FROM THE CHAIRMAN

www.girton.vic.edu.au

It was my pleasure recently to appoint two new directors to the Girton Grammar School Board.

The Board is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the school including oversight of the School’s Mission and Values, Master Plan and Strategic Plan. The Board also has responsibilities with regard to financial oversight of the school, especially in relation to the fee structure and the expansion of school buildings and facilities.

The Board now has 11 members bringing with them a range of professional skills that will support the school in upholding its core values and delivering a first rate education to Girton students.

I am delighted to introduce the school community to Ms Sally-Anne Ross and Mr David Jemmett. Ms Ross and Mr Jemmett are current parents at the school, bringing with them an understanding of the school community and its needs. Both Board members have previous Board experience and a range of skills in senior strategic business roles.

Ms Ross has a professional background and university qualifications in Marketing and Business Administration, most recently holding senior positions in the National Australia Bank as Group Head of Community Investment and Senior Group Adviser of Corporate Social Responsibility. Ms Ross is currently on the Board of Bendigo Safe Community Forum, Lifeline Australia (Central Victoria & Loddon Mallee) and Bendigo Kangan Institute.

Mr Jemmett is the Chief Operating Officer at Southern Stockfeeds Pty Ltd. He has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture) from Melbourne University and has held directorships and executive positions in several agricultural organisations. Mr Jemmett’s prior professional capacity includes Managing Director in a multinational animal feed business, and Senior Trader in a privately owned multinational commodity trading company.

I look forward to working with our newest Board members and with existing members to deliver the educational experience that our school community has come to expect from an outstanding school.

Mr Robert Ketterer Chairman of the Board

FROM THE HEADMASTER

www.girton.vic.edu.au

When our Year 12 students leave the School for the final time, to prepare for their VCE examinations, it always leaves a hole in the school that is difficult to fill.

Finishing school is an important milestone in life and celebrating the moment helps young people to achieve a certain level of self-actualisation. The acknowledgement of milestones helps young people to grow, to change, and to move on, which is exactly what we prepare students for through their educational journey at Girton.

One of my favourite moments of the Year 12 final day celebrations is the lighting of candles (Luceat Lux Vestra) by each student during the Valedictory Thanksgiving Service at the Uniting Church in Forest Street. This is a symbolic gesture, reflecting the sentiment and lyrics of the School song, which asks students to “take our torch and hold it high.”

Our graduating students are well aware of the support and sacrifices that their families make to get them to the end of their school journey. It was wonderful to see gratitude and appreciation reflected in the lunch and final assembly that the students enjoyed with their families.

I wish all Year 12 students the very best of luck for the VCE examinations and I look forward to the formal Valedictory Dinner that will take place on 24th November.

At the other end of the School journey, our Junior School students delighted audiences last week with a spectacular performance of The Lion King. No one can roar, stomp, prowl, sing and dance like beasts from the African Savannah, quite like 180 enthusiastic Junior School students.

The show was a great credit to Mrs Mandy Ellison, Junior School Drama teacher and Director of the show, and all of the team who surrounded her with support, from making props to publicity and everything in-between. The students put on three evening shows and a matinee performance for visiting kindergarten children and I thank parents and teachers for supporting the children during such a busy rehearsal and performance schedule.

Congratulations to the students who sat the national Science Olympiad examinations with 6,000 other science students around the country. The participating students took it upon themselves to prepare for this national competition and some outstanding results were achieved.

Excellent results were also achieved last week at the Loddon Mallee Regional Finals in Basketball and Table Tennis. The Year 7 Girls Basketball team and the Boys Table Tennis team both won their respective Finals and will now go on to compete in the School Sports Victoria State Final in Melbourne on 21st November.

Finally, congratulations to the TEDx Student Committee who recently ran a public event in the Black Box theatre. Students were assigned to host each of the six external guest speakers who felt warmly welcomed by the Committee and fluently introduced by their student hosts. The event provided students with a wonderful opportunity to experience the running of a professional event by being involved in all aspects of event management on the day and in the months leading up to the event.

SUMMER DRESSES

It has been brought to our attention that there may be an issue with a batch of the girls summer dresses supplied by Bolton’s.

