Discoveries, Inventions and Innovations
of
Dr. Bogdan Maglich
Bogdan Maglich: Early Career, University of Liverpool and Bruno Pontecorvo.
Bogdan Maglich a.k.a. Maglić, started his career in nuclear physics at age 19 as assistant to Prof. Pavle Savitch, the co-discoverer of nuclear fission who, together with Irene Joliot –Curie, first observed the fission fragmentlanthanum, when bombarding uranium with neutrons at the Institute Curie du radium in Paris in 1938. Savitchreturned to Belgrade, Yugoslavia after WWII and built Institute for nuclear sciences in Vincha, with the supportof French physicists and of Yugoslavia’s President Tito, whose telecommunications officer Savitch wasthroughout the partisan guerilla warfare 1941-5. It is still a mystery why Joliot and Savitch did not share theNobel Prize with Hahn and Strassman who confirmed uranium fission in 1939, as discussed in 1938.
Maglich’s first published paper reporting his methods for neutron production with 1.4 MeV acceleratorpublished in ATOMICS, London in 1954 although he never submitted it to the publisher. It was reproduced byATOMICS from an internal report in the Institute’s Bulletin which had been sent to publishing houses in Europewith permission to republish.
At that time, Vincha Institute had its first American visitor from the US Atomic Energy Commission, MIT’sProfessor Bernard Feld. A Manhattan project alum, Feld offered MIT research assistantship to Maglich, but hehad to decline the tantalizing offer! Maglich was already admitted as student for doctorate at the University ofLiverpool, where the largest cyclotron in Europe was just built. Bruno Pontecorvo then considered number oneEuropean experimental nuclear physicist and personal friend of Savitch of long standing, had just beenappointed professor at University of Liverpool and would be Maglich’s thesis advisor.
When Maglich arrived in London, on his way to Liverpool (1954), all newspapers had on their cover pages“Atom spy escapes to Russia!” It turned out to be Maglich’s professor-to-be Pontecorvo.
Maglich obtained M.Sc. at Liverpool six months later and arrived to MIT in January 1956. First time he metPontecorvo at an International conference on High Energy Physics in Dubna, near Moscow as a member ofCERN delegation in 1964; and several times since. Pontecorvo was not an atomic spy. He had worked onnuclear reactors only and had no access to nuclear weapons in England or Russia. Pontecorvo’s decision todefect to Russia was made on ideological grounds when the McCarthy hearings reached Britain. After Stalin’sdeath, Pontecorvo was offered a faculty position when visiting Italy, but he returned home to Moscow wherehis fellow Russian physicists called him “the man who has everything.”

Congratulations From U.S. President Kennedy
“Although Bogdan Maglić originated the planfor this search, and pushed through themeasurements by himself, he graciously
insisted that the paper announcing his discovery(65) Should be coauthored by three of us who
had developed the chamber, the beam, and theanalysis program that made it possible.”
Luis Alaverz, Nobel Lecture,Science 165, 1071 (1969)
