Newsletter 13th June 2017 Term 2 Week 8
Principal’s Report
School disco Thank you to the many parents and family members who supported our school disco last week, and a huge thank you to
our P&C who made this night possible. It was a fun night, and its always fantastic to see so many students dancing the night
away. Thank you also to the staff who generously gave up their time for supervision.
School reports Currently our staff are busy writing school reports for your child. I am looking forward to reading each of these, and cele-
brating the great successes your children have. These reports will go home to families on 29th June. Student led confer-
ences are scheduled for term 3, week 2, from the 25th to the 27th July. More information will be sent home very soon in
relation to these meeting, and are a great time to discuss student achievement, and student goals.
Parking in Mills street We continue to have concerns reported in relation to the parking situation at the front of the school. I know this is a con-
gested area, and I appreciate the difficulties associated with parking at this time. However, please do not park in the kiss
and drop zone, and please do not block the road if you are waiting to move in to this zone.
It is essential that the traffic continues to flow through Mills street, and if the traffic is blocked by waiting vehicles, the bus-
es cannot get though and the congestion will take longer to clear.
If there is not a spot available in the zone, please drive around the block and let the congestion ease, and then return a
couple of minutes later. Usually by 5 past three, the area is accessible, and there is always a teacher on duty till the stu-
dents have been collected. We appreciate your assistance with this.
Visitors passes Just a reminder that all visitors to our school who are assisting in any way need to sign in to the office. As per child safety
requirements, I have asked staff to approach adults in our school who are not wearing visitors badges to ensure that they
are legitimate visitors in our school.
Interrupted water in our school From time to time, works happen in our school which requires us to have the water
turned off. This occurred recently, and was no cause for concern. I understand that
some people believe that the water was turned off for an expected period.
This was not the case. The water was turned off for 2 periods of 30 minutes each
within a 6 hour period. In all cases, where water is turned off, it will be for a limited
period, and never during break times. If ever there is a situation where water is una-
vailable for extended periods of time, parents will be notified.
Warmest regards,
Sharon McFarlane
Principal

The WBPS Rugby League Team The boys represented our school extremely well at the annual
Paul Harragon Cup.
We played 7 games, winning six and only losing one. We scored
80 points and had 8 points scored against us. It was an impressive
display of teamwork and sportsmanship to achieve such great re-
sults.
Thanks to the family members who helped out with lifts and jump-
er washing. Keep up the wonderful effort boys.
Girls Soccer
On the 31st May our girls soccer team participated in the PSSA Knockout for 2017 at Speers Point. They showed won-
derful sportsmanship and encouragement towards their team mates and other schools. They were amazing representa-
tives of Warners Bay Public School. Our team won one out of the three games, they tried incredibly hard and didn't stop
all day. I was so proud of them and it was my absolute pleasure training them and taking them on the day!

1LH have been looking at Fairy tales with a twist. In ‘Keep running Gingerbread Man’
there is a naughty fellow who is fitter and smarter than most. We have been busy
writing descriptions and creating our own Gingerbread boy or girl.
The Gingerbread Man is a dreadful little smug fellow. The Gingerbread Man was an
annoying little man. He was a fast Gingerbread Man who was so fast when he jumped
out of the oven. The fast clever little teatime snack ran away. -Liam

worked out. - Lenny

Stage Two News Aaaarrrrgghhhh!!!!
What a crazy, fun time we are having in 4H as we are winding down towards the end of the term! Firstly, I would like to
welcome our new student teacher Mr Landrigan. He will be working with 4H until the end of the term, and the kids are
really enjoying having him here already. Welcome!
In 4H we are busy looking at speech writing and speech composition. Remember, we have our class speeches in week 9.
They are to be written AT HOME, and presented to the class in week 9. 4H will be preparing a timetable to for speech
presentation this week, and that timetable will be sent home and uploaded to ClassDojo for families to see.
Great Aussie Bush Camp—We have held some camp meetings recently to help settle any nerves and answer any questions
the students may have. Parents and carers will be receiving notes with camp information in the coming weeks.
May the force be with you,
Mr Hull
Stage Three News
Congratulations to all of our wonderful WBPS students who are busy preparing for the 25th Anniversary performance of
Star Struck: Shine On, which is to take place at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre this week. Our terrific kids and dedi-
cated staff will be there on Wednesday all the way through to very late on Saturday evening. It is an exciting thing to take
part in this fabulous show and an experience that creates many extended friendships and wonderful memories that linger
long after the floor is pulled up and the disco ball comes down. This will be my 25th year working as a member of the pro-
duction team on the show. Over the years, I have been fortunate to work with some amazing crew and see many children
shine in the spotlight for maybe just that show run or alternatively kick start a career in the performing arts, as a direct
result of their Star Struck experience. If you have never viewed the show, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Good luck
kids and teachers. I know that Warners Bay students ‘shine’ every year at the show!
Public Speaking speeches need to finalised as part of student homework during this week. Next week, Stage 3 students will
be presenting their speech to their class and the inter class finalists will have their opportunity to possibly grab a place in
the zone completion during Week 10. Good luck everyone. Be confident, use an expressive voice, look at your audience
and remember to have your speech written on palm cards. Everyone who bravely stands and presents is a winner!

