About Alirajpur District

Alirajpur district, a part of Indore division is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with itsadministrative headquarters located at Alirajpur town. The district got its name from itsheadquarters town, Alirajpur. On the other hand the town derived its name from the twocapital cities of the princely state of Alirajpur – ‘Ali’ which was the former capital ofAlirajpur and ‘ Rajpur’ which was its latter capital. Vastly tribal in character, the area is ahilly one with most people living in small villages in the vicinity of Alirajpur. Prior to Indiagot its independence in 1947, the Alirajpur State was a part of the Bhopawar Agencysub-division of the Central India Agency. After India’s independence, Alirajpur Statebecame a part of the Indian Union. Earlier, in 1948 the Alirajpur district was under theMadhya Bharat state but later on 1st November 1956 it came under the re-organizedMadhya Pradesh state. The Alirajpur district came into existence on 17th April, 2008.

Geographically, the district lies at 22°31'N latitude, 74°36'E longitude and 300 m Altitude.The district encompasses a geographical area of 3,182 sq km and it is bounded byJhabua district on the North East, Barwani district on the South East, Dhar district onthe East , Gujarat state on the West and Maharashtra on the South. The climate of thedistrict remains pleasant throughout the year except the summer season. The actualrainfall in the district was 875.9 mm in the year of 2015-16.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Alirajpur, Jobat andBhabra. It comprises 4 towns and 543 villages in the district. There are 1 Lok Sabha seatand 2 Assembly constituencies in the district.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 7,28,999 (persons) out ofwhich 3,62,542 (males) and 3,66,457 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 1011females for every 1000 males. The district has a population de nsity of 229 persons persq km. The major religion in the district is Hindu with 96.72% of the total population.

The economy of the district is solely dependent on agriculture. Most of its lands are usefor agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture inorder to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are Mangoes,wheat, maize, pulses, spices, sorghum, garlic, chili, brinjal, etc. The adoption of the newagricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase theproduction of various agricultural items. The industrial growth in the district isinsufficient. In the name of industry, only a few industries of wood carving are present inthe district. Every year a good amount of revenue comes from these industries helps inits economy to a great extent.

The district is quite backward in terms of education. It has a countable number ofrecognised government educational institutions and some are Govt PG College, GovtCollege (Bhawra), Govt Degree College (Jobat), etc. As per 2011 census the literacy ratein the district is 36.1% (persons), 42.02% (males) and 30.29% (females).

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from differentparts of the country as well as world. Mathwad, a place located in the southern portionof the district, which is bounded by the famous Vindhya mountain range. The denseforest of the place is full of a great variety of fauna and flora. Moreover, the well knownKajalrani temple is also located at this place . Alirajpur place is renowned for itsmarvellous Jain temple. Laxmaniji Teerth has the deity of Padma Prabhu Swami, as itsmain shrine. Pilgrims from far off places comes to this teerth to offer their prayers.Another most prominent temple in the district is Shri Laksamani Teerth, which wasconstructed 2000 years ago.

Chandra Shekhar Azad also known as Azad, an eminent Indian revolutionary who re-estabilshed the Hindustan Republican Association under a new name, Hindustan SocialistRepublican Association (HSRA) was born on 23rd July, 1906 at Bhavra in the Alirajpurdistrict. He was also made the mentor of Bhagat Singh and the chief strategist of theHSRA a fter the death of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil and three other notable leadersof the party namely Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri and Ashfaqulla Khan.
