DMCS-TEACHERS ORIENTATION PROGRAMME 2018-19DMCS has always been known for organising rewarding Teaching Workshops, with appropriate embellishments. The able aegis of Dr. Joseph V. G. - Chairman, Garden City Group of Institutions and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Maldives in Bangalore; has always fostered an ‘out of the box thinking’ in guiding these illuminating workshops. The training programme was held at the prestigious Garden City University Campus for DMCS - Banaswadi, DMCS- Vidyaranyapura and GCPUC Teaching Faculty, on 25th and 26th May, 2018.

The orientation programme commenced with a warm welcome speech by the DMCS and GCPUC Director- Administration, Ms. Vrinda Coutinho. It was followed by a brief discourse on DMCS inception and history by DMES Secretary- Mr. Nainan P. Oommen. An engaging video presentation on the overview of events at DMCS Banswadi, Vidyaranyapura and GCPUC Campus was presented to the audience. The new entrants to the institution participated in a spontaneous ice-breaking session.

The programme commenced with a powerful session by Dr. Parameshwar P. Iyer - Principal Research Scientist, Department of Management Studies at Indian Institute of Science. With high tenets of ‘learning coupled with practice based teaching’; the speaker showed a different perspective to contemporary education. Ms. Aparna Athreya - Founder, Kid & Parent Foundation, shed light on the importance of ethics and values for teachers. The session concluded with a thought provoking video presentation that reaffirmed the theme, ‘Power of hope can change the world’. Ms. Sandhya S. Kumar - Doordarshan Artist, spoke passionately on the

topic ‘Motivation and Confidence Building’. She emphasized on an amalgamation of readiness, attainment of desired skill sets and industriousness for building confidence.

Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana held an appealing session on the ‘Role of Science in Education’. The speaker categorically urged the teachers not to kill the curiosity amongst the students and foster the scientific temper in their persona.

This was followed by a very inspiring and interesting session by Ms. Smitha Ramesh - Freelance Trainer on the topic ‘Significance of Emotional Intelligence’. It beautifully relived the fact that, education is commensurate only when there is scope for building emotional intelligence in students.

The second session of the day on ‘Protection of Women and Child’ was presented by Mr. C. A. Simon, Dy SP-CID. He deliberated upon the main features of POCSO Act and urged the teachers to educate the children on safety measures and prevention of child abuse.

open yourself up to the life changing experiences, the more likely they are to happen. You have great opportunities while at school and larger platforms to groom yourselves. Respect the time, cherish it, and see yourself transformed by the people you meet and the lessons you learn.

Your teachers cannot educate you alone, which brings me to my second point. Teaching is a cooperative effort and not an individual one. Students do the real work of learning, and teachers show them the path. True learning takes place only through the activity of the learner’s own mind. Only you know when your mind is truly engaged in a book or on a lesson. The students and teachers at DMCS believe that teaching and learning offers us all unlimited opportunities to focus on a number of “little things” that culminate over time to produce students that are prepared to do the “great things” of life.

The way your mind is shaped during your time in school is what truly matters. You may remember that “I was often corrected by my teacher in class”, “I was asked to speak the truth“, ”I was given opportunities to lead“, ”I was guided to follow the path of honesty”, this is what that will remain with you all your life. This explains my third point on Character.

I want to welcome you back once again to DMCS. We have put a path before you that will transform you, inspire you, and that will shape you into the kind of person you would want to become.

Let’s together have a great year 2018-19 !

speak of excellence today. At DMCS, we emphasize on excellence as well, but we do so in a way that I believe is richer and deeper than the rest, since we focus on life. We are interested in shaping students not just towards intellectual excellence or spiritual excellence, but in all of the ways that matter to us as human beings.

There are three important parameters worth considering as you begin your academic session for the year 2018-19. First, you should prepare yourself to be transformed. Second, I want you to realize that teaching is a joint effort and not an individual one. Third, I want you to understand that character is the most important and enduring gift that you will take with you when you graduate from DMCS.

Regarding the first point–you being transformed while at DMCS-teachers change students’ lives every day on our campus. Whether it takes place in the morning assembly or on the playground or in the classroom, students are transformed by what they experience and learn in school. The more you

A TIME FOR ANOTHER NEW BEGINNING

HARBINGER OF GOOD THOUGHTS

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE-DMCS BANASWADI

Every day is a new beginning,Treat it that way,Stay away from what might have been,And look at what can be.

-Marsha Petrie Sue

The British Council conferred on our school the prestigious ISA Award for the second time in a row; this was the result of the hard work our students and teachers relentlessly put in. Our Kinderfun unit is going through a makeover and with a refreshingly new look will entice our tiny tots of Kindergarten.Every child has a leader within. Our ways of imparting education are designed to bring out and hone the leadership skills in our students. In this endeavor, we are pleased to inform you that from this year on, the student council will be formed twice a year – giving the opportunity of captaincy to many more students. Yes, double!I can assure you that the year ahead is going to be a wonderful ride, almost synonymous with a trip to an amusement park with a host of rides awaiting you! Watch out for some bumpy ones, some quiet, some smooth and some roller coasters too. Nevertheless, it is going to be another whole world of exciting opportunities – to learn, explore, enjoy, and to start afresh.Let us plunge into this year, with a resolve to work hard, smart and give every opportunity that comes our way, the best we can. Once again, welcome back dear children, to another new beginning!

