of that campground is open all year. Again, these sites are primitive but extremely beautiful in a deep forest setting and along Rock Creek, a popular trout fishing stream. Several trails in this area are unique with waterfalls, a large natural arch and massive cliffs. The Sheltowee Trace Hiking trail starts in Tennessee and crosses through this campground. On the way to Great Meadow Campground you pass Hemlock Grove, a beautiful picnic area.

If you want to enjoy the many trails and their overlooks in this part of the Boone Forest, a visit to the Stearns Ranger District Office north of Whitley City is recommended. There you can get up to date information and printouts detailing all

the trails in their part of the forest. One caution: Black bears have returned to Kentucky and

have expanded their territory which includes this part of the Boone Forest. They are not aggressive and rarely pose a threat to humans, but visitors should always use caution around black bears. Don’t feed the bears, dispose of litter and food trash properly and never approach a black bear, especially if she has cubs. Report bear sightings to the nearest Forest Service Office.

The warm weather is here and so now is the time to head for SomerSplash Water Park north of Somerset. SomerSplash is outstanding in its many features you can enjoy.

The park is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sundays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. There are several admission price options. The “Ride ‘N’ Slide” price of $14.95 admits you to everything in the park-all the slides, wave pool, kiddie play and lazy river. You must be at least 48” tall to qualify for that ticket.

The “Half Splash” admission of $12.95 is for guests under 48 inches tall or those wishing not to ride the large slides. It allows entry to the wave pool, kiddie play and lazy river.

“Dry Dock” price is $3 and is for those who wish to enter the park, not get into the water and just sit pool side. Children under 2 are free with an adult purchasing park admission (not including an adult Dry Dock). A half price admission is available for the “Ride ‘N’ Slide” and “Half Splash” if you enter the park after 4 p.m. The only exception to that is for July . Admission on July 6 after 4 p.m. will be $10. July 6 will be the park’s day to celebrate the Independence Day holiday with its “SomerBlast” fireworks show.

SomerSplash features include 20 acres of family fun, with one

of the longest lazy rivers in Kentucky, a 20,000 square-foot wave pool, forty-foot single and double rider tube slides and three forty-foot tall waterslides. The kiddie play pool has several water spouts and a tipping bucket. Last season a bowl slide, a speed slide and a wading pool were added. The water park is located at 1030 Kentucky Hwy 2227 (Old U.S. 27). Season passes can be purchased for $69.95 each and for next year, you can purchase pre-season tickets at a discount and with a payment plan. Groups and birthday parties can be arranged too.

The outdoor pool located outside the Somerset Family Fitness Center (old YMCA), has been open and is also being operated by the City of Somerset and SomerSplash Waterpark. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. for June and July. Admission is $5 per person. It is $2 per person if you own a SomerSplash season pass. Children age 2 and under are free.

Just south of Lake Cumberland is the nation’s newest national park. It is a 125,000 acre park that offers Lake Cumberland visitors more to see and do. Numerous hiking trails, overlooks, beautiful water falls, historic sites, campgrounds, horseback riding trails and campgrounds and even a railroad are within the park’s boundaries. The park is partly in Kentucky and partly in Tennessee with visitor centers in each state.

Attractions of the park close to Lake Cumberland include Yahoo Falls, Alum Ford, The Big South Fork Scenic Railroad, Historic Stearns and the Park’s northern Visitor Center, Blue Heron Mine, campgrounds, overlooks and the Big South Fork gorge itself. So, there is much to see and do just in the Kentucky part of the park.

The Yahoo Falls Recreation area is located off U.S. 27 and Ky Rte 700 out of Whitley City. This recreation area

has picnic facilities, but no camping. There are modern restrooms. Near the trail head to the falls there is an impressive overlook of the Big South Fork gorge and river. A little ways down the trail to the falls there is another impressive overlook of the river and gorge. The falls itself is sometimes just a trickle, but it is the second highest falls in Kentucky and the trail down to the base of the falls is awe inspiring. The trail leads you near an area of small rapids, under some cliffs and then to the climax of views—the football field size cliff overhang that surrounds the falling water. Another must see!

