10 YEARS “ON THE ROAD” FOR 90 YEAR OLD PETER

At the grand young age of 90 Peter Tripovich, formerly of Bamawm now of Echuca, recently finished his walk all the way around Australia raising money for a favourite charity of his, “International Children’s Care”. Peter, as an 80 year old, began his walk 10 years ago from Melbourne’s GPO headed north to Cooktown, across the top to Darwin, on to Western Austra-lia and down to Pemberton when unfortunately he had to stop and come home due to Jan’s, his wife, illness. Nine years after Jan passed away Pe-ter decided it was time to finish the trek, so returned to Pemberton with a new backup driver with caravan, resumed his walk on Australia Day this year and finished at Melbourne’s GPO on October 9. Peter has featured in commercial papers, and was interviewed on ABC radio in Echuca recently. The Locky News pays tribute to Peter a former reader of our ‘Priceless pa-per’, and would like to add that Janis Tripovich helped type the Locky News until her health put a stop to that.

SCHOOL NEWS

Juniors Excursion & Grade 2 Sleepover Last week students from the junior department enjoyed their excursion to Echuca. Students were lucky enough to watch the movie 'Storks' at the Paramount cinemas

before enjoying a Happy Meal and a play at Apex Park.

Students then ventured to Science Twist to take part in interactive educational activities with a 'Mini Beast' theme.

After a snack at the Hopwood Gardens, students travelled back to school. Students from Prep and Grade 1 were picked up and Grade 2 students began their annual School Sleepover. Students had dinner, a play, set up their beds and watched a movie, before going to sleep. In the morning students enjoyed breakfast in the staffroom. A great time was had by all. The students should be proud of their behaviour during the excursion and sleep-over. A big thank you to Rhonda Hann for making muffins, to Steve Koch for driving the bus and Miss Drummond for the yummy spag bol for dinner.

Energy Breakthrough This week we head off to Energy Breakthrough in Maryborough. Our grade 6 students are very excited! We have one team entered this year called the Locky Lasers. We would like to thank the fol-lowing sponsors: Moama RSL Lockington YAGERS Ward Bros Earthmoving MVP Feeds Action Club of Lockington HIP Pocket Echuca Mitre 10 Rochester.

About the program The Program aims to *

• Provide an excellent technology project for students from Prep to VCE level

• Encourage young people to explore solutions to environ-mental and transport issues

• Provide an opportunity for schools and communities to work and learn together

• Provide an opportunity for women and girls to participate in what has traditionally been a ‘male’ dominated area of the curriculum

• Be a fun program with real world challenges

• Offer students opportunities to explore and address vehi-cle design, driving skills and vehicle and passenger safety issues

The Three Program Elements *

• Display & Presentation A 20 minute presentation to judges for team members to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of their entry.

• Design & Construction An informal conversation assessing the student’s under-standing of the vehicle and the concepts involved in its design and construction.

• Trials Thousands of students ranging in age from nine to 19 push, pedal and pilot carts, human powered vehicles and energy efficient vehicles in dynamic tests that can last just a few minutes or as long as 24 hours.

Pop Into Preps Our 2017 Prep students have been having a lot of fun attending Pop into Prep program over the past couple of weeks. They have been busy learning school rou-tines and getting to know their teacher Jenny. They have meet their buddies and are all very excited getting to know the 'big ' kids at school.

PRESCHOOL ART EXHIBITION

The Lockington Preschool held an Art Exhibition and Market Day on Sun-day 30th it was well supported by our community with over 70 children and 50 adults coming along. Each child received a 'goodie' bag that was spon-sored by the Lockington/Elmore/Rochester Community Bank and provided children with pencils, a colouring book, balloon, sticker and book mark. It also included vouchers for lunch, a drink and a cupcake decorating activity. A free jumping castle , oversize games (from Jam Events) and circus school also helped to entertain the children. The Preschool obtained a com-munity grant from the shire of Campaspe to help run the event of which we are very thankful as it helped to keep the cost minimal for the day. The pre-school was set up with an amazing display of the children's work in as-sorted mediums or paper, clay and paint. The children's canvases were for sale and purchased by many family members. An assortment of market stalls offering metal sculptures, soy candles, sauces & relishes, biscuits, wooden toys, jam berry and handmade cards were setup and provided something for everyone. We must make a special mention to Laurie Foster for her kind donation and Councillor Leanne Pentreath for attending the day and drawing the raffle. We wish to thank all those that attended and helped to raise $1400 for the preschool which will be used to further develop our outdoor play areas and improve out preschool.

