SHANGHAI INTRODUCTION Shanghai is an open city on the coast and a famous historical and cultural city, which is a gate to the Yangtze River delta. It is a municipality under the direct jurisdiction of the Central Government, the largest economic and trade center, a comprehensive industrial base and the leading port in China.

In the 19th century, Shanghai was only a small fishery town. However, due to its good harbor position, Shanghai developed rapidly and even became one of the foreign trading ports of China. Shanghai was once the financial center of the Far East. After reform and open policy, since 1990, Shanghai started to progress vigorously, and then has become Chinas biggest economic center and the world’s biggest trading harbor. The municipal government is working towards building Shanghai into a modern metropolis and into a world economic, financial, trading and shipping center.

CLIMATE: In Shanghai, weather during November to April is the coldest and temperatures range between 3.5ºC to 13.7ºC (38.3ºF to 56.7ºF). Weather in May, June, September and October is cooling, ranging between 18.6ºC to 23.5ºC (65.5ºF to 74.3ºF). Climate in July and August starts to turn hot and temperature can go up to 28ºC (82.4ºF) or above

HISTORY: About 6,000 years ago, the western part of today’s Shanghai dried up into land and its eastern part became a piece of land about 2,000 years ago. Shanghai began as Huating County, an administrative district established in 751 AD. The county, located in an area known today as Songjiang District, had its boundary reaching today’s Hongkou District in the north, Xiasha in the east and the coast in the south. In 991 AD, Shanghai Town was set up in the county. During the 1260-1274 periods, the town evolved into an important trading port. On August 19th, 1291 during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the then central government approved the establishment of Shanghai County in this area. Hence this day became the anniversary of the founding of the city of Shanghai. In the 16th century (or the middle period of the Ming Dynasty), Shanghai became the national center of textile & handicraft industry. In 1685, Shanghai set up its first customs office. After the Opium War in the mid-19th century, Shanghai served as a major trading port and gateway to inland China. With invasion of the big powers from across the world, Shanghai was then turned into a semi-feudal and semi-colonial city for about 100 year. On May 27, 1949, the People’s Liberation Army of the Communist Party of China took control of Shanghai and since then Shanghai has undergone a historic transformation.

ZHONGSHAN PARK

The park located on Changning Road was built in 1941. It’s a blend of English and Chinese gardening elements. It covers a total area of 214,200 square meters, including 118,600 square meters of trees, 12,200 square meters of water and 36,900 square meters of lawn. It supports over 30,000 trees ranging across 260 different species as well as various flowers like peonies, cherry blossoms, osmanthus flowers and roses.

After undergoing a number of renovations, today the park boasts cleverly designed scenic paths winding through a hilly natural landscape. It manages to brilliantly integrate the appearance of a natural European courtyard with that of a Chinese classical garden. Near the center of the park, visitors can find a marble terrace surrounded by classical western style bollards and railings. Behind the terrace are hedges arranged to form a natural boundary, and just to the west you may find cypress plants growing up to 10 meters high, giving the terrace a truly majestic and elegant air.

With a spacious lawn just in front of the terrace, chairs can be arranged for a variety of performances and events. Stepping just outside of Zhongshan Park, you will notice that a thriving business area surrounds you, with such places as Milan Square, Sunning Shopping Center, Metro Town Mall, Cloud Nine Shopping Mall, and the Multi-Media Mall. “M

Shanghai’s Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street sets an exemplary model for Asia’s shopping scene. It’s positioned for the middle-end and high-end brands and is visited by both the locals and visitors alike.

The “Big Four” are can’t-misses: the Shanghai No.1 Department Store, Yong An Company, Shanghai Fashion Company, and the Shanghai First Food Chain Development Company. The well-established Shanghai No. 1 Department Store stands right where Tibet Middle and Nanjing East Road converge. In its previous incarnation as Daxin Company before 1949, the department store was the moust illustrious building on Nanjing East Road. Although today it’s no longer a symbol of chic and trends, it’s still paradigmatic of Shanghai’s commercial culture.