The air seems fresh and full of possibility. All of us are gradually getting geared up, looking forward to the year before us. Learning, growth and development were the hallmarks of the year gone by which has given us the motivation to embrace this year with optimistic thoughts. Our students performed well and we secured 100% results in the CBSE Board Examination - 2018.This school year will be a year of setting and reaching attainable goals, working harder and smarter and taking our school and student achievement to the next level of “Greatness”. At DMCS, we are dedicated to a student-centered program that promotes academic excellence through an enriched, rigorous & inter-disciplinary curriculum. It can take a few weeks for a child to acclimate to a new grade, peer group

and teacher. We are here to support all our students, by any means necessary, to ensure they reach their fullest academic potential.Dear children, we are confident that all of you have the capacity and ability to meet our expectations and the demands of your new classes and teachers. Our goal is to ensure that all students become critical thinkers, active problem-solvers, inquisitive readers, diligent researchers and prolific writers. Together, I am sure we will make this school year, one of excellence and achievement. May the years at DMCS be the brightest years in the life of our students.

Mrs. Geetha Somanathan

Can you imagine the excitement of a child on receiving a gift, packaged in beautiful colour papers – impatient to unpack and wondering what there could be within? Are we not almost that child – with the brand-new gift of “This Year”? I am excited to welcome you all back to school, children! I hope you all had a refreshing vacation. I am sure you must be eagerly waiting to be back to your school and friends, all set to embrace the bounties that this academic year has, to bestow upon you.As we welcome this academic year with open arms, new hopes and aspirations, I am proud to share with you the highlights of our achievements of the year gone by, that we successfully pulled off together. Our Class X students graduated with flying colours – carrying forward our legacy of 100% results this year too, in the board examinations. Another feather in our cap-

Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success

HYDERABAD

I visited Hyderbad in my last summer vacation. Though it was very hot and humid, the Capital city of newly formed State of Telengana, is very beautiful. Hyderabad and Secunderabad are considered as twin cities. Hyderabad is an extremely well connected place with criss-crossing railways and roadways from East to West to North to South. Asia’s biggest film studio - Ramoji Film City and the largest flyover built in the name of late Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao are the highlights of this enticing city.Hyderabad is world famous for its pearl and stone ornaments. It is also famous for its world renowned cuisines-Dum Biryani and Haleem. Few of the other tourist attractions in Hyderabad are Salar Jung Museum, Birla Mandir and the popular Hi Tech City of IT Sector. The plunging crime rate and enjoyable weather in the `City of Pearls’ has made it grab the top rank among Indian cities, in the latest Mercer Quality of Living Rating 2018.

THE AUTHOR’S ODYSSEY

THE QUEERThe farmers of Switzerland set up tiny shops in the middle of Swiss Alps and stock them with fresh dairy products like cheese, butter, milk, honey and bread. How is it strange then? It is unbelievable because there is no shopkeeper to count your money! Farmers are hardworking people who tend to their chores leaving the shops unattended as they have no time. They believe in the ideology of HONEST SOCIETY and trust that people would leave their money in the basket, worth the value of the purchase. This amazing practice of trusting people around fosters unprecedented loyalty and honesty among the community.

A. J. Cronin is Scottish novelist and physician. His writings are a classic combination of realism coupled with social awareness- this has garnered huge readership both in Britain and America. He chose the career of writing, over the practice of medicine. His best known novels are “The Citadel”, “The Key of the Kingdom” and “The Spanish Gardener”. Many of his novels have been made into successful movies.A. J. Cronin has used the title of William Shakespeare’s famous play - “Two Gentlemen of Verona”- this is the story which shook me to the core. This is a fictional story written by A. J. Cronin, which recounts the hard life chosen by two young boys- Jacopo and Nicola. They were trying to earn and pay for the treatment of their sister’s malady by sacrificing their own food and comfort. The maturity they display in facing the adversity of life rekindles the trust in humanity. I have always been attached to human relationships and the intricacies involved with human psyche and behaviour. This book beautifully exhibits sibling love and upholds the emotions of nobility, devotion and selflessness.

BRAVEHEART HALL OF FAMEThe National Bravery Awards – Karanbeer SinghIt was the month of January 2018, and it was a proud moment for Karanbeer Singh, now 17 years old, as he was standing right there with the Prime Minister of India - Mr. Narendra Modi, and smiling to the camera, with a medal around his neck - receiving the prestigious National Bravery Award on Republic Day 2018. Just last year, he had saved the lives of over 20 students from drowning, when their school bus plunged into a drain. A student of DAV public school in Attari, Punjab, he managed to rescue multiple lives of many students who were going to drown in the drain. Their bus fell off a narrow bridge, due to the broken railing on it. However, he was that one student who was able to shirk off all fear and managed to stay calm and composed during this dangerous situation. However, after being selected for the prestigious award, Karanbeer made three demands from the Prime Minister. His first demand was to repair the bridge where his friends met with death. He says that this measure would ensure that all the vehicles that pass on this bridge shall not fall. His second demand was to make sure that a good hospital was constructed in that area, as some children died on that day due to a lack of good medical

facilities in Attari. His third demand was to end the notorious drug problem being faced by multiple provinces in Punjab.DMCS Students applaud him, and all those who have displayed such bravery, and learn from them, for they have done acts, which the whole nation is proud of.