Some of the new dresses have a colour fast fault causing the pink colouring to run into the white collar.

If you have purchased one of the new summer dresses and notice this fault, please contact Bolton’s Office National on 5440 5600 or call in to see them to advise the batch number. The batch number can be found on the side tag at the bottom. The fault is currently being investigated and Bolton’s will be in touch with parents directly once a solution has been found.

GIRTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL

& FRIENDSASSOCIATION

PARENTSGIRTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL PARENTS’ AND FRIENDS’ ASSOCIATION

The 2018 Girton Fair will be held on Sunday the 22nd of April next year, with plenty of excitement, good food and some fresh attractions.

If your family has a wholesale or retail business, a passion for craft or a great idea for a fun activity, we invite you to consider taking a pop-up shop to add to the atmosphere on the day.

The Girton Fair, now held every second year, generates funds to support major purchases by the school, for our students. In the past, funds raised have bought grand pianos for our wonderful Music Department and marquees for use at swimming and athletics carnivals and other school events.

Next year - the school’s 25th anniversary - will mean the 2018 Girton Fair is even more of a celebration and we would encourage you to take part, either through a stall or helping in the lead up.

Space for our pop-up marketplace is limited so make sure you flag your interest now, without obligation.

For further information, or to reserve a spot for your pop-up shop, please contact Aileen Berry (President) or Paula Saxon (Secretary) through Girton Parents and Friends at ([email protected]), or come along to our next meeting in Morey 07 on Tuesday, November 7th at 5.30pm.

FROM THE HEAD OFJUNIOR SCHOOL

I would like to thank those parents, family and friends who came along to support our Junior School students as they presented Lion King Junior. Each year our Year Two, Four

and Six students work for months learning their lines, stage movement and dance routines so that they can perform for us. This year, as with the last few years, it was an extravaganza of drama, colour and costumes. Our students performed to 3 sold out evening shows and put on an additional matinee performance for some of our local kindergartens.

Giving our students performance experiences is an important pillar of a Girton Junior School education. Every class begins their Drama and Music education from the Preparatory year with specific lessons each week. In Year Two they begin lessons in Strings and in Year Three they begin to sing in the choir. While it is sometimes daunting at first, it quickly becomes a normal part of school life. This is the same with the Junior School Production. The thought of being on stage and performing in front of an audience of 300 to 400 people is an experience that would make many of us break out in a cold sweat, but for our Junior School students, it is a normal part of the school program. They begin as part of the ensemble cast for one night in Year Two and Four and are then on every night in Year Six. Nerves are quickly replaced by the excitement of performing and then the satisfaction and sense of achievement when it is all over. These are experiences that the students will remember for a lifetime and I sincerely thank the dedicated Junior School Staff who give so much of their time to make this such a successful experience.

YEAR 2 CAMP

We were on the bus. I was really excited to go to camp. I sat next to Julia. When we got to Camp Curumbene we had a tour and put bags in the rooms. After that we started rotations. My favourite was initiatives. We had to work as teams. At night time, we watched a movie called Bedtime Stories. I thought camp was amazing.

Freya Sampson (2Jo)

I felt really excited because we were going to camp. I was wiggling in my seat. When we got to camp, we had recess and I sat with all my friends. We were told who was in our cabins. I got everyone I wanted in my cabin, they were all my friends. I got a top bunk. After that we did some activities and went into groups and we did two activities. My group did iniatives and ropes. Iniatves was fun – we kept falling off all the activities. In ropes course, I was Julia’s partner. We had to take turns for each activity. I went on the activity first. We had cabin time before dinner to make our beds. Then it was dinner time we had spaghetti and dessert was jelly with strawberry mousse and sprinkles. On Friday our cabin was awake early. We packed the rooms and had breakfast. We had cereal, toast and juice. After breakfast there were two more activities. Phoebe and I finished orienteering first. In the afternoon we came back to school. I thought camp was great.

Blood on the Southern Cross

On the freezing night of Thursday the 19th of October at 9:30 pm, Girton Year Five students, teachers and some public were getting ready to watch the Blood on the Southern Cross. Girton watched it because the humanities unit is based on the Eureka Stockade and Rebellion.