Kind regards Andria

Eulogy - Fay Keown Fay was born on 22 Sep-tember 1921 at Kerang. She was the second daughter of Percy and Ivy McIvor and was to grow up in Macorna, being later joined by five more sisters and a brother. She al-ways talked about the happy childhood she en-joyed. Each one had their jobs to do, and younger ones to care for. Percy

worked hard for his family, running his soldier settlement farm and doing other contract work in the district. Ivy managed without electricity until the early 1950’s – no fridge, no washing machine or microwave. Monday was washing day – all by hand and it took all day, and as the girls got older, they were responsible for cooking lunch, Tuesday was ironing day with the flat iron kept hot on top of the stove. Ivy cooked on a woodstove, producing great creations for her family, for whatever social occasion was occurring in town and whenever extended family mem-bers visited. Cream puffs were a speciality. She told her children frequently she “loved them around the world and back again”.

As the girls got older it came time for them to help with the milking, morning and afternoon, before and after school. They would spend the time singing, with Fay yo-delling. She even entered a competition at one stage, which was broadcast on 3BO. When aged about 20, she had her tonsils removed, and thankfully that was the end of the yodelling! There were other times, when Fay milked less than her share, as she would be reading a book propped up on the bail. Auntie Lex or Tag, grandpa’s helper, would get an extra cow to milk on those occa-sions.

Saturdays in the winter meant that the milking was done once a day, about 11am, so everyone could go to football and netball matches. One day in the muddy, sloppy yard, Fay slipped over. The problem was she had rag curlers in her hair – it required another hair wash, to remove the rags and mud. She had to then go out for the afternoon, with her hair straight.

When she was about 16 she met Wallie – he was rather a handsome new fellow in town, a sportsman and played the piano accordion – later as a member of the local band.

Ivy was a bit protective of her girls and one night Jean and Fay had gone to the dance and were late home, ap-parently it was a good night and there had been a collec-tion taken up for the band to go on longer – she was watching out and heard some chatting and laughing com-ing down the lane “Is that you Jean and Fay”. Alan and Wallie scampered off thinking they had blown their chances with the McIvor girls and their mother. They were obviously forgiven, as they both ended up marrying the girl they fancied.

Fay along with Jean and Lexie also May Keown were members of the first Netball team for Macorna – about 78 years ago. The rule then was, no talking while the game was being played – a penalty would be given to the oppo-sition. It is hard to believe that the three McIvor girls could be quiet for the whole game.

Fay enjoyed playing tennis during the summer. Over the years after finishing school, about year 8,

Fay helped some families in the district, worked on the telephone exchange in Macorna, in the nurse’s kitchen at the Bendigo Hospital, in Coles in Bourke St, Melbourne and at a guesthouse in Queenscliff.

Fay and Wallie married on 19 November, 1942. Wal-lie had already enlisted in the army and it was then that Fay and two of her sisters, Lexie and Valda enlisted into the AWAS. They were based at the Palaise Theatre in St Kilda sorting mail to be forwarded to troops overseas.

In March 1945 their first son Ian was born at Kerang. He had a congenital Heart Defect which in those days was unable to be repaired, and he died aged 7 months.

Following the war, Wallie went back to working with the Post Master General’s Department and was a postie in Shepparton when first demobbed. In September 1946 I (Pam) was born – Mum’s birthday present!!.

Two positions for a non-official post master became available, one at San Remo and the other at Lockington. Lockington was the choice, because of it being closest in distance to their families, and Wallie was successful with his application. In March 1947 life in “Locky” began, end-ing 44 years later.

Eulogy - Fay Keown (continued)

Twelve months later, Pete was born, and in October 1951 Rob joined us. Mum was a loving mother who worked hard to provide for us, making our clothes, creat-ing great food and preserves, encouraging us with our school work and sport – or in my case, dancing – but that didn’t last long.

Mum was an early working mother, as she worked her shifts on the manual exchange as a telephonist, going through the lounge room door to work. The exchange provided a 24 hours service, so with a phone that could ring anytime overnight, 3 young children earlier on, who could be wakeful or sick, an undisturbed sleep was some-thing Mum and Dad did not have for almost 23 years. The automatic phone service was a joy to them, sleep all night and stay out later – previously we had to be home by 10.30 to take over for the night.

Great friendships were developed in Locky with the Goldens, both Parsons families, Pittaways, Robins and Murnanes to name a few. These are all continued with the next generation. There were holidays to Rosebud and Christmas Eves at Keown’s.

