As I watched the outstanding election speeches presented by Year 5 students nominated for School Leadership positions in 2018, I realised how quickly our students grow and how often the foundations for current success are laid by lessons, goals and experiences that occur much earlier in life. At Marrickville West we aim to provide our students with the confidence and skills they will require to find success and fulfilment as they strive to meet their potential and make their mark as creative problem solvers and responsible citizens. It is always a pleasure to see Marrickville West students doing well as they move into high school and the world beyond. The Kindergarten class that began at Marrickville West when I did in 2005, completed their

Higher School Certificate this year. The photos here show that group of students on their last day of Year 6 in 2011 and, those who attended Tempe High School, on their last day of Year 12 in 2017. All have shone in their school lives and I continue to be very proud of the young adults they have become.2018 will see former students from Marrickville West serve as School Captains in two local high schools. Martina (Daughter of our Chinese language teacher and most dedicated canteen volunteer) was Captain of Marrickville West in 2012 and is now Captain of Tempe High School for next year. Luba (sister of Erika in Year 2) was chosen as Captain of Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design for 2018.

Lazy bones We had a wonderful afternoon at LazyBones on Sunday 19th November. Kindy parents, Alex Heffernan and Craig Pietersen were generous with the beautiful venue. MWPS music teacher, Stacey Caponas, helped organize all the performers. The Concert Band, Junior Band, Hip Hop Group, Glee Club, and Rock Band all did fabulous jobs to a packed audience! Thanks to all who came out!

Game night Friday 24th November is a FREE Game Night. Get the family away from the screens for a couple of hours and have some fun for all ages in the school hall. We will be playing board games and card games from 6 to 8pm. Volunteers are appreciated to help pack up tables and do a sweep so we can all go home. Board games and card games will be available for all ages, and if you have one, please bring for the night! Don’t be afraid to bring the little ones too, this is a full family event.

Garden PlantingMany thanks to Clare Nadas who has coordinated with the school and local nurseries to get plants for our new big garden bed including donations from the Marrickville Community Nursery! We had a Planting Bee on 13th November and greatly appreciate the help from Clare, Lindy Alwis, Vivi

Martin, Sharmilla Mani, as well as Chiara O’Reilly and her mother and all the students that came to help plant and water during lunch!

AGMOur next P&C meeting will be our Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 30th November. We’ll be looking for some new blood to take on executive roles. All roles will

be open for voting. Mel Stopic who has been covering many vital roles for 8 years will be significantly winding back her P&C involvement at Marrickville West as she’ll now how two kids at high school. She will not be continuing as Vice President or Canteen Leader next year. She would also like to pass on her role as Class Parent Co-ordinator, mentoring someone else in this at the start of next year, with a view to passing on the role to that person in full by April. As the canteen grows and as we look at online ordering options and possibly employing more people we are hoping to find a few people passionate about managing the canteen to form a canteen committee. If you are interested contact Lindy Alwis ([email protected]). A brief description of the P&C roles can be found below to give everyone an idea of what might be involved.

Canteen HelpersA huge thanks to all the lovely Mums and Dads who have helped out throughout the year in the canteen. Cynthia Bacon has helped out in the mornings on Mondays and Fridays taking

orders. Jenny Pham has done Monday and Thursdays every recess. Mina Cheng has made coffees every Tuesday morning for teachers and school visitors, and opened the canteen for recess every Tuesday and Friday. Leesa Morant, James Goodman, Rich Nash, Jo Smith, Sharon Chalmers,

Lauren Hamilton and Melanie Stopic have done a day each week.Without our recess helpers the canteen would not be open at all for snacks in the afternoon. Our morning helpers are much appreciated, letting Wendy get organized for the 100 orders she is getting each day. We’ll be requiring more helpers next year so think about if you can volunteer an hour each week either at 9-10am or 2-3pm. Keep your eyes and ears open for a Last Day BBQ! More info to come soon!

Write an email once a week covering the up-coming school and P&C activities. Oversee the “Class Parents”, and ensure the Class Parents pass on relevant P&C information to their classes.