The first thing we did was walk into this big theatre that had red and super cushiony chairs. While we were waiting for the clip to start,

Georgia, Lilyth and I counted all the lights in the room. I quickly gave up though. All of a sudden the six projectors flickered on and the movie started. The movie gave us an idea of what really happened in picture form and I liked it because there was a picture of what it looked like. We didn’t have to imagine it.

After the movie was over we went to the spot where we had done some gold panning earlier in the day. There were lots of sounds and

lights throughout this section of the show. At one point the noises and sound effects made it sound like a miner was drowning in a mine. I found that a bit creepy. When the show ended we got onto this tram like bus to go to the amphitheatre.

When we walked into the amphitheatre it was so warm and toasty. I was a bit annoyed when the doors opened because suddenly it was freezing! The background was pretty cool though. There were lots of sounds and lights and the

effects looked very realistic. At one point there was a hydraulic stockade. I thought it was great until there were some very loud gun shots. I actually blocked my ears.

I thought it was a great show because it was so realistic and informative. I definitely recommend that you go watch it if you’re at Sovereign Hill.

The Lolly Shop: I walk into the shop, I hear lots of speaking. As I walk slowly into the shop, I get squished into the crowd. I feel very claustrophic, I finally make it through the crowd and quickly buy my lollies. I make it out of the shop and say to myself ‘ahhh fresh air’. I sit down on the concreate sidewalk and eat my raspberry drops ‘ YUM, their so good, I haven’t had these in ages’.

Gold Mine Tour: Excited and vervously I listen to the safetly rules. The man said no torches etc but I brought my torch anyway just in case and put it in my pocket. I hop in the really slow rollercoaster. As we go down it gets darker and darker until it is pitch black. I hold my hand on my torch just in case. We arrive at the bottom of the mine, I can finally see light and it is very cold and I can hear water dripping from the roof. We get a tour around the mine and watch a short movie for 4 minutes. We walk back to the rollercoaster and hop on. We arrive on the land and I feel much relief.

JUNIOR SCHOOL PRODUCTION

Congratulations to all of the students from Years Two, Four and Six who have just completed their performance season of the Junior School Production 2017, Disney’s Lion King Junior. After many months of rehearsals both during Drama and Music classes, lunchtimes and after school, we finally transformed the John E. Higgs Hall into an African Savannah for three sold out evening performances and one matinee performance for local kindergarten children last week. I am very proud of the achievement of all of our students, who developed their ability to create and sustain character in confident

performance. During production week the students were exemplary in their commitment, effort, maturity and team work. On behalf of the production team: myself, Mrs Laura Dusseljee, Mrs Jenny Geyer, Mrs Georgiana Rice and Mrs Kristie Woodward, I thank the students, parents and staff who have sent their kind and generous appreciation messages following the final performance. Thanks also to Anita Scott from Scotts’ Costumes and Mascot Hire, who once again, provided a fabulous array of African colors, patterns and stunning character costumes. I have extended my many

other thankyous to everyone involved in other forums, but would once again like to thank the Headmaster, Mr Maruff and Head of Junior School Mr Don Thompson, for their unwavering support of the Performing Arts at Girton Grammar. In our post-production weeks, the students are asked to reflect on what they have learned from being part of the school production process. Their comments so far indicate the value of the production far exceeds the skill of confidently performing to an audience. Whilst this is something many students acknowledge as being a major skill achieved, other skills identified include ‘feeling supported and included in a big team’, ‘the ability to express myself without fear of judgement’, ‘learning how to set small goals to improve performance’, ‘recognising and appreciating the strengths and abilities of other students’, ‘the powerful feeling of pride in myself and the whole cast’. Our Year Six students were delighted to be invited to perform ‘The Circle of Life’ one more time at the Headmaster’s Assembly in Senior School on Thursday November 2nd. Please enjoy some of the beautiful photos taken by Mrs Kristen Beever who produced the fantastic publicity materials including the posters, display banners and program. Thank you to my wonderful colleagues for the many hours of dedication and commitment that led up to performance week. Thank you to all the parents who assisted in any way, particularly in the set painting weekend! But most of all, I thank the students for their trust, their willingness to challenge themselves beyond their comfort zone and their ability to believe in themselves to present a timeless story on stage.

