I told her what I expected for her to do, and we both knew that she was not going to succeed at it, as there were many obstacles that she had to get by. She is doing a great job with the Leo's with no cooperation from five of the Leo Clubs. Thanks for the great job you have done. I will become a Past District Governor as District Governor Elect Lion Deb Burkholder has her Oath of Office and someone pulls her ribbon off of her name tag in Toronto, Canada. Thoughts from the 1st Vice District Governor Lions, Lionesses, and Leos,

The 2014 Pennsylvania Lions State Convention is now

officially in the history books. I want to extend a spe-

cial thank you to the Lions of District 14-B for hosting

an outstanding convention in Pittsburgh this year. I

was happy to see so many Lions from District 14-D

make the trip to the State Convention. If you have nev-

er experienced this event you need to put it on your list

of things to do next year. Our District will be hosting

the convention and you will have no better opportunity

to come out and see what it is all about and to meet Li-

ons from all over our great state of Pennsylvania. Next May the convention site will be the

Host Resort on route 30 in Lancaster. Stay tuned to the District newsletter and the District

website for countdown information about the 2015 State Convention.

For me personally, the convention was a very special time. All the incoming District Gover-

nors were introduced to the state and we also had a very nice pinning ceremony on Sunday

evening where the outgoing Governors give their District Governor pin to the incoming Gover-

nors and wish them well in their upcoming year. I want to thank District Governor Jack for

all his leadership and guidance this past year. He has done a great job leading our District in

the 2013-2014 Lion’s year. Way to go Jack!

The year, however, is not over yet. We still have until the end of June to keep working and im-

proving our District for this Lion’s year. Our last Cabinet meeting is Sunday June 1, 2014 at

the Mountville Park Lion’s Pavilion so if you have not attended one yet you still have time.

There will be an informative workshop as well as lunch to purchase and the cabinet meeting.

We also have our 25th Ride for Sight coming up on Father’s Day. As announced at the 20th

Ride for Sight this will be the final year for this District project so come out and enjoy all the

motorcycles and the good food for the last time as the ride is being retired and a new project

will be started in the 2014-2015 Lion’s year. Also don’t forget to attend the Ride for Sight Con-

cert on Saturday June 21, 2014. I wish to thank Lions Walter and Sharon Lesher for their

dedication to the Ride for Sight over the last 25 years. If you see them please let them know

how much you appreciate all the work they have put in over the last 25 years to make the Ride

for Sight so successful. Hopefully our new District project will grow to be just as successful.

I hope everyone is out enjoying this beautiful Memorial Day weekend! Plant some flowers and

keep mowing that grass!

THOUGHTS FROM 2nd VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Greetings All!!

Pa. Lions State Convention is history & now the focus is on

the 2015 State Convention to be hosted by District 14D. Co-

pious notes were taken on what not to do, new ideas to kick

the event up a notch. I spent time at our 2015 Convention

Display & enjoyed informing Lions about what District 14D

will be offering in Lancaster. A lot of Lions mentioned that

they love to go to the Pa. Dutch area, (women & shopping). I

think we'll show them a great time.

Going to a State Convention gives one an opportunity to

learn & explore what is out there in the world of Lionism & to realize that you are a part of a

great organization. I enjoyed talking to Lions I haven't seen for awhile & making new Lion

friends. There were seminars, tours of Pittsburg & on Saturday ight we had a concert by the

Pa. Lions State Band, a group of young people who will be going to the International Conven-

tion in Toronto & will make us proud.

We were honored to hear International President Barry Palmer from Australia, "G Day, Ma-

tes!" He spoke of his travels around the world & how our fellow Lions are serving the less

fortunate in many ways.

In the coming month all the Clubs will be installing new officers & taking the step into the

2014-15 Lion year. Give serious thought to attending the June 29th training for Lions/Lioness

Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers & Membership Chairs. It will be at the

EUMC Church in Brownstown beginning at 2 p.m.. (See flyer in the newsletter). Hope to see

you there. No matter how long you have been a Lion, there is always something new to learn

or an easier way of doing the job.