Farther down Ky Rte 700 is the Alum Ford river/lake access point which is also scenic and is a junction on the Sheltowee Trace trail.

One of my favorite trails, Lick Creek Trail, starts in the Boone Forest south of Whitley City and travels down to the Big South Fork and ends at the

Yamacraw Bridge on Ky. 92. It is a six mile trail more easily taken as a two-car trail, leaving a vehicle at each end. The trail comes down off a ridge along impressive cliffs and rockhouses, crosses Lick Creek several times and has a spur that takes you to Lick Creek (Hickman to some) Falls, actually the highest falls in Kentucky and with more water than Yahoo Falls.

Further down the trail you come to Princess Falls, a smaller version of Cumberland Falls, but in a pristine forest setting with a grotto in front of it. The trail continues to the Big South Fork and ends at the bridge.

The main attraction in the northern part of the park is Blue Heron Mine and surrounding trails and overlooks. The park has preserved the mining town in “ghost” structures with live recordings of people who lived in the mining town, giving their descriptions of the buildings and life there. The coal tipple

has been restored and there is a rail for carts across the river to mines on the other side. A trail on the other side of the river takes you to overlooks of the entire area. (not a short or easy hike!). On the way to Blue Heron Mine you pass the entrance to the campgrounds where modern restrooms and showers are available to campers. Also there are two overlook areas that give a bird’s eye view of the Big South Fork river rapids. A trail from the mine area takes you to Devil’s Jump, an impressive series of rapids with a high difficulty rating for canoes and kayaks.

The Big South Fork Railway gives tourists another way to get to Blue Heron Mine and enjoy their visit to the area. The railway uses the original track for getting the coal from Blue Heron mine to the coal company at Stearns.

The ride is scenic! The ride allows time to visit the mining area, includes country music entertainment and educational information about the mine.

The northern entrance to the Big South Fork National Park is Stearns,

Kentucky. Along with park information, maps, etc., and the railroad, there is a restaurant, gift shop and the old Stearns Coal and Lumber Company headquarters that has been turned into a museum.

Riders on the railroad get free entrance to the museum. Well worth the small fee, however, is the look the museum gives of life at the mines and forests of times past, moon shine stills, and all.

While visiting Lake Cumberland, you want to make the most of the time you are able to spend here. What do you decide to do? What activities are open to you? What places might you want to visit? What special activities, such as local festivals might interest you? Information on all these questions could be answered by visiting a local Visitation Center. There are several in the Lake Cumberland Area you might want to visit. Let us introduce you to them.

For Pulaski County and surrounding areas there is the Visitor Center located between Ky. 80 and old Ky. 80, at the intersection just before U.S. 27. They have an abundance of

brochures and pamphlets detailing local points of interest, festivals and personnel at the center are available to answer your questions.

The same is true for the visitor center for activities on the other side of the lake. There is a visitor center for Russell County off U.S. 127 just north of the intersection with Cumberland Parkway.

Area. Nearby is the Stearns Ranger District Office for the Daniel Boone National Forest. That visitor center has information on camping areas, horse camping and trails and foot trails. In Pulaski County there is also a Corps of Engineer’s Visitor Center location on Boat Dock Road off U.S. 27. That visitor center has interesting displays about the development of the lake and dam and has stuffed animals of the region along with interactive projects for young ones. A handicapped friendly trail outside the visitor center interprets tree species and brings you to an overlook of a tributary of the lake.

An outstanding visitor center is the one adjacent to the Fish Hatchery at Wolf Creek Dam. That visitor center has an interpretive inside walk among many species of local animals (real and stuffed), karst displays of local caves with bats, and large fish tanks showing fish from the rivers and the lake. Other displays highlight bears gathering honey, small creatures such as frogs, turtles and insects, along with a picture display of the development of Wolf Creek Dam. A stuffed black bear greets you at the entrance along with a live skunk in a cage. Runners at the hatchery treat you to seeing the development of trout for release in Kentucky rivers, with some spectacularly large species kept in special areas.

Not to be overlooked as a visitor center is the one associated with the Battle of Mill Springs near the entrance to the Mill Springs National Cemetery off Ky 80 in Nancy, Kentucky.

