According to the Meteorological Centre Karachi, Badin received 148 millimeters (mm) of rain by Thursday noon. Despite the situation, calls went unattended at the Met observatory in Badin.that the rain hit the 300 mm mark by 3 pm citing to the Met department.

People are being pulled out from areas submerged in two to three feet of water in administration has asked the army and some NGOs for boats.

According to our field staff any deaths due to the rain were not reported until Thursday evening. Badin, like other rain hit-districts of Sindh, has been without electricity since is likely to persist unless the rain stops.

The Hyderabad Electric Supply Company could not be reached to confirm when the power supply will be restored. The rain has also destroyed cotton, tomato, spices and other crops spthousands of acres.

Concerns about the LBOD

The Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) is a winding drain that begins at Ghotkiall the way down to the sea at Badin, collecting sewerage as it goes. The drain has been a source of trouble for people of Badin.

The sea is another problem as tidal waves grow stronger in August. The high tides mean the sea rejects water from the river and outfall drains. To make matters worse, the LBOD’s Tidal Liboth built to channel drainage towards the sea, were destroyed during a cyclone in 1999 and were never rehabilitated completely.

Meanwhile, one of Sida’s precautionary measures was to close the two canals supplying Badin from Kotri Barrage.

“The gates of the Akram Wah and Phuleli canals were closed on Thursday but the impact of water which is already in the system (canals and distributaries) will take 20 to 30 hours to subside,”

The canals are closed because water consumption for agriculcanal water would only lead to floods.

Findings of Food, Shelter, Water, Environment & Sanitation Water

• There is high level of food insecurity in three Talukas as their lands & crops are inundated.

• Water supply situation in the flood affected areas is inadequate as the people have no access to clean and safe drinking water. There was no piped water supply system prior to floods in most of the affected areas. a cases are increasing.

• Presently, the water is supplied to the communities through tinkering.

• Water is insufficient given drinking, cooking, washing, bathing and other uses. It is also of low quality.

• There was no water testing system.

• The communities were also lacking clean utensils’ for storage of this potable water as most of their belongings were washed away in the floods.

Recommendation

• There is need for food supplies on priority.

• Water quantity and quality should be increased to cater the needs. This will also decrease the incidence of disease outbreaks in the area.

• Distribution of water purification tablets and PUR sachets in flood affected communities. Orientation on their usage should also be conducted.

• Distribution of jerry cans and buckets with lids.

• Installation of hand pumps in places within the communities which are easily accessible and meet SPHERE requirements.

• Testing water quality from the existing sources for any bacterial contamination.

• Restoration of water supply in schools and health facilities

Sanitation

• Due to non availability of latrine facilities, the male members are forced to practice open defecation, whereas the female are facing problems and use their existing household/camp premises for open defecation.

• During the visit no hand washing facilities and hand washing soaps were found.

• Stagnant water was witnessed in low lying areas in few of the villages which can become breeding grounds for flies and mosquitoes.

Recommendations

• Installation of dry pit latrines with hand washing facilities in the communities at easily accessible places

• De-watering and spraying of stagnant water ponds with anti malaria spray

• Restoration of latrines in health and school facilities

• Solid waste clearing mechanism has to be put in place and dumping ground identified in the communities.

• Soap and water should be provided to the community for frequent hand washing.

Hygiene Conditions

• Personal and environmental hygiene conditions were found in poor shape. Most of people’s valuables were washed away by floods and there were very few means to take care of their personal and environmental hygiene.

• It was observed that people were using unprotected water for drinking and bathing. Presence of flies in the area due to stagnant water was also noticed. No soap was available for hand and

clothes washing and people were using unhygienic buckets and utensils for water collection and storage.

• During interaction with community members it was observed that they have no knowledge of health and hygiene issues.

• Majority of the people were complaining of skin diseases.

Recommendations

• Hygiene promotion campaigns should be initiated on priority basis for adopting safe and healthy hygiene practices (focus on key massages: Use of clean drinking water, use of latrine for defecation and hand washing with soap handling food safely, safe house hold refuse disposal)

• Distribution of family Hygiene kits