Yours in Lionism,

1st VDGE Lion Kathy Ridder

COIN CARDS 2014: During this past Lions Year, a little over $21,00.00 was collected and

turned in for eye research. I would like to thank the Clubs and individuals that contributed to

the cause. During this past year, one of the researchers from Hershey Medical Center that

was awarded a $26,000.00 grant received an additional grant of $750,000.00 from the Nation-

al Institute of Health. So you can see your quarters do make a difference in eye research, both

locally and nationally. Thanks again. PDG Ron Peters

Nomination and Selection of District Melvin Jones Fellowship

PURPOSE:

To provide guidelines on the nomination and selection process of District 14-D for a Melvin Jones Fellowship to be presented to a Lion from each Region and a Lioness.

GENERAL:

1. Each Lionistic year, District 14-D may present a Melvin Jones Fellowship to a Lion per Re-gion along with a Lioness based on nominations from the Lions/Lioness clubs.

2. Nominations pertain to New Melvin Jones Fellowships only and not Progressive Fellowships.

3. The LCIF Chairperson must submit in the District Newsletter information and instructions, along with a deadline, on how to nominate a Lion/Lioness. This must be submitted at least two months before the deadline.

4. Only Clubs that contributed to the District as per the Contribution Schedule for LCIF, which is set each year by the District Governor, may submit a nominee for a District Melvin Jones Fellowship.

For example: If the per member contribution is $5.00 and your club has 20 members you would need to contribute $5.00 X 20 members or $100.00 to be able to submit a nominee.

5. All nominations must be board approved and signed by either the Club President or Secretary, preferably by the President where possible.

6. All nominations MUST be submitted on club stationery providing the qualifications of the nominee and sent to the LCIF Chairperson and a copy to the District Secretary by the established dead-line.

7. Within a month after the deadline, the LCIF Chairperson must call a meeting and based on the received nominations select the Lion/Lioness from each region and Lioness clubs that will received a Melvin Jones Fellowship from District 14-D.

The final decision, will be made by a Committee consisting of the District Governor, the last Past District Governor from each Region, Cabinet Secretary, and Cabinet Treasurer.

Note: The process will be: The above Lions will assess those nominated in each Region, assign-ing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. positions to each nominee, the #1 position will receive the Melvin Jones Award. If there are extra dollars available for awards, the #2 positions will be considered for the remaining awards, etc.

*The 1st Vice District Governor, 2nd Vice District Governor, LCIF Chairperson, Lioness Coor-dinator, and the Region Chairpersons will also be present to give input on any nominees that they know. They do NOT have voting rights.

*The District Governor at the time of the selection process will present the Melvin Jones Fellow-ships at a later date, preferably at the following year’s Region Rallies when he/she is the Immediate Past District Governor.

Deadline to submit a Melvin Jones candidate is June 1, 2014

Greeting "Fab 4"!! How fast this year has gone! Despite the endless winter, the Lion/Lioness year has flown. All "Fab 4" clubs, having set their goals for the year, have accomplished much in raising funds which provides the means to serve. It never ceases to amaze me how the Lioness Clubs go over the top in their giving. The PA Lions State Convention in Pittsburg was filled with seminars, tours & food! I attended the Lioness/Ladies breakfast & took notes for 2015. I'm looking forward to having the "Fab 4" on board to help kick it up a notch. I want a good representation of our great Lioness Clubs to be visible. I know there were Lionesses at that breakfast but their presence was not celebrated enough for me. We'll talk! As you know PDG Lion/Lioness Joan will be stepping into the Coordinator shoes & I know you all will support her as she will support you. I thank you for the hospitality you have shown me &, for the most part, getting your monthly reports & newsletters to me so I could keep informed about the great things you all have done this year. I wish you all continued success & "GROW YOUR CLUB." Congratulations go out to all who have gotten new members, now the job is to retain those members. Treat them with care, listen to them & what their interests are, guide but let them begin to lead. Get them involved stat!!