AUSTRALASIAN PACIFIC FINAL

On Thursday the 26th of October, twenty Girton students flew to Adelaide to participate in the Australasian Pacific Final in Tournament of Minds.

We arrived, ready to be challenged in problem solving, performing and teamwork, after winning the state competition in three secondary school categories: Social Sciences, Engineering Mathematics and Language Literature. Each of the categories entails being given a problem

riddle solving, cart racing and badge swapping. Trading Victorian badges for badges from New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam or from around Australia. Through this exercise friends were made, knowledge was gained and familiar faces from previous years were once again recognised. We had a fantastic time, getting to know people from other states that we thought would be only our worthy, but isolated and unknown competition.

After being sent to our lockdown rooms on the Saturday morning, an hour late, we dug into the new problems with ambition and a goal to solve and overcome any hurdles that came our way. The challenges were difficult. Each Girton team was successful and sound in their solutions. Engineering Mathematics (One of the four disciplines, including Social Science, Language Literature and Applied Technology) had to build a life size, relocatable, sustainable tent from limited materials, as well as six other tent models for a nomadic lifestyle. Language Literature solved the problem of creating a new word to be added to the dictionary and one that must have cultural significance. The Social Sciences team had to decide whether having an “Ultimate Decision Making Machine” that had been given the power over all of decisions made in society was a good or bad idea. They then had to decide if they would reinforce its position in society or destroy it for good.

The themes of these challenges help us to understand how complicated the problems were. Three hours is not long to read and understand a problem, (often about seven pages long) discuss and solve the challenge, and then perform it live to a large audience. On top of this the Engineering Mathematics team had to build a machine and work out the mathematics

related to your discipline, then being locked in a room for three hours to solve it, build machines and perform in a ten-minute skit. You also have to solve a four-minute spontaneous problem, in which you work together to solve creatively while being observed by judges. This is the basis of the Tournament.

The Opening Ceremony was held at a football oval. We got aquatinted with our opponents and bonded with our team, through activities like TO

The Victorian teams, mostly Girton Students took it upon themselves to provide entertainment while we waited for the results, by starting a big dance off. The circle we made with our few teams dancing off grew and grew to accommodate teams from all over Australia and the Pacific. The friendly and fun nature of the Girton students was evident and entertaining in the seriousness of the competition.

Over the four days we spent in Adelaide we went to the beach, walked everywhere and visited Rundle Mall, to immerse ourselves in the culture. (It didn’t hinder us that every shop in the mall was closed because it was 9pm at night.) But many things were learnt during the TOM Nationals this year. From figuring out how to cook toast and avoid evacuation and a fire brigade to how to trap a teacher in a fire escape (accidentally of course) and how to solve a problem in four minutes or three hours with only a team of 7 and some creativity to help you.

All of the Girton teams were very happy with their performances and solutions to the problems. Although no National titles were won, we feel that we gave our all to the whole experience and created solutions that were creative, innovative and unique.

A huge thank you goes out to the teachers who accompanied us to Adelaide, Mrs Sharon Hocking, Mrs Kirsten Maruff and primarily Mrs Viv Bath, as well as all of the facilitators who coached the teams through to nationals this year, Mr Peter Thomas and Alex Nielsen.

TedX Bendigo returned this year accompanied with the theme Connected, and was run by a committee of year 11 students along with Mrs Philips and Mr Vernon. Tasked with the large matter of producing nearly every aspect of the event, from tickets to marketing the committee met weekly and the event took shape quickly before our eyes.

The theme of connected sought to draw speakers to discuss the various ways in which connectedness impacts our everyday lives, and although the

digital aspect of the word played a large role in the nature of the speakers, ‘connected’ as seen on the day can influence our lives in many other ways.

Held in the Black Box, the day itself sold large amounts of tickets and brought forward an audience intrigued by the wide ranging nature of the speakers. Among them was former Girton student Sam Byrne (Year 12 2008), who spoke about his ability to connect through the means other than eyesight and how he is able to connect. Closer

to the more traditional theme of connectedness, Joe Ciancio spoke about the effects of AI on our society and what the future may look like. Perhaps the most emotional and heart-felt speech of the day however, was Joanne Baker. Drawing from her incredibly troubled background and her battle at times to survive through childhood, Joanne spoke about overcoming these setbacks and how it helped to to find a passion for connecting people through dogs, and her ongoing work with Righteous Pups as a

result.