The visitor center outlines a route of stops to see the progression of the battle and it’s aftermath, even across the lake to the Mill Springs Mill and battlefield historic houses, the Brown-Lanier House and the Metcalfe House, both of which can be toured. The visitor center has a museum including the firearms used by Civil War soldiers.

“high risk” of failure and a lower water level was worse than reality. Rumors of a “dry lake” spread northward to the base of the “Ohio Navy,” causing many “admirals” to seek an alternate vacationland.

But that perception has changed. Insertion of a 275-foot deep, 4,000-foot-long concrete barrier wall through the earthen section of dam has stopped uncontrolled seepage that was undermining the mile-long structure. The wall was completed March 6 and reviews have shown the $594 million repair project, of a scope never before done in the world, is successful; even better than expected.

The 20-foot rise in the lake level this summer adds more than 7,000 surface-acres of water to the 35,000 acres at 680 feet, the level maintained for the past six years. Fingers of water have crept into secluded coves along the more than

1,200 miles of shoreline.The higher water level surrounds

General Burnside Island State Park, making it an island again. Boats are launching at Pulaski County Park, dry-docked since the lake has been low. The economic engine of Lake Cumberland Country is revving higher.

Lake Cumberland won’t reach its historical operating level until Summer 2014. Work is continuing at Wolf Creek Dam, specifically reducing the size of the work platform on the upstream side of the dam from 75 feet to a permanently retained 30-foot access road.

The lake will rise another 20 feet, to 723 feet above sea level, by Summer 2014. At this level, or tree line, Lake Cumberland stretches from the western part of Russell County through Pulaski County to near Corbin, a distance of 101 miles. It will return to 50,250 surface acres of water guarded by the scenic foothills of the Cumberland Mountains.

Construction of Wolf Creek Dam was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938 and the River Harbor Act of 1946 as part of a comprehensive plan to develop the Cumberland River Basin. Construction began in 1941 but because of World War II and other factors, the dam was not completed until 1951.

Are you a history buff? Whether you are or not, you will find a lot of interesting history to actually entertain you while visiting Lake Cumberland. Maybe it’s a rainy day and you don’t know what to do. Why not enjoy getting acquainted with some local history? Most is free or low cost and informative.

Monticello’s Historical Museum would be a good place to start. Right on Main Street and at Michigan Avenue, the old Breeding Hotel is the location of this award winning museum. Admission is free and hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The Breeding Hotel is in itself an interesting historical feature as it had air conditioning to all rooms before there were compressors. How? Monticello and the hotel are built over a cave system, so they opened a shaft into a cave and fanned the cooled air to all the rooms. All three floors and the basement have been developed with displays.

The basement has a karst or cave room, showing the open shaft to the cave for the cooled air along with numerous

pictures and displays on the many caves in the Wayne County Area. The main floor has a newly renovated gift shop, dioramas depicting growth of Mill Springs and the battle of Mill Springs.

One of the outstanding features of the main floor is the full-size replica of the Monticello-Burnside Stage Coach, the original of which is in the Wells Fargo Museum in Los Angeles. There is also a display of a personal carriage and many, many more things.

The 2nd and 3rd floors of the hotel were also recently renovated displaying what the rooms of the hotel looked like originally, a bridal suite, and many other rooms used for special displays such as schools in the county, fabric room with quilts, medical and dental room, Victorian Parlor, to name a few. The museum has displays on the county’s courthouses, oil boom, civil war and other war memorabilia.

The Mill Springs Battlefield Visitor Center and Museum is an especially interesting place to visit. It is located along Ky. 80 just before getting to Nancy, Ky., and is adjacent to the

Mill Springs National Cemetery. The visitor center has a gift shop, a library and a theater presentation that chronicles the events around the Battle of Mill Springs. There is a fee of $8 for adults for a pass into the museum. The pass includes tours of the Brown-Lanier House, and West-Metcalfe house on the other side of the lake. These houses were used for confederate headquarters and hospital and have been completely renovated. The pass also includes admission to special events and enactments of civil war battles and encampments when scheduled. The museum has life-size displays of civil war shelters and encampments, field hospitals, etc., along with cases of guns and weapons of that area. A car route takes you from the museum and visitor center to the battle field and

Zollicopher Park, other areas of engagements, encampments and the location where confederate troops made their escape across the river (now the lake) to entrenched battlements and positions along the bluffs of the river.