NANJING ROAD PEDESTRIAN STREET

It’s quite an experience to cruise through this 1200-meter pedestrian street paved with colored bricks and stones, with pedestrian traffic flowing irresistably and sightseeing trains trundling through small stalls and boutique shops. This is one of the best places where one can savor up Shanghai’s signature modern metropolitan style, with the rickshaws, incense shops, and classic cigarette ads being a thing of past.

Stroll eastwards from Henan Road to Shanghai’s most celebrated attraction: The Bund. You feel you are no longer in the 21st century and are transported back in time; you feel you landed in Charles Dickens’ London seen only in photos. Narrow streets, tall buildings, grey walls, high ceilings, and pointed roofs - everything has a story to tell. In the glow of the setting sun, the Bund exudes the unique charms of the 30’s and 40’s of the last century.

SHANGHAI LOCAL FOODShanghai cuisine is popular style of Chinese food. In a narrow sense, Shanghai cuisine refers only to what is traditionally called Benbang cuisine (local cuisine) which originated in Shanghai; in a broad sense, it refers to complex and developed styles of cooking under profound influence of those of the surrounding provinces - Jiangsu and Zhejiang -. It takes “color, aroma and taste” as its elements like other Chinese regional cuisines, and emphasizes in particular the use of seasonings, the quality of raw materials and original flavors.

Shanghai hairy crabThe Shanghai hairy crab has been considered a gourmet delicacy in eastern China and Shanghai for hundreds of years. The hairy crab, also known as the Chinese mitten crab, is so named for its trademark furry glove-like large pincers. The smallish crab - no bigger than the size of an average person’s palm - is native to the coastal estuaries of eastern Asia, from Korea in the north to the Fujian province of China in the south. The crab is eaten in the Autumn, during the ninth and tenth months of the Chinese lunar calendar (approximately October to December): the female crab roe ripens in the ninth month, and the males in the tenth, and it is this silky, egg-yolk orange crab roe that is so hankered after. The female crabs are slightly smaller in size than the males, and the roe is of a brighter color. It is the hairy crabs from Yangcheng Lake, a freshwater lake northeast of the city of Suzhou in the Jiangsu Province, that are the most coveted. The hairy crabs from Yangcheng Lake are often exported to Shanghai and Hong Kong, and high-profit foreign markets.

Wang Bao He is one of the best places to eat hairy crab in Shanghai.

Lion head meatballs Another very popular dish is Lion head meatballs. The name derives from the shape of the meatball which is supposed to resemble the head of the lion and the cabbage (or other vegetables), which is supposed to resemble the lion’s mane. Usually, there are two varieties served on the table: the white (or plain), and the red (cooked with soy sauce). The plain variety is usually stewed or steamed with napa cabbage. The red variety can be stewed with cabbage or cooked with bamboo shoots and tofu derivatives. Lion head meatballs might not be as big as a lion’s head, but they are delicious anyway, with indulgent crab meat and a creamy texture. The delicate, porky nuances of these meatballs are quite irresistible with lots of rice.

Yangchun NoodlesNoodles are a delicious and famous food in China, and have a very long history. Noodles mean longevity in Chinese culture, which makes them very popular in China. They have become many Chinese people’s staple food. The story of the name: The tenth Chinese lunar month is called little yangchun, and it is a local custom to call the number “ten” yangchun. When these noodles first appeared in Shanghai, their price was ten fen, so people called them yangchun noodles and that name is still used.Yangchun noodles are also called clear soup noodles, as they are thin noodles in a clear soup. Scented scallion oil is added to the noodles to make them smooth and tasty. They are highly nutritious, containing protein and various vitamins. Tasting yangchun noodles is recommended during your Shanghai tour.

Nanxiang Steamed BunsNanxiang Steamed Pork Dumplings (Nanxiang xiaolongbao) are a traditional snack of NanxiangTownship in Shanghai’s suburbs and now can be found all over Shanghai.

These dumplings are made with a thin skin of dough and stuffed with seasoned minced pork. The dumplings are then steamed in a bamboo steamer. Note that these dumplings are wrapped and sealed differently than other dumplings like jiaozi. We recommend taking a bite to let the juices cool. Otherwise, the juices could burn your tongue or spilt out on you. Then one can dip the dumpling into the dark Chinese vinegar provided to cool the dumpling to an appropriate temperature.