Cooking was one of Mum’s passions, there are numer-ous recipe books, and scraps of paper with some creation recorded in her pantry. Pasties, apple pies, lemon marsh-mallow slice and ginger fluff were specialities, but the most notable was her hedgehog slice. When it came to making a larger batch, rolling the biscuits became a bit tiresome, so she had the idea of running over the biscuits with the car. It is advisable if you try this, that you do not tie up the plastic bag. There was a rather loud explosion, and the waste of four packets of Marie biscuits, but she persevered and got it down to a fine art with no further disasters.

Mum was a member of the Ladies Guild and Mothers Union at St Marys, Lockington, she could be relied on for sponges and other creations for the stalls and Church fete.

Having the new Post Office and house built at Locky, was an achievement of their time there.

By the time Mum and Dad retired in 1991 she had been the postal assistant to Dad for about 17 years. The move to the new house in Bendigo was their dream come true, closer to the boys and the grandchildren, and Mum set about making it a home. Over the next 23 years the garden was her hobby and pride and joy. They soon had new friends at View Hill, and in the street.

Mum was wonderful with her care for Dad. She had always encouraged and supported him over many years, then nursing him at home until he died in 2001. She con-tinued on alone, always happy to entertain family and friends, with some treat in the tin, or meal on the table. Pete and Rob and their families, her Church group every Monday, Joy, Thelma, Kay, Lesley and Lyn to name a few, and neighbours, Jan and Bill, Pam and Mike and Laura were her companions over that time. Laura and Mum had many a morning coffee, planned their gardening for the day, discussed recipes and what was happening in the “Bold and the Beautiful”.

Mum gave her car keys to Rob about 2 years ago – she made the decision, but there were several times over the next 6 months it was said “if only I could pop up to Coles for” whatever she thought she needed at the time.

Friendships Mum made, were very important in her life. One she had had from before she started school, with Doss Dunn, endured for over 90 years. Even though

Doss lived in Perth after her marriage in 1945, they wrote to one another every 4-6 weeks until 2014 when Doss entered aged care she died in 2015. There had been several trips for both of them across the Nullabor.

Mum, Nan and Nanna Yum will be sorely missed by us all, but she was tired and ready to meet her God. A cou-ple of times in the last 24 hours of her life, she said “Wallie’s waiting,” and I am sure he was. We know that she is at peace and we are happy for her.

Read by daughter Pam. Thank you to the family for sharing this eulogy. Fay Keown’s grandchildren’s tribute. Of all of the most significant milestones in Fays life,

would have to be that of the arrival of her precious grand-children and great grandchildren and the delight that each added to her life. The arrival of Nathan in 1969 was the transition for Fay to Nan, followed by Jo in 1973, Josh in 1976, Matthew in 1982 & Emily in 1986.

Nan liked a chat. No actually that's an understate-ment..., Nan loved to chat. She was jovial, interested and supportive of most things we wanted to do. She was in-vested in us and even if she was a little disappointed or concerned, she had a way of letting us know without lec-turing or making us feel bad. She would offer up little pearls of wisdom such as "oh well just put your best foot forward", "be kind to others and you can't go wrong". She would tell us to "never go to bed angry, to work at our re-lationships and to laugh at yourself everyday".

As kids we quickly learnt that our Nan, possessed su-perpowers when it came to food. Everything was amazing and as much as our parents tried, they just couldn't make the cut compared to the delicious array of foods consis-tently offered up by or Nan. Nan could even make promite on toast and boiled sausages taste amazing. It must have been all of that special “Nana" love that she put into the food.

Visits to Nan’s would involve a quick cuddle and a little chat whilst secretly hoping that the tin of hedgehog would-n't be too far away or that she had just whipped up a sponge cake with fresh cream before we arrived. Good old Nan, never to disappoint.

In 2000, Fay became a great grandmother, with the arrival of her first great grandchild Morgan, with Callum and Isabel to follow. Following suit, these kids too soon realised the food superpowers that Nan possessed, so much so that from the moment Morgan could talk, Nan became “Nana Yum”. And as with her grandchildren, she was unwavering in her unconditional love towards them too.

Our Nan, our “Nanny Yum”, was a remarkable woman. She was always a wonderful combination of warmth and kindness, laughter and love. She overlooked our faults, encouraged our dreams and praised our every success.

She loved us and she was loved by us, she was loved to the moon and back again.

