The Indians were the first to make an attempt

towards the discovery of atom in the early 6th

century BCE. The Bhagvad Gita mentions ‘anu’

or anor’ which is sanskrit for ‘atom’. But the

main philosophy of most of the philosophers

such as Dharmakriti was that matter is made up

of 4 elements- fire, earth, water and air.

The periodic table of the chemical

elements is a tabular display of the chemical

elements. Its invention is generally credited

to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in

1869[1], who intended the table to illustrate

recurring trends in the properties of the

elements. The layout of the table has been

refined and extended over time, as new

elements have been discovered, and new

theoretical models have been developed to

explain chemical behavior.
