  • Welcome to our 2021 Open House and Limited Auction. Every year brings its own unique challenges and2020 is one that I doubt any of us will forget soon. As a sign of the times, we feel compelled to mentionCovid-19. Our Limited Auction is primarily an open air event. Masks are welcomed but certainly not required. If you have any concerns about attending this event give us a call ahead of time. Early visitors are welcomeand sight unseen purchases are fully guaranteed. We’re all in this together and better days are just aroundthe corner. As the pandemic subsides (and it will subside) we believe the stage is set for a rise in beef de-mand. The genetics added today will be well positioned to take advantage of the rising beef market to come.

In our home herd we continue to focus our efforts on identifying and multiplying superior adaptable ma-ternal Simmental genetics that can be successful in low to medium input herds. In our view that meansmoderate mature size, moderate milk, exceptional fleshing ability and fertility on low to medium inputs. Bystacking generations of tough range tested cows, we have built a core of DX pedigrees that are doing thethings that we ask of them. We do continue to invest in genetics from outside sources as well. This allowsus to continue to produce some bulls that represent fresh bloodlines for returning customers.

The second area where we choose to focus is on top end growth and carcass trait black SimAngus bulls. This is where our cooperators come in. Mike and Sohn Domsch and Tim Rippe have brought us an out-standing set of high growth bulls again this year. Nearly all are homozygous black and homozygous polledand represent an opportunity to add a lot of pounds to any calf crop. For those of you that have followedour program through the years we think that you will be agree that this could be the best set of bulls todate. The bulls have done exceptionally well and are ready to make positive change in any herd.

We look forward to sharing this bull offering with you on Feb. 20th. If you can’t be with us that day giveus a call and come take a look ahead of time. As always, we offer free board until April 1st and fully guaranteethe bulls. If you have any questions, give us a call for more information on these bulls or our program andwe hope to see you on or before the 20th.

Non-Dilute Red Homozygous Polled. Governor is a rock solid, deep dark red bull with exceptional flesh-ing ability. He should be real maternal trait breeding piece. We used him to clean up cows in our Augustbreeding program.

Our Low Input 2 Year Old Program Our May and June born bulls were born at that time by design. We handle this set of cows completely

separate from the early spring calving cows as a true low input herd. After years of selection pressure onstrictly winter grass, we have found the type and bloodlines that work in this program and have now movedto more stalks in the winter freeing up more grass for summer. We don’t push these bulls to maximizegrowth. They were grown slow last winter and then kicked out on grass all summer. They didn’t come intothe lot until November. We had a scale problem at weaning time for these bulls that we did not realize untilit was too late. To compensate for that lack of actual data, we have run DNA enhanced EPDs on this group.

  • KID TESTED

  • Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs representsthe unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unitdifference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units theyare expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to wean-ing weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds moreweaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would beexpected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calfheifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-rankingchart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him rel-ative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or moredetailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmen-tal.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under anall-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used onheifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births infirst-calving daughters.

Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

    Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weightdue to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.

Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.

Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in thecowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a termi-nal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic lev-els for many economically important traits, they only provide apiece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in.Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overallimpact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to thedramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over thelast several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entirecow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows)with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd sizeretained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and soldgrade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Anguscows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’rekeeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs,zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can beused to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another.Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull comparedto another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, youcan quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra$6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart isrequired to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relativeto other bulls in the breed.
