LATVIA IS RANKED AS THE SECOND GREENEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD? Latvia has an amazing landscape marked by lowland plains, rolling hills, forests, covering 44 % of the territory and thousands of rivers and lakes. Bike tour, nature hunt or skiing trip - you can explore nature’s wonders in Latvia any season, any time!

THE 1st CHRISTMAS TREE IN THE WORLD WAS DECORATED IN RIGA?The first documented use of a spruce-tree in a Christmas celebration took place in Riga, Latvia, in 1510. Christmas markets, an excellent source of handicrafts and customized presents, are still an important part of the holiday spirit in the Baltics. Throughout December and January, they ensure a magical atmosphere in the very heart of the Old Town.

AMERICAN JEANS WERE INVENTED BY A LATVIAN?In California in the 1850s, Levi Strauss was selling blue denim work pants to local workers. One of his regular wholesale customers was tailor Jacob Davis, who was born in Riga. He came up with the idea to use copper rivets for reinforcing the pockets and seams of the pants. Based on his U.S. Patent 139,121 many consider it the official “birth” of the blue jeans. Today, talented designers in Latvia’s fashion industry are winning world competitions with stunning designs, combining Latvian tradition with modern fashion.

FOUNDINGFounded in 1201. Riga is one of the oldest European capital cities.

THE LEGEND OF RIGAOnce upon a time, a man, wearing a black coat came out of the river Daugava. He struck the ground three times with his walking stick and asked if Riga was ready. But it wasn’t, so the man went back into the river. He is believed to appear every hundred years. The day Riga will be ready, the man in the black coat will drown it.The wise people of Riga know that the city will never be completed. It will always be growing and developing.

RIGA TODAYHundreds of years ago Riga was known as the ‘Paris of the North’. Now, a little more than 800 year old Riga is called ‘The Second City that Never Sleeps’ and the ‘Hottest City in the North’. Riga is blossoming as a creative center for the arts and culture, revealing its status as the Metropolis of the Baltics, and presenting a unique cultural heritage, created by the impact of multiple cultures, rulers and local legacies.

FOUNDINGFounded in 1323 by Grand Duke Gediminas (granted city rights in 1387)

THE LEGEND OF VILNIUSGrand Duke Gedeminas established the city of Vilnius after an unusual dream during a hunting trip in the forests of Šventaragis Valley. He spent a night near the mouth of the Vilnia River and dreamt that an iron wolf was standing on the top of a hill and howling toward the moon as loud as a hundred wolves. The next day, his priest explained the dream to the Grand Duke. The priest interpreted the dream to mean the Grand Duke should establish a city among these hills. The fame of the city would be as glorious as the sound of the wolf ’s howling in the dream. The Grand Duke established the future capital and borrowed the name of it from the rapid Vilnia River.

VILNIUS TODAYWhen Napoleon passed through the city in 1812, he described Vilnius as “the Jerusalem of the North” because of the influence of its Jewish inhabitants that continued until the 20th century. Today, one of the largest historical city centers in Europe, Vilnius represents a blend of various architectural styles. The heritage of previous centuries are preserved next to the emerging new styles of art and architecture in the new developing business and commercial area: the New City Centre.

SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME TO EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF LITHUANIAN CUISINE? The best time to try the Lithuanian Tree Cake, also known as ‘raguolis’ (which means “spiked”) or ‘sakotis’ (“branched”), is during the Kaziukas Fair, known as Kaziuko Mugė. Visit Vilnius or Kaunas in late February or early March (the last Sunday before St. Casimir’s Day) and taste a vast variety of traditional foodstuffs like apple cheese, honey cookies or kvass, a fermented beverage made from rye bread. The Kaziukas Fair is a large annual folk arts and crafts fair dating to the beginning of the 17th century.

A SAUSAGE CAN ACTUALLY BE STUFFED WITH POTATOES INSTEAD OF MEAT? The passion for potato dishes in Lithuania has transformed the notion of weird into classical in terms of cuisine. To try ‘vėdarai’, a potato sausage, is an unforgettable experience due to its taste and look - sample it with sour cream or caramelized onions.

LITHUANIAN’S NATIONAL DISH IS NAMED AFTER A TYPE OF AIRCRAFT? The most traditional Lithuanian dish, Cepelinai dumplings, are of course made of potatoes. It is a dumpling shaped like a zeppelin, the iconic airship of the early 20th century invented by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. These dumplings are made of riced potatoes and usually filled with minced meat. Cepelinai is on menu of almost every restaurant in Lithuania - even vegetarian versions of this dish exists...

FOUNDINGLindanise, a merchants’ settlement of Tallinn goes back to the beginning of the 10th century. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Danes established the fortified city of Reval, Tallinn’s name until 1918.

THE LEGEND OF TALLINNOne of the most famous legends refers to Old Thomas, the town’s favorite guard. The legend talks about an annual archery contest held each spring. Contestants, exclusively from noble families, competed in shooting a wooden parrot off the top of a high pole. One year, no one could hit the target except Thomas, a plucky boy from a poor family. Instead of getting in trouble, he was made an apprentice guard. During the Livonian War, he performed many heroic deeds. Years later, locals started to call the Town Hall’s weather vane Old Thomas and told children that Thomas was watching them and would reward good behavior.

TALLINN TODAYTallinn has come a long way from a medieval Hanseatic League member to the digital and technological leader of the region nowadays. It has been called a “Silicon Valley on the Baltic Sea” and listed as one of the top 10 digital cities in the world. Free Wi-Fi access throughout the city demonstrates its leadership in the information technologies to all visitors. Tallinn offers an old-world feel with a fresh breath of modern architecture, where art and culture, medieval and contemporary, are visible with every step.

On display are the 1936 Lembit, the only surviving mine-laying submarine in the world and Suur Tõll, the largest steam-powered icebreaker in Europe, and much more…

BLACK PUDDING IS NOT THE ONLY FOOD THAT CAN BE PREPARED FROM BLOOD? One of the most traditional Estonian dishes is ‘Verikäkk’ or blood pancakes. They are often served on Christmas with blood sausage and sauerkraut. ‘Verikäkk’ are somewhat similar to black pudding, a dish known in Scandinavian culture. However, the Estonian version is thinner and crispier.

JUNIPER BERRIES HELP CURE 99 DISEASES AND OVERCOME THE DEVIL? Juniper berries can be found in many Estonian pies, beers and in the traditional drink Kali, also known as Estonian cola. Every berry has a cross on the top of it and for this reason, Estonians have a strong belief that juniper berries are effective against witchcraft.

TALLINN IS CALLED A CITY FOR SWEET TOOTHS?It is still being debated whether marzipan was first industrially produced in Tallinn or Lübeck. Although both Estonian confectioner Kalev and Lübeck’s Niederegger were founded in 1806, medieval records show marzipan being sold in pharmacies in both cities well before the 19th century. The tradition of having marzipan as a dessert is still popular among Estonians. In addition to wide selection of marzipan desserts, many cafes offer marzipan culinary classes!
