Discussion Director Your role is to develop a list of 10 questions that your group might want to discuss about this part of the book. You need to help others in your group talk about the ‘main idea’ in the reading and help them share their ideas, thoughts and feelings. You can take notes as you read as this will help you write your questions. Here are a few ideas, however, make sure you come up with questions of your own. What was going through your mind as you read this section? Did anything in this section of the book surprise you? Predict something that you think will happen next… How did you feel while reading this part of the book What are the most important ideas in this section Did any of the characters change in this part of the story? What caused them to change? How are you different from one of the characters? Explain. If you could trade places with one of the characters, which one would it be and why? Did your reading remind you of any real-life experiences?

Discussion DirectorYour role is to develop a list of 10 questions that your group might want to discuss about this part of the book.

You need to help others in your group talk about the ‘main idea’ in the reading and help them share their ideas, thoughts and feelings.

You can take notes as you read as this will help you write your questions.

Discussion Director

Here are a few ideas: ! How did you feel whilst reading this part of

book? ! Can someone summarise briefly what

happened? ! Did your reading remind you of any real-life

experiences?

Character CaptainYour role is to share observations about the main character or characters.

Select two main characters then:

- use adjectives to describe at least 4 characteristics of each character

- draw a picture of each character - try and find a few characteristics that

both characters share and represent this in a Venn Diagram.

- you may like to support your ideas with an example taken from your book.

Character Captain

Connector

Your role is to find connections between the text your group is reading to yourself, other texts and the world around us.

Create a table in your book.

This means connecting the reading to:

Yourself: • are there similarities to your own life • have you experienced something similar? • do the characters remind you of someone?

Text: • have you read a book that is similar? • have you seen a movie that is similar? • does the plot, setting, characters remind you of another

text?

World: • has an event in the book happened locally, nationally

or globally? • is the setting somewhere you have been to?

Illustrator MapperYour role is to draw a picture related to the reading. It can be a sketch, cartoon, diagram or flowchart.

You need to draw a picture of a scene from the book.

Your drawing must be a full page. Write a brief description about your drawing.

During discussion time, you will: - share your picture with your group and ask

group members to guess how your picture relates to the text

- then share your picture and what the picture means and how it relates to you or the text

Illustrator/ Mapper

Your role is to draw a picture related to the reading. It can be a sketch, cartoon, diagram or flowchart.

You can draw a picture of: ! a scene in the book ! a picture of how the reading makes you feel ! something the reading reminds you of.

During discussion time, you can: ! share your picture with the group and ask

group members to guess how your picture relates to the text

! tell them what the picture means and how it relates to you or the text

Plot TwisterImagine you are the author of the text you are reading.

Your role as the plot twister is to change a part of the section /chapters you have read so far.

You may decide to change: • a character • a scene • a setting • a decision • a problem

Write down the new plot and explain why you have changed this part. This must be a full page of writing.

Passage Picker

Your role is to locate 4 sections of the text that you think your group would like to hear read aloud. This can be a page or paragraph.

The idea is to help people remember some of the sections of the text that might be interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling or important.

You decide who in your group reads aloud the passages or paragraphs you have chosen.

Write down the location of the passage (Chapter 5, page 32, paragraph 3) and name of person to share the reading and why you have chosen this passage in full sentences. This can be in a table format.

Possible reasons for choosing a passage to share: - well written - confusing - interesting - surprising - important to text

Literary Luminary

Your role is to locate a few special sections of the text that you think your group would like to hear read aloud. The idea is to help people remember some of the sections of the text that might be interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling or important. You decide which passages or paragraphs are worth hearing and then write plans for how they should be shared. You can read passages aloud by yourself, nominate someone else to read them or read silently as a group. Possible reasons for choosing a passage to share: ! well written ! confusing ! interesting ! surprising ! important to text

Word Wizard

Your role is to be on the lookout for a few important words in the passages that you have read. Look for: ! words that are puzzling or unfamiliar ! words that you think others may find difficult

You may also find familiar words that stand out somehow in the reading. For example: ! words that are repeated a lot ! words that are used in an unusual way

Once you have found these words, you could: ! try and guess the meaning from the context ! find a dictionary definition ! make a list of synonyms and antonyms ! write the words in new sentences

- Estimate - try and guess the meaning from the context - Dictionary Definition - find a dictionary definition - Location - Write the location of the word for example

and antonyms - In Context - write the words in a full sentence