REMEMBRANCE DAY AT MOLOGA

On a nice sunny morning about 30 district residence at-tended the Remembrance Day Service which was con-ducted by Bill Boyd, President of the Mologa & District Landcare Group. We heard about the history of Remem-brance Day and the changes through the years since World War One from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day and the two minute silence to one minute silence. On the first anniversary of the armistice in 1919 two minutes silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony at the new Cenotaph in London. In 1997, Gov-ernor - General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute's si-lence at 11am on 11 November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. (Ref.: Australian War Memorial) After the service a BBQ was enjoyed by all in attendance.

BOWLS CLUB REPORT

November 7: With the running of the Melbourne Cup last Tuesday the women retired to the champers and played no bowls. In the CVBD Midweek pennant our division one team played the super strong Moama combination. Although trying as per normal, the women displayed some immense determination to have the scoreboard with little between both sides at the break. However the Moama rinks showed their strength after lunch to win the contest 96-59. (A Lowrie, B Mustey, L Maslen, K Palmer (s) lost to B Eddy 24-37; L Appleby, A Haines, P MacFarlane, L Chugg (s) l.t. M Stephenson 13-28; A Brereton, M Davis, M Davie, P Humbert (s) l.t. S Connolly 22-31). There was no Week-end pennant played due to the staging of the Vic Open at Shepparton and district Pennant will resume next weekend. On the local tournament scene Kath Palmer and Marie Davie combined with Lola Williams (Moama) and Rhonda Gallagher (s) (City of Echuca) to win the prestigious Cohuna Ladies Invitation Fours on Sunday. A Great effort. Don Isgro and David Lupton journeyed to Calivil for the monthly Open Pairs. Winning two games out of the three played, they enjoyed the hospitality and friendship on offer. No prizes!! Russell Shawcross competed in the Vic Open at Hilltop (Tatura) on Sunday in the Pairs section

with Wes Gibbs (East Shepparton). In the first round the pair tackled a formidable pairing of Brad Orr and Matt Flapper. Some good bowling from both bowlers ended in a 10-12 loss. The pair failed to win a game after trying valiantly. Noted that Rod "Rocket" Werner and Ash Vesty (Mathoura) won their section. November 14: The women enjoyed ideal conditions on Tuesday for their weekly social bowls. The dynamic Phylis MacFarlane skipped the wnning team of Maxine Pavlich and Annette Brereton to an awesome victory over some pretty talented opposition. There was no Midweek pennant due to the Vic Open held at Shepparton during the week. A couple of early matches in the Club Championship were played with Kath Palmer defeating a gallant Anne Lowrie in a close affair while Annette Brereton proved too consistent for lady President Pauline Humbert. The men’s Club Championship draw will be on display this week at the clubhouse. In the latest round of CVBD Week-end pennant both divisions lowered their colours to their respective City of Echuca opponents. Division two had one winning rink in the 56-70 loss with the Graeme Turner four winning by one shot. The team has dropped to sixth place on the premiership ladder. Division four lost all rinks in their 48-89 shot disaster. (L Brereton l.t. C Moss 13-35; G Shawcross l.t. S Morgan 14-26 while K Main l.t. J Hollowood 21-28). Division four dropped out of the four and are now placed fifth. Back to the drawing board!!

Press Release Tuesday 8th November 2016

RADIOLOGY SERVICES AT REDHS

To ensure Rochester and Elmore dis-trict consumers have access to regular X- Ray and ultrasound services, Roch-ester and Elmore District Health Ser-vices (REDHS) have entered into an agreement with Goulburn Valley Imag-ing Group (GVIG) to deliver a three day a week service from REDHS’ site in Pascoe Street Rochester.

This arrangement will ensure the com-munity has regular access to high qual-ity X ray and Ultrasound services, which offer quick turn around on re-ports to support our Doctors in pre-scribing the most appropriate treatment for their patients. The partnership be-tween REDHS and GVIG will also save the inconvenience of travelling to other towns for services they can receive here in Rochester.

Radiology will be offered Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, except public holidays, appointments can be made

through REDHS main reception in person or by phoning 5484 4400 from 8.30am-5pm on any weekday. GP’s may use any referral slips to support local community members’ use this service. It is envisaged that as de-mand for services grows that extra hours may be made available.

As the Vision for REDHS is “Leading the community to better Health”, it is essential that REDHS enters into ar-rangements such as this” explains REDHS CEO Anne McEvoy. Anne goes on to say “This partnership with GVIG will support a high standard of service for our community and will en-sure that patients have access to ap-propriate diagnostic services which are essential for better health outcomes.”
