DEFINITION:

Distance Education is a systematically organized form of self study. It is made possible at a distance by means of media

which can cover long distances.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

CHARACTERISTICS :•Physical distances between Teacher and Learner.•Individual based Learning.•No immediate Supervision by Tutor.• No Fixed Lecture rooms.•Use of Multi-media.•Part- time based Education.

OBJECTIVES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

Objectives :•To provide Educational opportunities to students who had to discontinue formal education on account of various circumstances.•To provide a suitable alternative path to wider opportunities in Education.•To Provide an efficient and less expensive system of education.•To provide Educational opportunities to students who had to discontinue studies because of lack of motivation and aptitude.•To Provide Educational opportunities to citizens who are in business or in service.

MERITS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

MERITS:• Useful for In-service personnel, house wives, under- privileged people, school drop-outs etc.

• Under this system a learner can progress at his/her own speed.

• Flexible Educational system which is not limited by time and place restrictions.

• It fulfills the need of various categories of persons who are unable to make use of the formal system of education.

• There is no need to spend on buildings and other equipments.

• Distance education makes Higher Education accessible to all sections of society.

LIMITATIONS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

Limitations :• The scope for practical experience is very negligence.

• Periodic review of the courses is not frequent.

• Opportunities of learning through social contact among students are very limited.

• The Students hardly get opportunities for different type of co-curricular activities.

• Sometimes, same weightage or importance is not given to Distance Education as is given to the Degrees and diplomas obtained through Formal Education.

• The students are given extensive written material through post but the same is not suitably supplemented by discussion on Radio or TV.