My sister is a traveler. When she visits an area, she always visits the wineries and tasting rooms. She also buys souvenir bottles for all her kids (4). Bus tour packages often include visiting local destination wineries. So, this is a big part of tourism these days. What can the Lake Cumberland Area offer to satisfy the pallets of this set of tourists? Much and becoming more each day.

First of all, let’s consider the pioneers of bringing wine and spirits to the Lake Cumberland Area. With the reductions in the tobacco industry, farmers were encouraged to develop other types of cash crops. Grapes and wine fit the picture. In Pulaski County, the beginning was Sinking Valley Winery along Ky. 461, (a gateway to Lake Cumberland). From its original location in the country it has since moved to a more visible location right off Ky. 461.

Next, Cedar Creek Winery opened off Ky. 80 east of shopville. While other farmers began growing grapes and producing wine, without having approval in their area for sales, they wholesaled their bottled wine to retail outlets. One such opened in Wayne County, along the south shore of Lake Cumberland, called Lake

Cumberland Winery and located off Ky 1275 and 2393 (Cumberland Ridge Road). That winery is 3 miles from Conley Bottom Dock and 8 miles from Monticello.

At opening it offered wines from Burkesville’s “Up the Creek Winery” and Cave Hills “Cave Hill Vinyards”. This year, they began their own vineyard offerings.

The Town of Burnside also pioneeered alcohol sales in Pulaski County by offering alcohol by the drink at bars with restaurants and for alcoholic drinks with your meal. With all this new local development, a change in Kentucky liquor sales laws, other municipalities, such as Danville and Corbin going totally “wet” with restaurant, package beer sales, and wine and spirits store sales, even on Sundays, the stage was set for a local vote for open sales in Somerset. Beer sales opened first and recently wine and spirit sales have opened at some locations. More will come.

So, visitors may no longer feel impelled to bring their booze with them, unless they find the local prices are out of reason or not competitive with what they can get at “home.” At first glance that may be the case, but experience may turn the tide.

Cultural interests beckon many visitors to Lake Cumberland. The Center For Rural Development has long contributed to appreciation for culture with stage plays, musical programs and monthly displays of works of art in its hallways and entrance. Unfortunately, most performances are scheduled during the school year and not during summer months. But visitors can still visit and view the art work on display while the building is open during the day. Also, for the summer season, the center is one of the places you can purchase tickets

for the Master Musician’s Festival in July. The festival has a broad range of cultural exposure to varied venues of musical entertainment. More on that event later.

Somerset’s old post office and later, it’s library, has added to Somerset’s cultural scene. Now known as the Carnegie Community Arts Center, the beautiful building built in l913 has been renovated to accommodate exhibits, performances, wedding receptions, shops, studios, office and a French-style market and café. It’s gift shop

offers a wide variety of items created by local artists and craftsmen such as pottery, fabrics, wood turned bowls and other hardwood products, garden décor, stained glass, paintings, unusual beautiful dolls, knit and crocheted items, home-made soaps and assorted jewelry. What would summer be like without getting a chance to swim? While Lake Cumberland doesn’t have any sandy beaches, the area is not without its choices for summer swimming fun. Swimming out of your boat or houseboat is probably the most common type of lake swimming and the lake offers plenty of coves and inlets to allow you to anchor off in a private spot and enjoy swimming and diving. The water is fine, refreshingly cool in late spring,and almost bathwater warm in midsummer.

There are a lot of swimming pool choices all around the lake. There are large Olympic size pools at both Lake Cumberland Resort State Park and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park open to the public and with small admission charges. Monticello has a public pool at its Aspire Center near Ky 90 and off Kentucky 1275. The family Fitness Center off Ky. 39 just north of Somerset has a large indoor lap pool and a therapy pool. Non-member day users can be admitted to these pools for a nominal charge. The large outdoor pool of the fitness center is now being operated by the Somerset City Park Department along with the Somerplash Water Park. The popular water park is located north of Somerset at 1030 Ky Hwy 2227 (old U.S. 27).
