What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media product
and why?
What is distribution?Film distribution is the process in which a film takes to be
released to an audience. A distributor can be either an individual or organisation who will represent the film at markets
and festivals all over the world and will then try to sell it to television companies, for example; cable and satellite.
As well as television companies, film distributor’s also advertise films to airlines and other short film companies. The distributor is part of an organisation who deals
with the theatrical release of a film in a certain country on top of marketing and the movement of films for viewing from
somebody’s own home, (DVD, Download, Video-On-Demand etc). Frequently feature films have various distributors who
represent them in different regions, plus distributors conducting the home-viewing circulation.
Distribution is a highly competitive sector in the film business of debuting films and sustaining them in the market place. It is up to the film distributor to bring a film to the market starting from scratch and apprehending its potential. The film business is by and large product-driven, this means the films themselves are
the main reason why as an audience we buy tickets.
Different Film Distribution Companies
My film ‘Jenny Black’ I believe is the type of thriller film that ‘Lionsgate’ would distribute.
The company is known for releasing many types of horror and thriller films.
The film distributor ‘Lionsgate’ most popular and highly recognised films include ‘SAW’, ‘The
Hunger Games’ and ‘Twilight’. Although neither of these are thrillers, they have all been box office hits within days of
release. Similarly to ours the target audience’s are all aimed at the younger generation. This is the same as our film which is aimed typically at
teenagers. Our film features a young girl with a
psychological mind disorder which we think some of our audience may possibly be able to
relate to. In conclusion we think ‘Lionsgate’ best suits our thriller film and target audience.
I think our film has the potential to be a successful box office hit worldwide. The main character ‘Jenny Black’ is portrayed as a psychotic teenage girl who has some serious mental issues. We think people watching
our film will somehow be able to relate to our character ‘Jenny Black’ as there has be known to be
similar characters in previous thriller movies.
This type of thriller film we hope will appeal to a large target audience of all ages but mainly teenagers- teenagers being some of the most frequent
‘cinema goers’out of all the target ages.
UK – World Audiences
We chose to upload the trailer for our film ‘Jenny Black’ on to Youtube. We think this is the quickest and easiest way
for people to watch our trailer and get an insight into what our film is about and hopefully encourage people to come
at watch it once it has been released in cinemas across the UK.
Another of our marketing strategies is to create our own official website for our film ‘Jenny Black’. This will be a
good starting point for people to view the film trailer and get to know the actors, actresses, and directors etc. This will be the first place where tickets will be on sale to the
public and chance for them to pre-order tickets.
Our Film’s Marketing Strategies
As our film is a low-budget film we plan to be our own distributor. This means we can show our film in smaller
cinema’s and theatres over the UK instead of releasing the film to as many screen across the country. We plan to use the internet and posters to promote our film to the public instead of promoting via expensive TV advertisement which we can
not afford. We still plan to open our film to smaller cinema’s on the
specific release date agreed, and will continue to show the film for the whole week period if audience numbers are at
substantial rate and ratings are not falling. The positive’s of being our own distributor means we will
receive 100% of the box office income which will benefit us considerably.
The other positive of being our own film distributer means we can retain all our rights for our film throughout.