Stage 3 Assistant Principal
What’s happening in 6P? 6P would like to welcome aboard Mr Joseph Aked to our class for the next 4 weeks. Mr Aked is a 2nd Year trainee teacher
at Newcastle University. He has settled in well and 6P are making him feel very welcome. Mr Aked has a love of Visual
Arts and so, we are looking forward to learning lots of great things from him over the coming weeks. He is also teaching
our exciting Geography unit based on ‘Factors That Change Places’.
During this and next term, 6P will be reading an amazing class novel by the fabulous Aus-
tralian author Michael Gerard Bauer. The novel is called ‘Don’t Call Me Ishmael’ and is a
particular favourite of mine and every class whom I have read it to over the past 5 or 6
years. The novel introduces students to engaging characters and their brave, inventive and
foolhardy ways of counteracting the school bully (Big Bad Barry Bagsley).
It looks at how friendships can blossom in the most amazing places and under the most
extreme conditions of stress. It is laugh out loud hysterical and has just enough cheeky in-
ferences to have the kids rolling their eyes and bursting into hysterics. Along the way, it
also introduces students to classic literature such as Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and pre-
sents a fun way of looking at the study of Shakespeare.

Last week, 6P read Chapter 11: Inside the Mincing Machine. In this chapter Ishmael, who is constantly bullied by Barry
Bagsley, goes to the aid of a small child who is being bullied by Barry and his band of thugs. During the incident, Ish-
mael proves that although not always effective, we should stand up and speak out when we see something bad happen-
ing.
Sadly, Ishmael is of little assistance but as a result of the encounter, he develops a friendship with the little boy. Ishmael
stops the little boy’s tears when he tells of how he is really a secret super hero in disguise and had he wanted to, he
could have used his super powers to defeat the thugs. The dialogue between the 2 characters is funny and very heart
warming.
As part of the follow up lesson to this chapter, Mr Aked had the students write an alternative ending to the story. In it,
they allowed Ishmael to actually have super hero powers and save the day. Below are a couple of fine examples of the
super hero ending written by 6P students. I encourage parents to speak to their child at tea time and get them to tell
you what super powers they gave to Ishmael and where they took their story line.
Maxwell Holland
“Well Fish-whale, if you want him to have his hat back why don’t you come and take it!” said Barry. He would soon
regret that challenge because I have unknown super powers deep within my soul.
As I feel the anger begin to rage up in me, I start to look slightly green. I watch myself as I bulk up. For once in my life,
I have biceps. I am The Hulk!
Barry’s mouth drops open and is synchronised with his two bullying buddies. I walk over to Barry and he drops the
hat. I snatch it off the ground before he can pick it up again.
Barry yells to his friends, “Come on guys, let’s get out of here!” Barry runs away, like a lizard trying to escape its pred-
ator.
I slowly shrink back to my normal wimpy self and return the hat to the boy. The boy belches, “That was so awesome!
How did you do that?”
“I don’t know,” I answer. “I guess it will always be a mystery. All I know is that I have beaten Barry…like a human
squishing a fly,” I reply with new confidence in myself.
Charlotte Lawrence
“Well Fish-whale, if you want him to have his hat back why don’t you come and take it!” said Barry. He would soon
regret that challenge.
I gulped, trying to keep my anger under control but it was too late… I could already feel the cold passing through me
as though liquid nitrogen had been injected into my bloodstream.
I looked back at Barry, keeping my eyes locked on this smirking bully. As my feelings strengthened and I became more
confident, the smirk immediately left Barry’s face.
“What the….?” his cronies said, as they slowly backed away from me, weary looks written all over their faces. Barry’s
faltering smirk was still there but now his arms and legs were quivering violently. “He sure does have some strong will
power,” I snickered to myself inwardly. “Especially for someone as daft as him!”
Barry suddenly freezes as through stuck in time. “Give me that hat!” I command, as I walk towards Barry, who now
has the hat clutched in his outstretched hand.
I snatch the hat before passing it to the little boy, who walks away without another word. When the boy is far away
and happily clutching his hat, I simply click my fingers and disappear.
A light smiles tugs at the corners of my lips as I hear the angry yell of a bully far off in the distance. I hear the bully say,
“Oi, where’d he go? I smile to myself as I think, “These super powers can be very helpful sometimes.”
