Law

Date: 25 June 2018

Number of places: 6 teams of 6

Through a series of mock negotiations concerning the situation facing the Maldives, students will consider the role of international law and politics in resolving the legal question of what happens when a State disappears because of rising sea levels brought about by climate change. Should the State be able to set-up elsewhere? Should it be given part of the territory within an existing country or might it have to learn to live within the sovereignty of an existing country? Who is responsible, and who should pay for relocation? The students will decide.

Creative Writing

Date: 25 June 2018

Number of places: 5 teams of 4

As the oldest form of recorded narrative, stories have been told with images and words for thousands of years. The medium is more popular than ever thanks to its influence on popular TV shows and films, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn more about how a comic book is written – from a graphic novel writer who’s worked in the industry for over fifteen years – now is your chance. You will be shown the basics of sequential art storytelling, with the theory supported by examples of professionally published work from the author’s own portfolio. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be challenged to create your very own short comic book tale – and discuss your work with someone who’s worked on everything from Star Trek to Rugrats!

Product Design

Date: 28 February 2018

Number of places: 5 teams of 4

Design Thinking is an integral tool employed within the creative process; students are invited to take part in an activity which will explore concept possibilities through quick idea generation in descriptive and visual ways and then plan and produce quick and ‘dirty’ prototypes which communicate selected ideas to form the basis of identified design directions.

This will make use of analogue methods in communicating ideas rapidly and effectively and will enhance presentation and working in partnership as a design process. Final prototypes can be revere-engineered into digital formats for 3D printing.

Interactive Design

Date: 28 February 2018 29 June 2018

Number of places: 5 teams of 4

Using the Ototo board to power your imagination, students are encouraged to make music from anything. Whether musically minded or not, students can create new ways of interacting with sound, sensors and electronics.

The Ototo board is a circuit board synthesiser when connected to conductive material can turn any touch into a sound without the need of coding or soldering electronics. Students are able to make physical musical objects that reflect the sound whilst the interaction should make playing the musical object(s) intuitive.

No prior programming knowledge is required, just imagination and curiosity in how to make something completely unexpected.

The DNA present in our cells is responsible for encoding every part of our body. Changes within our DNA code is responsible for differences in how we look and act and has recently been linked to whether we develop certain illnesses and diseases. During this workshop, students will work in teams in our high-tech science labs to see who can extract the most DNA. We will also explain how identifying DNA variants linked to certain diseases can help us create new medicines to treat them. The day will culminate with prizes being awarded to the team who extracted the most pure DNA.

Journalism

Date: 26 June 2018

How do we get our stories across in a creative and engaging way on the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter? #MOJODayatLSJ will see the students working with lecturers to produce engaging and informative content to tell these local stories on social media.

These short films, infographics packages and pieces to camera will be incorporated into a television bulletin using our green screen studio, so students can see their end product from start to finish. The final work will be uploaded to LSJ News – the School’s online news output, and shared on social media of course!

The aim is to give students a taster of Journalism at the University of Lincoln, and show how we are engaging new audiences and technologies to enhance the national and international reputation of Journalism at Lincoln.

The aim of this challenge is for small teams of students to work with robots to see how they can overcome some of these problems. The robots have a range of sensors that will help them to see the world around them.
