EXPERIENCE VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH, WPI, 2016-present.

VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH, AD INTERIM, WPI, 2014-2016.

Responsibilities include the overall operations and non-financial services that support the

research enterprise at WPI, including the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office for Intellectual

Property and Innovation, and the university wide research centers and institutes. The VPR

provides the vision and leadership to enhance faculty research efforts and increase WPI's

externally sponsored funding. The VPR serves as the chief research officer and thus supports

the Institutional Review Boards (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee IACUC,

Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and the Conflict Management Committee.

Co-led the effort to develop and implement the research strategic plan for WPI.

Reorganized the OSP, hired staff and introduced an eRA solution.

Organized the Conflict Management Committee and provided support for its activity.

Supported IRB and IACUC activities and obtained AAALAC re-accreditation.

Developed joint research programs with the University Massachusetts Medical School.

Joined national organizations to raise the visibility of research, innovation and

entrepreneurship activities at WPI.

Joined national consortia to help faculty secure research funding.

Represented WPI with corporations and external organizations.

Provided operational support for the hiring of over 230 research scientist, engineers,

postdocs and non-degree students engaged in research at WPI.

Member of the President’s Management Council.

DEPARTMENT HEAD, Department of Mathematical Sciences, WPI, 2003-2013.

Responsibilities included faculty recruiting, faculty development, curriculum, undergraduate

and graduate recruiting, scheduling, accreditation, budget development and management

(approx. $5M/year) for a department of over 40 faculty and staff members.

Recruited new faculty members, oversaw faculty development, conducted promotion

and tenure reviews.

Recruited successfully for the first chaired position in the department.

Supported faculty research; external funding doubled from $.7M to $1.5M.

Successfully raised the number of postdoctoral scholars from 2 to 7, number of TAs

from 6 to 18, and the number of Ph.D. students from 2 to 15.

Raised the external and internal visibility of the Department through lecture series,

open houses, newsletter, support for faculty travel, membership in national institutes.

Developed two new Professional M.S. programs in Financial Mathematics and

Industrial Mathematics, and secured $600K start-up funding.

Developed a 5-year BS/PSM program, with admission form the 12th grade.

Collaborated on the development of two multidisciplinary M.S. programs in

Bioinformatics and Data Sciences.

Developed alumni and donor relations; initiated and participated in fund raising

activities with the Development Office staff.

Developed an Advisory Board formed by chairs and deans from other universities, and

representatives of professional societies and corporations.

Expanded facilities, labs and office space.

FOUNDING DIRECTOR, Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (CIMS), WPI, 1997-2003.

The Center was designed as a means to integrate projects in mathematics and statistics from the

corporate world. CIMS has provided a coherent format for developing over 130 industrial

undergraduate, graduate and faculty projects with more than 60 corporate customers, and

attracted significant funding from the National Science Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, the

GE Foundation, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Developed connections with corporations with support from the Corporate Relations

and the Alumni Relations Offices.

Secured funding for CIMS from corporations, foundations, NSF and WPI.

Developed an Advisory Board formed by corporate R&D managers and alumni.

Developed and cultivated industrial contacts.

Developed project topics, negotiated the project fees and the non-disclosure and

intellectual property agreements.

FOUNDING PRESIDENT, National Professional Science Master’s Association, 2007 -2008 and

President, 2012.

Developed, and was elected the founding President of the National Professional Science

Master's Association (NPSMA); served two terms on its Board of Directors. Started with

$.5M support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the NPSMA is a membership association of

universities, faculty and PSM students and alumni that promotes and supports the growth and

development of Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree programs, currently over 300 in

over 125 institutions.

Established NPSMA as a 501(c)(3) association and hired its first Executive Director

and staff member.

Developed with the Board of Directors the strategic vision and plan.

Collaborated with the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and the regional associations

(NAGS, MAGS, WAGS) to promote the PSM degree.

Represented the NPSMA on the CGS PSM Advisory Board.

Collaborated with deans, provosts and presidents of universities to help establish new

Conducted evaluation of new PSM programs for state universities (NJ, NY, MN, UT).

Co-organized the NPSMA National conferences and organized best practices and

Heads (NASH), National Council of State Legislators (NCLS), on PSM related topics.

E. K-12 Outreach Activities

2010-2012 Organized the Advanced Mathematics Program for Middle School Students, WPI, a summer

program for students grades 7-9.

2004-2008 Focus on Mathematics project with Boston University and U. Mass Lowell to develop

partnerships with school districts in MA for teachers’ professional development activities and

project fairs for students.

2002-2005 Organized the Mathematics in Industry Institute for Teachers, WPI, providing training for real-

world applications of mathematics and their incorporation in the curriculum for 60-80

teachers/year with support from SIAM and the GE Foundation.