Sincerely, Lioness "Co" & 1st VDGE Kathy

Notes and Hints from your Global Leadership Team

As we enter a new Lions years next month we are committed to training our members about the building blocks on which we stand – helping those less fortunate that ourselves in our communities, defining communities as world-wide. This includes taking care of children, homeless and seniors in our own communities. For example, I was speaking with a Lion who had been a member for quite a few years and he did not know about the Lions Clubs Interna-tional Foundation and all the good work that has been done, not only in the United States but around the world. Since we are a “Service Organization” one has to wonder are we missing the whole concept of Lions in our individual club’s? Performing service is what we were chartered to do and all members need to know what service your club is doing. As a Club Leader, are your members, both new and old, getting an orientation on what your club is all about? Attending Zone Meetings, District Cabinet Meeting, District, State and International Conven-tions you will see plenty of examples of service that we provide each and every year. As Club Leaders we need to lead by example and show our communities that with the proper planning, anyone, anywhere can give back to the communities in which there Lions Club is chartered. Make plans for your Club Officers to attend the Club Officers Training at Emanuel United Methodist Church in Brownstown, Pa. at 2:00 PM on June 29, 2014. Get up to date with the latest changes and share thought and idea’s from other Club Officers. Let us encourage you to aspire to be the best of the best. Make good decisions, remem-bering that you represent the members of your club, not just yourself. Plan your year, set your goals and reach for success.

Leadership seminars/workshops coming up include:

June 1st is our Cabinet Meeting at Mountville Park. There will be a seminar/workshop at 12:30 PM. These seminars have been well attended, so come out for lunch at noon and be part of the workshop. Reservation form for lunch is included in this newsletter. June 29th is the Club Officers Training at UMC Church is Brownstown, Pa. at 2:00. Reserva-tion form included in this newsletter. On behalf of your Global Leadership Team, we thank you for all that you are doing so that we are successful in serving those less fortunate than ourselves. For more information or a club program from one of our Team Members contact either 1st VDGE Kathy Ridder at 717-661-7760 or myself.

We had 103 bowlers participate with a net profit of $1,764.50. Not bad for the long, cold and snowy weather we’ve had this winter.

Chairman P. D. G. Rodney W. Sweger

Sunday, July 20, 2014 has been designated as “Pennsylvania Lions Appreciation Day”. This is

the day to recognize Immediate Past District Governors, District Liaisons, and all Lions, Lion-

esses, and Leos, for their outstanding support of the Beacon Lodge Program.

You, as a Lion, Lioness or Leo, are cordially invited to bring your families to Beacon Lodge to

join the festivities. The day begins with a chicken barbecue served from 11:00 AM to 2:00

PM, $8.00 per person and includes one-half chicken, salad, baked beans, roll, coffee, iced tea

and dessert. Pin Traders are invited to participate – contact Tim McCaulley at 12 Fieldstone

Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, if you wish to display pins.

Clubs planning to arrange for bus transportation are urged to give the camp ample notice so

that adequate parking arrangements can be made. Bring lawn chairs, and or blankets for seat-

ing during the camper's talent show.

We hope you will be able to visit the camp on “Pennsylvania Lions Appreciation Day” to ob-

Several District 14-D LEO's have had a busy month of May!

The Ephrata MS LEO's held a meeting with VisionCorps Volunteer Coordinator, Dawn Rissmiller, teaching about the different vision problems that they could encounter and worked specifically with vision simulators. The goggles they wore are the same ones that were used during the 14-D convention Leo programs and it was eye-opening for everyone! They were able to use the goggles to learn about Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration. They wore the goggles and then attempted to do their homework,

read and do puzzles. This was a great learning lesson for them.

The Garden Spot LEO's provided a service project at the Leola division of VisionCorps. They weeded and planted flowers around the Leola divi-sion and then were treated to a tour of the new facility. Pete Grumbrecht, Leola Plant Manager, showed them how all the machinery works as well as introducing them to the 2 lines of food product that are being pro-duced at this location. This service project was VERY appreciated and

the outside of the plant looks fabulous!

The Lititz LEO Club held a member-ship drive at the Cain's Bowling Lanes and welcomed 4 new mem-bers that night. All the lights were turned out and music blared as the LEO's held a fun night. They were also a big part of the Warwick THON event and presented a check from the Lions for $500 along with

snacks and all the breakfast for the students. Lastly, they made donations to the Lititz REC and Lititz Springs Park from proceeds from the Fire & Ice

Festival.