A great day for all involved, TedX Bendigo once again demonstrated why it is a success worldwide and without a doubt had an impact on those in attendance, and was full of ideas worth spreading.

Thank you to all that assisted in making such a fantastic day occur and ensuring the event will be a success once again in the years to come.

RACING TEAMGIRTON

RACING TEAMGIRTON

On a perfect day for Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) racing, on Saturday 14th October three teams completed in the fifth and final round of the Victorian HPV Series. The event, held on the purpose built criterium track at Casey Fields, Melbourne once again attracted many entries and an impressive crowd of families and onlookers. The final Victorian Series placings are determined by the total number of points achieved over the year of racing. This year the competition across all categories was so strong that only a mere point separated the top-level placings. Girton Racing Team’s (GRT) Senior Secondary Team, Intrepid were placed 1st buy just one point. Teams Introuble and Infusion were placed a point apart in second and third within the Middle Secondary category. The pressure was on all GRT teams to win or place well.

The army of hard-working GRT families ensured our pits were up and ready for a day of racing and our competitors were looked after with food, water and warming up and warming down after their stints in the vehicles. Mr Robin and Mr Lucas Kirby, along with Mr David Stone yet again donated the time and hard work to ensure

our vehicles arrived in tip top mechanical shape, and that they remained that way the whole of the 6-hour event.

After the very uneventful day of racing (thank goodness) team Intrepid crossed the finish line first, some 11 laps clear of their closest opposition. Introuble finished the race in 3rd and our youngest team, of first year drivers crossed the line in a very respectable 5th. The army of GRT parents then packed up the pits in record time before we all headed over to the Victorian HPV Series presentation. The GRT later walked away from the presentation with broad smiles and stoked with pride having been awarded Victorian HPV Series, Senior Secondary Champions, and Middle Secondary Second and Third places. This has been yet another year of wonderful achievements, awarded to our support families and hardworking GRT students.

When Girton Grammar’s cohort of year 12 students said farewell to their secondary schooling last week, they took part in several of the school’s long-held traditions.

A Girton graduation begins with a thanksgiving service at which students light a candle. The symbolic gesture reflects Girton’s school song, which asks students to “take our torch and hold it high”.

After the customary signing of school shirts, the students then share lunch and a final assembly with their parents.

Performances from other year levels within the school are offered to farewell the year 12 cohort.

There is no Prompt Payment Discount for a Tuition With-drawal Fee. For example: (a) Students leaving at the end of the school year (except Year 12 students) or during the following vacation or during First Term the following year will need to have provided notice in writing to the Headmaster no later than 5 p.m. on the last school day of Third Term (in September).(b) Students departing at the end of second Term or during Third Term will need to have provided notice in writing to the Head-master by the last school day of the First Term. EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES 2017

Our School’s Pastoral Care system includes my specialised services which include consultancy, counselling and educational assessments for students of all ages in both the Junior and Senior School.

The consultancy services involve regular meetings with the Pastoral Care team throughout the School. Staff present student issues for discussion and support plans are made collaboratively.

Counselling Services may be initiated by parents or staff. This generally involves matters which are complex, and possibly requiring Mental Health Care Plans from General Practitioners. Such issues may include stress management, separation, anxiety, depression and grief.

Educational Psychology assessment work may also be initiated by parents, but may also occur following teacher concerns being expressed to their Head of House, LRC staff or following consultation with myself. Early identification of Specific Learning Difficulties can do much to address student skill levels and to assist them achieving their potential.

Should you require further information or support for any aspect of your child’s social or emotional development, learning or behavioural difficulties, please email me directly on [email protected] or on 0419108460.

Interviews can be made by contacting Mrs. Lorraine Ellis (Monday, Thursday, Friday) on 4408 5937., Ms. Michelle Gilkes (Tuesday) on 4408 5909 or Mrs. Rebecca Doherty (Wednesday) on 4408 5951 .
